The bacteriology of fallen leaves (Phylloplane) from council parks and green spaces in Northern Ireland: Clinical significance for at risk people living with cystic fibrosis (CF).

BACKGROUND: People living with cystic fibrosis (CF) may suffer from chronic respiratory infections due to acquired environmental organisms, ultimately leading in increased morbidity and mortality. Consequently, parents of children living with CF frequently ask their CF healthcare professional about sources and potential routes of transmission of environmental organisms to their child. This allows parents to make an informed decision regarding risk assessment/risk management of outdoor/ nature-based activities. Mitigations can then be put in place to help minimise or absolutely avoid exposure o

UNESCO World Heritage Site Park Acts as a Large Natural Attenuation Unit for a Broad Spectrum of Pharmaceuticals.

Pharmaceutical pollution is a global concern due to its pervasive impact on water quality, affecting diverse ecosystems. Despite this fact, contamination within UNESCO heritage natural sites remains understudied. To address this gap, our study focused on assessing pharmaceutical pollution in Pruhonice Park, screening water samples for 98 pharmaceuticals across nine different sites throughout the Park during all four seasons, using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. Our findings identified the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent upstream of the Park bound

Public Spaces as Hotspots of Zoonotic Gastrointestinal Parasite Transmission: Evidence from Small Animal and Soil Surveillance in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Public spaces such as parks and playgrounds offer social and ecological benefits to communities, but it might also pose public health risks. This epidemiological survey investigated the presence and risk factors of zoonotic parasites in faecal and soil samples collected from 60 public spaces across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Malaysia. METHODS: Eggs, cysts and larvae of parasites were collected from 71 faecal and 300 soil samples using flotation-sedimentation techniques. Species identification was done using both morphological and conventional PCR. RESULTS: A total of 71 faecal sa

Source-oriented health risk assessment of heavy metals in soil and dust at coal resource-based urban parks in northern China based on bioaccessibilities.

The mining and utilisation of coal release numerous heavy metals (HMs) into the urban environment, but there are few studies expanding on source-oriented health risk assessment based on bioaccessibility for the identification of health priority control pollutants at coal resource-based cities. Hence, dust and soil samples were collected from urban parks in Datong, Shanxi Province, known as the coal capital of China, to evaluate the pollution level, bioaccessibility, and source-specific health risk assessment. The results revealed severe contamination of As, Cd, and Pb in both soil and dust, wi

Concomitant exposure to air pollution, green space and noise, and risk of myocardial infarction: a cohort study from Denmark.

AIMS: The three correlated environmental exposures (air pollution, road traffic noise, and green space) have all been associated with the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). The present study aimed to analyse their independent and cumulative association with MI. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a cohort of all Danes aged 50 or older in the period 2005-17, 5-year time-weighted average exposure to fine particles (PM2.5), ultrafine particles, elemental carbon, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and road traffic noise at the most and least exposed façades of residence was estimated. Green space around residences was

Five human pathogens detected by tick surveillance in New York City parks, 2014-2015.

A total of 2,504 ticks of 5 species (Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, and H. longicornis) were collected over 2 yr (2014-2015) in New York City parks. Specimens were collected via tick-dragging, identified to species, and tested for pathogens of human diseases. The causative agents of 5 human diseases (Lyme borreliosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever) were detected in a subset of samples. Results of this surveillance effort further illustrate that risk of tick-borne disease is considerable

Knowledge, attitudes, practices (KAP) and control of rabies among community households and health practitioners at the human-wildlife interface in Limpopo National Park, Massingir District, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that kills more than 26,000 people each year in Africa. In Mozambique, poverty and inadequate surveillance result in gross underreporting and ineffective control of the disease in animals and people. Little is known of the role of human attitudes and behaviour in prevention or control of rabies, thus this study was undertaken to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices amongst selected households and health practitioners in one affected area, the Limpopo National Park (LNP), Massingir district. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conduc

Prevalence and molecular identification of Trichinella species isolated from wildlife originating from Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa.

Trichinella species are widely distributed on all continents with the exception of Antarctica, although the full spectrum of Trichinella species found in sub-Saharan African countries, and their hosts, has not been fully documented. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Trichinella in wildlife from the Greater Kruger National Park (GKNP) and adjacent areas located in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa, and to identify the species and/or genotypes of Trichinella larvae isolated from muscle tissues, using molecular techniques. A review of Trichinella spp. and

Seasonal and individual variation in the use of rail-associated food attractants by grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in a national park.

Similar to vehicles on roadways, trains frequently kill wildlife via collisions along railways. Despite the prevalence of this mortality worldwide, little is known about the relative importance of wildlife attractants associated with railways, including spilled agricultural products, enhanced vegetation, invertebrates, and carcasses of rail-killed ungulates. We assessed the relative importance of several railway attractants to a provincially-threatened population of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in Banff and Yoho National Parks, Canada, for which rail-caused mortality has increased in recent de

Using a network model to assess risk of forest pest spread via recreational travel.

Long-distance dispersal pathways, which frequently relate to human activities, facilitate the spread of alien species. One pathway of concern in North America is the possible spread of forest pests in firewood carried by visitors to campgrounds or recreational facilities. We present a network model depicting the movement of campers and, by extension, potentially infested firewood. We constructed the model from US National Recreation Reservation Service data documenting more than seven million visitor reservations (including visitors from Canada) at campgrounds nationwide. This bi-directional m

Transmission of MPXV from fire-footed rope squirrels to sooty mangabeys.

Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV; Orthopoxvirus monkeypox), is on the rise in West and Central Africa1-3. African rodents, especially squirrels, are suspected to be involved in MPXV emergence, but no evidence of a direct transmission to humans or non-human primates has been established4-9. Here we describe an outbreak of MPXV in a group of wild sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) in Taï National Park (Côte d'Ivoire). The outbreak affected one-third of the group, killing four infants. To track its origin, we analysed rodents and wildlife carcasses from the region. We identified a MPXV-in

The possibility of the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus linnaei) dispersing through veterinary facilities in urban areas.

Rhipicephalus linnaei is the most important tick infesting dogs in urban areas of many tropical and subtropical regions of the world, where it can complete its life cycle within human dwellings. This study evaluated the role of veterinary facilities (hospitals, clinics, pet shops) and green areas (parks, public squares) as sources of dispersal of R. linnaei to households. During February 2021-September 2023, we visited 34 veterinary facilities and 51 green areas within São Paulo city. In each facility we inspected the internal premises (waiting/reception, inpatient and exam rooms) for the pres

Knowledge, perceptions, and predictors of zoonotic disease risk among residents of a national park community.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how residents living in Mole National Park, Ghana, understand and perceive zoonotic diseases. By assessing their knowledge sources, perceived transmission pathways, and views on animal reservoirs, the research sought to identify key predictors shaping residents' perception of zoonotic risk and to inform targeted health and conservation interventions. RESULTS: Awareness of zoonotic diseases was widespread, yet only 37% of respondents rated their knowledge as "very good." Self-learning (89%) was the dominant information source, far outweighing formal train

The Effects of Green Spaces and Noise Exposure on the Risk of Ischemic Stroke: A Case-Control Study in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Environmental surroundings reduce the rate of several diseases, especially those related to stressful events. Ischemic stroke can be affected by such events, either directly or through its risk factors. Therefore, the present study evaluates the effects of green spaces and noise exposure on the risk of ischemic stroke. METHODS: A case-control study was carried out, including 200 ischemic stroke cases within the first 48 h of diagnosis and 200 controls, divided equally into hospitalized and non-hospitalized participants. Controls were matched to cases based on age and gender. Socio

Effects of life history stage and climatic conditions on fecal egg counts in plains zebras (Equus quagga) in the Serengeti National Park.

In wildlife, endoparasite burden can be affected by host life history stage, environmental conditions, host abundance, and parasite co-infections. We tested the effects of these factors on gastrointestinal parasite infection in plains zebras (Equus quagga) in the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania, using fecal egg counts of two nematode families (Strongylidae and Ascarididae) and the presence/absence of cestode (Anoplocephalidae) eggs. We predicted higher egg counts of Strongylidae and Ascarididae, and increased likelihood of Anoplocephalidae infection in individuals (1) during energetically costly
