Characterization of cyclophosphamide-rat model of cryptosporidiosis.

A cyclophosphamide-treated-rat model for cryptosporidiosis is described. The optimal conditions for inducing a cryptosporidial infection in rats were a 50 mg/kg dose of cyclophosphamide per day in the drinking water for a minimum of 14 days before inoculation with 10(4) or more infectious oocysts. Eighteen days after inoculation, 80% or more of the animals were infected. Cryptosporidia were attached to the terminal 24 cm of the small intestine, and the immunosuppressed animals remained infected as long as they received cyclophosphamide. However, the intestinal infection cleared within 7 to 10

Arrested development in Ancylostoma duodenale: course of a self-induced infection in man.

The course of self-induced infection with about 100 Ancylostoma duodenale larvae was followed by twice-weekly blood and stool examinations. After a small initial increase, no further change in eosinophil counts occurred until the 33rd week of infection when they began to increase sharply. Seven weeks later, eggs were first observed in stools. Thus, in this infection, the prepatent period was five times the expected. It is suggested that a strain of A.duodenale exists which either 1) has an inherent, abnormally long prepatent period or 2) has a prepatent period which is susceptible to change de

Risk of hepatitis "E" virus infection among some schistosomiasis patients in Egypt.

This study was carried out to demonstrate hepatitis "E" virus antibodies (IgG) among individuals living in different rural areas. The study included 200 individuals. One hundred were suffering from S. mansoni as confirmed by stool egg count, rectal snip, abdominal ultrasound and liver biopsy. The second hundred (Group II) were parasite-free individuals serving as normal control. The main symptoms of group I were dyspepsia, fatigue, dysentery, bleeding per rectum and hepatomegaly. There was no significant difference in the transaminase levels (SGPT and SGOT) between both groups. The prevalence

Performance of three techniques for diagnosing equine tapeworm infection.

Tapeworm infection in horses can cause serious health concerns, and recent data have documented treatment failures in the most common species, Anoplocephala perfoliata. The threat of anthelmintic resistance in A. perfoliata is of particular concern because of poor diagnostic performance of standard egg counting techniques for detecting this parasite. This study compared the performance of three diagnostic techniques 1) Mini-FLOTAC, 2) Cornell-Wisconsin, and 3) Proudman and Edwards used to detect and quantify A. perfoliata eggs in naturally infected horses. Eighteen adult female horses from the

Modelling anthelmintic resistance by extending eggCounts package to allow individual efficacy.

The same anthelmintic treatment can have variable efficacy on individual animals even if the parasite population is homogenously susceptible. An extension of the R package eggCounts is proposed to take individual efficacy into account using a Bayesian hierarchical model. A simulation study is conducted to compare the performance of five different methods on estimating faecal egg count reduction and its uncertainty interval. Simulation results showed the individual efficacy model offered robust inference to two different data simulation procedures with low root mean squared error on the reducti

Prevalence and risk factors for intestinal parasite infection in goats raised in Nakhon Pathom Province, Thailand.

The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and risk factors for intestinal parasite infection in goats raised in Nakhon Pathom Province. Fecal samples from 190 goats in 12 herds were collected per rectum. Questionnaires focusing on the general information about the farm and farmers, and management practices on farms were completed. Modified McMaster counting technique was performed to detect eggs of intestinal parasites. Each egg found was classified into three groups of parasites based on its characteristics. Individual and herd prevalence were calculated. Multiple logistic

Ivermectin performance against equine strongylids: Efficacy, egg reappearance periods, and fecal egg counting method comparison.

Equine strongylids are ubiquitous and can cause severe health issues. Anthelmintic resistance is widely common in cyathostomin parasites, and recent studies have documented increasing incidence of resistance to the macrocyclic lactone drug class. Several European countries have implemented prescription-only restrictions of anthelmintic usage by law to reduce anthelmintic treatment intensity and decrease the selection pressure for drug resistance. However, long term outcomes of this approach have not been thoroughly evaluated. The aim was to determine ivermectin efficacy in strongylids by means

Assessment of anthelmintic potentials of Myrtus communis against Haemonchus contortus and Heligmosomoides polygyrus.

Anthelmintic resistance in grazing livestock systems has been spreading worldwide in prevalence and severity. Therefore, alternative measures including the use of herbal anthelmintic is considered as one of the successful approaches for the control of anthelmintic resistance. In the present report, we describe the chemical constituents of Myrtus communis essential oil, its in vitro anthelmintic effect against the most pathogenic gastrointestinal parasite of sheep; Haemonchus contortus and its in vivo anthelmintic potential using an in vivo gastrointestinal parasite model of rodents; i.e. Helig

Investigating Immunization With Nucleotide Enzymes of Schistosoma mansoni: Nucleoside Diphosphate Kinase and Adenylosuccinate Lyase as New Antigenic Targets Against Schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma mansoni trematode worm, affects more than 1.5 million people in Brazil. The current treatment consists in the administration of Praziquantel, the only medicine used for treatment for more than 40 years. Some of the limitations of this drug consist in its inactivity against schistosomula and parasite eggs, the appearance of resistant strains and non-prevention against reinfection. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of immunization with recombinant functional enzymes of the purine salvage pathway of S. mansoni, Nucleoside Diphospha

Secondary cutaneous manifestations of acute schistosomiasis mansoni.

The secondary cutaneous manifestations of the initial phase of schistosomiasis mansoni were studied in 34 patients who had been infected simultaneously in the same location. Sixteen of the patients developed angioedema and/or urticaria, generally of short duration and of mild intensity and usually about 30 days post-infection. There was no apparent association between the occurrence of these skin manifestations and the patients' worm burdens, blood eosinophilias or areas of immediate reaction to an intradermal inoculation with worm antigen. Other factors, particularly host immunological reacti

Survey of endoparasites in pet guinea pigs in Italy.

Little information is available on the occurrence of endoparasites in pet guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of intestinal parasites in cavies kept as pets in southern Italy. Fresh fecal samples were randomly collected from 60 guinea pigs housed in pet shops or privately owned. All fecal samples were processed using the FLOTAC pellet technique to identify and count helminthic eggs/larvae and protozoan cysts/oocysts. In addition, the specimens were analyzed also by the Remel Xpect® Giardia/Cryptosporidium immunoassay. Intestinal parasites wer

Fasciola gigantica: larval productivity of sheep-derived miracidia in Radix natalensis and Galba truncatula.

Experimental infections of Egyptian Radix natalensis and French Galba truncatula with miracidia of Fasciola gigantica of sheep were carried out to determine the larval productivity of this parasite. Rediae and cercariae were thus counted in snails dissected at regular intervals from day 21 to day 49 postexposure (p.e.) at 24 degrees C, while cercarial shedding was studied in other two groups of snails after day 30 p.e. At day 49, the total number of free rediae and that of cercariae-containing rediae in R. natalensis (shell height, 10.0 mm) were 71.5 and 44, respectively, whereas mean values i

[Relationship between the prevalence of hepatic milk spots in pig and the egg density of Ascaris suum in Kitakyushu Municipal Meat Inspection and Control Center].

The hepatic milk spots of pigs are chronic interstitial hepatitis, and are caused by the migration of pig ascarid worm, Ascaris suum, into the liver. A large number of livers are condemned in meat inspection centers as defective food once they are found to have developed milk spots, and thus the economic loss is great. Eggs of Ascaris suum from 120 caecum feces of slaughtered pigs were detected by the nylon mesh filtration (Makiya) technique and they were related to the condemnation data of the milk spot livers in Kitakyushu Municipal Meat Inspection and Control Center from April 2000 to Febru

Interactions between the nematode parasite of pigs, Ascaris suum, and the earthworm Aporrectodea longa.

Pig faeces in which Ascaris suum eggs had been embryonating for 57 days were placed in buckets of soil containing either 30 or no earth-worms (Aporrectodea longa). When present, earthworms consumed the faeces and transported the eggs down into the soil, without inflicting any visible damage on the eggs. In later experiments 10 earthworms from the above experiment were fed to each of ten pigs, and another 40 earthworms were dissected. None of the 10 pigs became infected with A. suum through consumption of earthworms, and none of the dissected earthworms were found to contain A. suum larvae. Thi
