Cytodiagnosis of Basal Cell Adenoma of Parotid Gland: A Rare Case Report.

Basal cell adenoma is a rare benign neoplastic lesion of the parotid gland, therefore it is rarely diagnosed in preoperative work-up by fine needle aspiration cytology. This distinctive entity being regarded as one of the scarce salivary neoplasms is predominantly perceived in the female population, but is uncommon in young adults. It is extremely challenging to diagnose basaloid tumors predominantly basal cell adenoma of the salivary gland on cytopathology. Therefore present case report describes the fine needle aspiration cytology diagnosis of basal cell adenoma in the left parotid gland in

Chondrocalcinosis of the temporomandibular joint: a rare but important diagnosis.

Patients with preauricular masses present with a wide range of pathologies, the most common of which are neoplasms of the parotid gland, metastatic or inflammatory disease, and enlarged periparotid lymph nodes. Other possibilities include lesions that arise from the skull base or the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Chondrocalcinosis is a common age-related phenomenon that has a predilection for fibrocartilage. Although it can involve any joint, the knee is by far the most common site; involvement of the TMJ is very rare. We describe a case of chondrocalcinosis of the TMJ that manifested as a pr

Oncocytoma of the Parotid Gland in the Setting of Birt-Hogg-Dube Syndrome.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline mutations in the FLCN gene, characterized by cutaneous fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts, and an increased risk of renal neoplasms. Parotid oncocytoma is an infrequently reported extracutaneous manifestation of the syndrome. A 30-year-old man with a prior history of testicular embryonal cell carcinoma presented with a right-sided neck mass. Workup of the parotid lesion ultimately led to a new diagnosis of BHD, confirmed by FLCN germline mutation testing. The patient underwent right parotidectomy, which was

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue with plasma cell differentiation: Periodic acid-schiff reaction-positive Dutcher body is a diagnostic clue to distinguish it from plasmacytoma.

We herein report a case of primary parotid extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) with Dutcher bodies. An 82-year-old man presented with a 4 cm × 2.5 cm mass in the left parotid region. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) showed localized abnormal fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the left parotid gland and lymph nodes of the left cervical region. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of the left parotid gland showed lymphoplasmacytoid cells with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive Dutcher bodies. A subsequent excisional bi

Comparing Modified with Conventional Parotidectomy for Benign Parotid Tumors.

PURPOSE: We conducted a study to compare the functional outcomes and surgical complications of patients with benign parotid tumors treated w … groups during a mean follow-up of 29.8 months. CONCLUSION: Modified surgical techniques for benign parotid neoplasms significantly reduced the surgery time and improved the surgery outcomes compared with the conventional approach. This adds to the evidence to support the effectiveness of modified parotidectomy in selected patients with benign parotid tumors.

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

Salivary gland tumours are estimated to represent approximately 3% of all head and neck tumours. About 70-80% of these neoplasms occur in the major salivary glands, with the parotid gland being the most commonly affected site. The metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) has histological characteristics of pleomorphic adenoma, but it has the capacity to generate local recurrences and distant metastases (mainly bones, lungs, and lymph nodes). Despite the fact that some authors consider it to be a benign neoplasia, the 2015 World Health Organisation (WHO) classification of head and neck tumours c

Malignant mixed tumor of salivary origin: a clinicopathologic study of 146 cases.

A 30-year Memorial Hospital experience with 146 patients with malignant mixed tumor is reviewed. These comprised 5% of 2,743 patients who were treated for salivary neoplasms from 1939 through 1968. The tumors arose in the parotid gland in 108 patients, submaxillary gland in 23 patients, mucus or so-called minor salivary glands in 16 patients, and sublingual gland in one. In terms of our total experience, 11% of all submaxillary tumors proved to be of the malignant mixed variety as compared to 6% of parotid tumors and 3% of minor salivary tumors, respectively. Seventy-one patients (48%) had pre

Warthin's tumor distribution within the parotid gland. A feasible etiologic source from lymph nodal tissue.

AIM: Warthin's tumor (WT) is the second commonest parotid gland neoplasm after pleomorphic adenoma (PA). It mainly arises from the lower pole of the superficial parotid lobe (i.e., tail of gland), a site with the greatest distribution of intra-parotid lymph nodes, and its definitive etiopathogenesis is still unclear. The aim of this study was to support the strict topic and etiologic link hypothesised between this tumor and the intraparotid lymph nodes, as being massively present in the tail, by assessing the WT distribution within the parotid gland. METHODS: Seventy-one WTs excised from 64 p

Low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a setting of Warthin's tumor.

Warthin's tumor also known as papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum is a common benign salivary gland neoplasm that occurs exclusively in parotid gland. Rarely, the tumor can undergo carcinomatous or lymphomatous transformation of epithelial or lymphoid component, respectively. Herein, we describe a case of 55-year-old female who had undergone parotidectomy for a rapidly growing tumor in the right parotid gland. The case was diagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinoma developed in a setting of Warthin's tumor based on the histomorphology, special staining characters, and immunohistochemical findings.

Gigantic Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma Mixed With Fibrosarcoma in a Mare: Clinical, Laboratory, Ultrasonography and Histopathology Findings.

Ocular neoplasms represent 10% of all equine neoplasms and ocular squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common one. This report describes the clinical presentation, laboratory, ultrasonography, postmortem, histopathology and immunohistochemistry findings of a mixed ocular neoplasm in a 10-year-old draft mare. The mare had a one-year history of left ocular mass. Complete destruction of the left eye with loss of vision was observed. A large ulcerated mass oozing blood replaced the left eye. Left parotid lymph node was swollen and had a sinus tract discharging pus. Ultrasonography revealed a

Warthin's Tumor: A Rare Case Report of a Bilateral Multifocal Parotid Tumor Associated with an Ectopic Tumor.

Warthin's tumor is the second most common benign neoplasm of the parotid gland and frequently presents with multifocal and bilateral involvement, either synchronously or metachronously, up to 20% - 30% of cases. More rarely, extraparotid locations may also occur. This case report describes a Warthin's tumor presenting synchronously as a multifocal bilateral parotid tumor in association with an extraparotid localization, which, according to the existing literature, appears to be a rare event. This low incidence is likely underestimated and could be explained by several reasons. Increased awaren

Paediatric myofibroma of the parotid gland: a rare masquerade of pleomorphic adenoma.

Paediatric parotid masses are relatively rare clinical entities, with pleomorphic adenoma representing the predominant benign aetiology. We document the clinical trajectory of a male patient in middle childhood presenting with an asymptomatic, progressive left parotid mass. Although preliminary MRI and cytology favoured a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma, the patient underwent a left superficial parotidectomy for definitive management. Histopathological assessment unveiled an unencapsulated spindle cell neoplasm characterised by a vague nodular architecture, hyalinised stroma and increased mit

A Rare Synchronous Existence of Warthin's Tumour and Oral Cancer: A systematic review.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignancy, while Warthin's tumour (WT) is a benign salivary gland neoplasm, typically found in the parotid gland but rarely involving extra-parotid tissues. The synchronous occurrence of OSCC and extra-parotid WT is particularly unusual. Accurate identification of these pathologies is crucial, as their rare presentation can resemble metastasis in lymph nodes. This review systematically searched for case reports and series of synchronous WT and OSCC, including 13 papers having 17 cases. The quality of these cases was assessed using CARE guideline

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland: Case report.

Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor and the most common salivary gland neoplasm. Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma shares histological characteristics with pleomorphic adenoma but exhibits malignant behavior, including local lymph node involvement and/or distant metastasis. Several potential risk factors for metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma have been identified, some of which are associated with incomplete tumor clearance due to inadequate surgical techniques used in the treatment of primary pleomorphic adenoma. Here, we present a rare case of metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma originating f

Unusual locations of lipoma: differential diagnosis of head and neck mass.

BACKGROUND: Lipomas are the most common benign neoplasm of mesenchymal origin and may arise in any location where fat is normally present. In the head and neck region, where only 13% of lipomas are seen, the posterior neck space is the most common site. OBJECTIVE: This article describes two cases of lipoma that were unusually located in the parotid gland and in the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). DISCUSSION: Intraglandular lipoma of the parotid gland should be included as a rare possibility in the differential diagnosis of tumours involving the parotid gland. The extent of surgery should b

A case of giant sarcomatoid carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is a rare malignant parotid neoplasm arising from primary or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma. Histologically, it can be sub-classified by upwards of eight different variations (e.g., myoepithelial carcinoma, salivary duct carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma sarcomatoid carcinoma). We present the fourth case in the literature of sarcomatoid carcinoma arising from an underlying pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. We present a case of a 47-year-old female who consulted for a left parotid mass of 15cm long axis. There was no facial paralysis. Fine needle

Carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland consisting of high-grade salivary duct carcinoma and keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma.

Carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare salivary gland malignancy that presents diagnostic difficulties partly because of its wide range of histologic presentations. We report a case of a 77-year-old man, who presented with a 6-year history of a parotid mass that had undergone rapid growth within weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an infiltrative mass in the parotid gland, and the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy result was highly suspicious for carcinoma. Subsequent excision of the tumor demonstrated a poorly differentiated epithelial neoplasm consisting of keratinizing s

Clinically presumed primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland with extensive cervical lymph node metastasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary malignant melanoma of the parotid gland (PMMPG) is an exceedingly rare neoplasm, accounting for < 0.7% of all parotid malignancies. Differentiating it from metastatic melanoma to the parotid is clinically critical but diagnostically challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old Chinese man presented with a 6-month history of a painless, enlarging left parotid mass. Extensive physical examination and imaging (CT and MRI) of the head, neck, and chest revealed no extraparotid primary lesion.
