Implementation of endoscopes in cholesteatoma surgery resulted in considerable changes in the management of cholesteatoma in the last two decades. Compared to the microscopic approach with an excellent but straight-line view and limited illumination, the introduction of endoscopes provides a wide-angled panoramic view. Moreover, angled lenses allow the surgeon to visualize the middle ear and its hidden recesses through a transcanal, minimally-invasive approach. The endoscope enables the surgeon to remove limited cholesteatoma of the middle ear and its recesses using an exclusive endoscopic tec

INTRODUCTION: Labyrinthine fistula is one of the most frequent complications of cholesteatoma (CHO), occurring in about 8% of cases in the literature. In about 90% of cases, it is located at the level of the lateral semicircular canal, and its clinical manifestation includes vertigo, nystagmus and positive Hennebert and Tullio signs. The management of lateral semicircular canal fistula (LSCF) secondary to CHO classically requires a retroauricular access by performing a canal wall-up (CWU) or canal wall-down (CWD) mastoidectomy. However, in case of a CHO confined to the tympanic cavity causing

INTRODUCTION: Intralabyrinthine schwannoma (ILS) is a tumor originating from the Schwann cells in the inner ear. Various surgical approaches can be used for the resection of ILS. The aim of this report is to describe a case involving a 60-year-old man who was treated successfully with a combined surgical approach.
CASE REPORT: The patient underwent a combined microscopic (transmastoid labyrinthectomy) and endoscopic procedure for surgical excision of ILS involving the vestibule and the lower half of the cochlear basal turn. The combined surgical technique enabled a complete removal of the ILS

Acoustic neuromas, also known as vestibular schwannomas, are slow-growing, benign tumors that develop on the eighth cranial nerve. Common signs and symptoms of an acoustic neuroma include hearing loss and balance disturbances. A physical examination, a hearing evaluation, and diagnostic imaging assist in the diagnosis of an acoustic neuroma. Patients with a confirmed tumor have three treatment options: observation, stereotactic radiosurgery, and surgical removal. Complications include cerebrospinal fluid leakage, damage to ancillary brain structures, facial nerve damage, and bleeding or vascul

Objectives (1) Measure temperature variations achieved by common otomicroscopes. (2) Raise awareness about possible thermal injury during otologic procedures with the advent of newer, high-powered otomicroscopes. (3) Describe optical technology that aims to reduce the potential for thermal injury. Methods A variety of otomicroscopes, with different light sources (ranging from 100W halogen to 300W xenon), were studied. Temperatures were recorded from human auricular skin with a noncontact infrared thermometer at various microscope light intensities and with use of irrigation. Multiple recording

OBJECTIVE: To describe a modified meatoplasty for external auditory canal stenosis with endoaural-conchal incision.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study.
SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital.
PATIENTS: There were 140 patients (145 ears) who had undergone surgical correction for external auditory canal stenosis from 2003 to 2010.
INTERVENTION: The modified meatoplasty with endoaural-conchal incision was used to correct the external auditory canal stenosis.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The postoperative complications and the incidence of restenosis.
RESULTS: Almost all the patients obtained

Epistaxis associated with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a challenging condition. Septodermoplasty, electrocautery and laser treatment often provide short-term relief only. The surgical closure of the nostrils ('Young's procedure') represents a longer term solution but has the disadvantage of causing permanent complete nasal obstruction. A Silastic obturator has the advantage of being a non-surgical intervention and allows temporary relief of the nasal obstruction. We present the cases of three patientswith HHT who used the obturator with good clinical effect, suggesting that

OBJECTIVE: To develop an ideal supportive packing material for ossiculoplasty, tympanoplasty, or other otologic procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several materials, namely, Carbylan-SX (P-C; Sentrx Surgical, Inc., Salt Lake City, UT), Gelfoam (P-GF; Pharmacia & Upjohn, Kalamazoo, MI), and Merogel (P-MG; Medtronics, Inc., Minneapolis, MN), were prepared and then placed into a Hartley guinea pig's (Elm Hill, Chelmsford, MA) middle ear cavities through a large myringotomy incision. The contralateral ear underwent a large myringotomy without packing material being placed. Preoperative and poster

In order to discern trends in surgical procedures used to treat Ménière's disease in the United States during the 1990s, we mailed a questionnaire to 700 members of the American Otological Society and the American Neurotology Society. These physicians were asked about the frequency, results, and complications of surgical procedures for Ménière's disease that they had performed between Jan. 1, 1990, and Dec. 31, 1999. Questionnaires were returned by 137 surgeons (19.6%). Their responses indicated that the number of vestibular neurectomies, labyrinthectomies, and endolymphatic sac surgeries all

Objective:To observe the clinical effect on the treatment of intractable tympanitis with reconstruction of external auditory canal wall.Method:Five cases underwent radical removel of residual lesion and reconsruction of external auditory posterior canal wall using hydroxyapatite ceramic wall with transferred pedicle temporalis fascia covering on it were analyzed. The implement of ossicular chain reconstruction depends on the probing for tympanic cavity intraoperatively. Periodic review were conducted in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 12th month after surgery.Result:All 5 cases gained dryears within 3 mont

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency of the descending hypoglossal branch-facial nerve anastomosis for the severe facial palsy after acoustic neuroma resection.
METHODS: The clinical data of 14 patients (6 males, 8 females, average age 45. 6 years old) underwent descending hypoglossal branch-facial nerve anastomosis for treatment of unilateral facial palsy was analyzed retrospectively. All patients previously had undergone resection of a large acoustic neuroma. House-Brackmann (H-B) grading system was used to evaluate the pre-, post-operative and follow up facial nerve function status. 12 ca

The closed-anterior-scoring technique has been used over the past 3 years to correct 56 prominent ears in 32 patients at the West Midlands Regional Plastic Surgery Unit at Wordsley Hospital. A review was carried out to assess the result of this surgical procedure. We briefly discuss the historical development of other surgical techniques for prominent-ear correction, and describe in detail the operative technique for this procedure, which includes closed scoring and suturing of the cartilage. We used this technique to treat 24 patients with bilateral prominent ears and eight patients with unil
