Parotid Gland Solitary Fibrous Tumor Presenting as a Long Duration Mass: A Case Report.

The solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a tumor of uncertain histogenesis, affecting deep soft tissues, particularly the pleura (pulmonary) and extrapulmonary sites including thighs, retroperitoneum, other serosal surfaces, and cranial and spinal meninges. SFT and hemangiopericytoma are now considered the same entity, with general agreement on referring to this group of tumors as "SFT." SFTs are generally benign tumors with small subsets of malignant ones. Moreover, they are well-circumscribed with a good prognosis after surgical resection. SFTs are uncommon in the head and neck and are quite rare

Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of branchial cleft cysts by CT scan.

The author stresses the importance of CT scanning in diagnosing branchial cleft cysts (BCCs) and in differentiating them from other cystic masses of the neck and parotid region. The CT examinations of 40 patients with neck or parotid cystic lesions suspected of being BCCs have been reviewed and correlated with the histological diagnosis. Sixteen BCCs (12 of the second and 4 of the first cleft) and 24 BCC mimics were evaluated. A definitive CT diagnosis of second BCC was possible in 83% of the cases. Exclusion of this diagnosis was possible in 94% of BCC mimics. The total accuracy of CT was 90%…

Ultrasound GLCM texture analysis of radiation-induced parotid-gland injury in head-and-neck cancer radiotherapy: an in vivo study of late toxicity.

PURPOSE: Xerostomia (dry mouth), secondary to irradiation of the parotid glands, is one of the most common side effects of head-and-neck cancer radiotherapy. Diagnostic tools able to accurately and efficiently measure parotid gland injury have yet to be introduced into the clinic. This study's purpose is to investigate sonographic textural features as potential imaging signatures for quantitative assessment of parotid-gland injury after head-and-neck radiotherapy. METHODS: The authors have investigated a series of sonographic features obtained from the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) -

Emergency parotidectomy for penetrating zone III neck trauma.

Penetrating trauma to the face and upper zone III of the neck may present unique challenges when the parotid gland and associated neurovascular structures are involved. We report a case of massive hemorrhage from penetrating neck trauma that necessitated emergency parotidectomy for vascular exposure. Facial nerve repair was also necessary, underscoring the importance of this approach not only for successful vascular control but also for preservation of nearby vital structures. The management of penetrating trauma to the parotid region, and relevant anatomy, are discussed.

[Assessment of parotid gland dose variations by helical tomotherapy adaptive system in head and neck cancer].

The paper introduces a helical tomotherapy (HT) adaptive system in assessment of parotid gland dose variation in head and neck cancer. The system, which helical therapy unit is equipped with, is based on megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) images to calculate the actual volume and dose of region of interest (ROI). Whether to change plan is judged on the fact for the realization of adaptive radiotherapy. One case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was as a sample to evaluate parotid gland dose variation during the treatment. On every week and last time, patient was scanned by MVCT before treatment,

Apocrine Hidrocystoma of the Parotid Gland.

Apocrine hidrocystoma is a cystic tumor originating from apocrine sweat glands. It is predominantly located in the eyelid margins. Here, we report a case of apocrine hidrocystoma of the parotid gland in a 19-year-old man who was referred to our outpatient clinic with a 5-year history of a gradual swelling in the left parotid region. The patient underwent left superficial parotidectomy. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of apocrine hidrocystoma. The case is original by the tumor's location: to the best of our knowledge, this could be the first case in English and French literatur…

Sialosis: Cytomorphological significance in the diagnosis of an uncommon entity.

A diffuse, chronic, usually bilateral, noninflammatory, nonneoplastic enlargement of major salivary glands is termed as Sialosis or Sialadenosis. It is an extremely uncommon cause for enlargement of the parotid gland. We hereby present a case of a 45-year-old female patient having a swelling at the left preauricular region. The swelling was gradually increasing in size since 6 months. On clinical examination, the swelling was 3 cm × 3 cm, mobile, and nontender. On ultrasonography, it was suggestive of benign parotid lesion or parotitis with cervical lymphadenopathy. On fine needle aspiration c

Mature Cystic Teratoma of the Parotid Gland: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Teratomas are germ cell tumors typically originating in the gonads. Extragonadal occurrences, particularly in the parotid gland, are exceedingly rare. Due to their nonspecific clinical presentation, these tumors often pose a diagnostic challenge. We report a rare case of a mature cystic teratoma of the parotid gland in an 18-year-old female, who presented with a painless, slow-growing mass in the right postauricular region persisting for over a decade. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a lobulated mass with high signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted sequences. The patient underwe

Rare Presentation of Acinic Cell Carcinoma in the Parotid Gland.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) arising in the salivary glands is a rare tumor. It is a low-grade malignant salivary gland tumor. It is predominantly seen in females and occurs in the fifth and sixth decades of life. It is mostly located in the parotid gland. ACC has a significant potential for recurrence and metastasis. Therefore, long-term follow-up is necessary after treatment. Here, a 28-year-old male presented with right preauricular swelling for 9 months. Ultrasound of the head-and-neck region and fine-needle aspiration cytology of preauricular swelling suggest the diagnosis of neoplasm in t

Tuberculosis of parotid gland: a rare clinical entity.

Tuberculosis (TB) can affect almost any organ of the body; however, TB of the salivary glands is a rare condition. The purpose of this paper was to report a case of a 14-year-old boy who presented with a painless swelling and discharging sinus in the parotid gland and cervical region on the left side. There was no clinical evidence of systemic signs and symptoms of active TB elsewhere in the body. The combination of clinical suspicion, a positive family history, and the cytological findings confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was successfully treated via antitubercular therapy for six months.
