Extensive taxonomic studies of the genus Anopheles were carried out in Taiwan during the first half of the 20th century. As a result, 17 species of Anopheles were identified and reported as occurring in Taiwan. However, the occurrence of two species, An. kochi and An. fluviatilis, in Taiwan is doubtful. Vector competence of the anophelines of Taiwan was also studied both in the laboratory and in the field during the same period of time, and experimental infections of 8 species of Anopheles were carried out by Anazawa in the 1920s. A biomedical survey for intestinal parasites was conducted in Napsan on the island of Palawan, Philippines in September 1986. A total of 353 stool specimens were obtained from 155 males and 198 females ranging in age from 1 1/2 months to 70 years. Ascaris lumbricoides, 34.8%, hookworm 34.8% and Trichuris trichiura 25.2% were the most common helminths encountered, while Entamoeba coli 27.7% and Endolinax nana 22.2% were the common protozoans. Two rural Tanzanian primary schools were surveyed to test the hypothesis that parasitic infestation prevents the development of asthma. 242 pupils were interviewed to determine the prevalence of pupils with recurrent episodes of wheezing. The nineteen pupils so discovered had more exercise-induced bronchial lability than equivalently exercised controls. More girls (12.8%) than boys (3.3%) had asthma. Nine hundred and thirty three students of Dacca University were examined: mean haemoglobin levels were 80.5 per cent for men and 70.0 per cent for women. Five hundred and thirty three (57.3%) of the students had single or multiple intestinal parasitic infections, of which Ascaris lumbricoides (366), Entamoeba histolytica (113) and Trichuris trichiura (99) were the commonest. It is suggested that chronic nutritional deficiencies are compounded by these parasites, leading to low weights, and low haemoglobins.
