During a survey of actinobacteria known to suppress the growth of Streptomyces scabies (the causative agent of potato scab disease) in vivo, six new rhamnosylated alkaloids, the solphenazines A-F (1-6), were isolated from a biological control strain of Streptomyces (DL-93). A standard patch test series was tested for 7 years (1977-1983) in a total of 11,962 patients. The annual frequency of positive reactions to the compounds tested was assessed for the total and for males and females separately. The common preventive therapy in our department for newborns' eyes is tetracycline ophthalmic ointment. Due to temporary shortage of tetracycline ophthalmic ointment for one week in December 1991, the preventive therapy given to seventy-one newborns was gentamicin sulfate ophthalmic ointment. Butylparaben is a widely used preservative, yet its toxicity and mechanisms of action in aquatic organisms remain unclear. In this study, zebrafish were used as a model and exposed to butylparaben at concentrations of 0, 1, 1.5, and 2 mg/L from 10 to 72 hpf. In an open study, 38 patients suffering from psoriasis of the scalp with various degrees of severity and duration, were treated for 4 weeks with a lotion containing 0.05% betamethasone 17, 21-dipropionate and 2% salicylic acid in a paraben-free vehicle containing isopropyl alcohol. The results showed agreement between the overall evaluation of response by patients and the physician using a 60 mm visual scale analogue. Marked relief of symptoms appeared after 1 week of treatment while clinical improvement appeared after 2 weeks. Slight degree of induration was present in 1 patient after 4 weeks

Patch tests and photopatch tests with various cosmetics, coal tar dyes, perfumes, lanolin preparations and parabens-mix were performed in 53 patients with pigmented cosmetic dermatitis similar in clinical appearance to Riehl's melanosis.
