Mindfulness, Worries, and Parenting in Parents of Children With Type 1 Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Parents of children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) often experience distress and worries, which may negatively impact their parenting behaviors. The current study investigates parental mindfulness (i.e., an enhanced attention to and awareness of current experiences or present reality) as a resilience mechanism. Using a daily diary approach, the predictive role of parental mindfulness for daily diabetes-related worries was examined, its impact upon protective parenting behaviors, and its buffering role in the relationship between daily worries and protective parenting behaviors. METHODS…

Exhausted Parents: Development and Preliminary Validation of the Parental Burnout Inventory.

Can parents burn out? The aim of this research was to examine the construct validity of the concept of parental burnout and to provide researchers which an instrument to measure it. We conducted two successive questionnaire-based online studies, the first with a community-sample of 379 parents using principal component analyses and the second with a community- sample of 1,723 parents using both principal component analyses and confirmatory factor analyses. We investigated whether the tridimensional structure of the burnout syndrome (i.e., exhaustion, inefficacy, and depersonalization) held in

Parental separation, parental alcoholism, and timing of first sexual intercourse.

PURPOSE: We examined timing of first voluntary sexual intercourse as a joint function of parental separation during childhood and parental history of alcoholism. METHODS: Data were drawn from a birth cohort of female like-sex twins (n = 569 African ancestry [AA]; n = 3,415 European or other ancestry [EA]). Cox proportional hazards regression was conducted predicting age at first sex from dummy variables coding for parental separation and parental alcoholism. Propensity score analysis was also employed to compare intact and separated families, stratified by predicted probability of separation.

Parent-infant psychotherapy for improving parental and infant mental health.

BACKGROUND: Parent-infant psychotherapy (PIP) is a dyadic intervention that works with parent and infant together, with the aim of improving the parent-infant relationship and promoting infant attachment and optimal infant development. PIP aims to achieve this by targeting the mother's view of her infant, which may be affected by her own experiences, and linking them to her current relationship to her child, in order to improve the parent-infant relationship directly. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the effectiveness of PIP in improving parental and infant mental health and the parent-infant relatio

The role of parents and non-parents in the supervision of learner drivers in Australia.

The purpose of this study was to contrast the role of parental and non-parental (sibling, other family and non-family) supervisors in the supervision of learner drivers in graduated driver licensing systems. The sample consisted of 522 supervisors from the Australian states of Queensland (n=204, 39%) and New South Wales (n=318, 61%). The learner licence requirements in these two states are similar, although learners in Queensland are required to accrue 100h of supervision in a log book while those in New South Wales are required to accrue 120h. Approximately 50 per cent of the sample (n=255) w

Parents' personality and parenting stress in families of children with spina bifida.

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida (SB) can place parents at risk for increased levels of parenting stress. Little is known, however, about the role of parents' intrapersonal resources. Therefore, based on ideas of the Disability-Stress-Coping Model, relations between the severity of SB, parents' personality traits and parenting stress were examined. METHODS: Forty-six mothers and 37 fathers of children with SB (6-14 years) participated. Severity of SB (physical dysfunctions and cognitive functions), parental personality (Big Five) and parenting stress (Parenting Stress Index) were measured. Multiple r…

Parent beliefs about infant teething: a survey of Australian parents.

OBJECTIVE: Parents ascribe many infant symptoms to teething, despite little evidence to support such an attribution. We report current parental beliefs about teething and its management in a suburban Australian setting. METHODOLOGY: A written questionnaire was given to all English-speaking parents consecutively attending infant hearing testing sessions in one Melbourne municipality between August and October 1997. Approximately 90% of Victorian infants attend these sessions. RESULTS: Parents of 92 infants (mean age 9.9 months) completed questionnaires (97% response rate). Only one believed t

Parent-adolescent conflict and stress when parents are living with AIDS.

Parental perceptions of conflict and stress with their adolescent children are described, and their associations with demographic factors, physical health, and lifestyle are examined. Adolescent-parent conflicts, parenting stress, and parents' health, substance use, and sexual lifestyle were assessed among 151 parents living with AIDS. Parents living with AIDS reported a mean of 3.3 (SD = 1.3) areas of conflict with their adolescents and 1.5 (SD = 1.7) stressful parenting events over the previous 3 months. The parents were very ill, with many physical symptoms and diseases. Simultaneously, sub…

Parental perceptions of child vulnerability, overprotection, and parental psychological characteristics.

While a parental perception of child vulnerability to illness/injury is often used interchangeably with parental overprotection, research suggests that these constructs are independent. Distinct parental psychological characteristics were hypothesized for each construct. The parents of 871 children, ages 22-72 months, completed a four-part protocol (clinical background data, Child Vulnerability Scale, Parent Protection Scale, and Brief Symptom Inventory). A distinct parent symptom profile was found for perceived child vulnerability (somatization, obsessive-compulsiveness, and anxiety). Overpro

Project parent: a preschool speech program implemented through parents.

The effectiveness of parents as teachers of speech production skills was assessed by comparing changes in the phonological skills of their children, made during a period with no intervention, to changes that occurred when parents served as teachers, and by comparing those changes with changes that occurred in a contrast group who received no intervention. Twenty children, 12 in the experimental group and 8 in the contrast group, served as subjects. All children were between 4 and 5 years old at the beginning of the study. Parents were taught, in weekly sessions, to model, reinforce, and in oth

Parent substance use and child-to-parent violence: A brief report.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use has been associated with child-to-parent violence (CPV), yet little is known about the contributing factors. This study investigated the association between parental substance use and substance involved child to parent violence (SU-CPV; i.e., the young person is influenced by a substance), and whether this association was unique to SU-CPV compared to other co-occurring functions of CPV (proactive/instrumental, reactive/response to threat, affective/emotion-related). METHODS: One hundred and nineteen caregivers experiencing abuse-level CPV from a young person (97% f

The Effects of Extended Parental Benefits on Parents' Employment and Earnings in Canada.

Paid parental benefits, with individually earmarked time for mothers and fathers, aim to promote gender equality in labor force participation, wages, and childcare. The Canadian province of Québec expanded parental benefits over and above the federal policy in 2006 with the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP), which introduced paid paternity leave and lower eligibility criteria as its key features. This policy aimed to increase gender equality by encouraging fathers to use parental benefits and expanding coverage to low-income parents. Using Canadian administrative data and exploiting the po
