We report a case of a 55-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease undergoing intermittent peritoneal dialysis who developed peritonitis secondary to an infection with Pasteurella multocida resulting from a cat bite or cat scratch penetrating her peritoneal dialysis tubing. This case points out the potential importance of household pets as a source of peritoneal contamination.

To investigate the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida (Pm) Type B in large-eared white rabbits, the Pm strain C45-2 (C45-2) was used to infect rabbits. The clinical symptoms and post-mortem pathological changes of the rabbits were observed. Multiple tissues were collected from the deceased rabbits for pathological sectioning and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Additionally, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was employed to detect the load of C45-2 in each tissue. The results showed that the minimum lethal dose (MLD) of the C45-2 to rabbits was 5 CFU. After infection, the rabbits exhibi

Infections secondary to Pasteurella multocida frequently occur in patients who have been exposed to domestic pets. Human infections caused by Pasteurella multocida vary in severity, and clinical features include localised cellulitis, osteomyelitis, systemic bacteraemia, meningitis and pneumonia. No vaccine has been developed against Pasteurella multocida; it is treated with antibacterial agents and, in most cases, surgical intervention. This article discusses the authors' experience in treating a woman with severe cellulitis and osteomyelitis on her hand caused by Pasteurella multocida. She re

This is a case of Pasteurella multocida septic shock encountered in a 7-week-old infant without any bites, scratch marks, or history of licks by pet animals (dog and cats in household). The infant required 3 days of vasopressor support and 4 days of mechanical ventilation to achieve normal hemodynamics. This is an unidentified route of transmission and our literature search for this topic discovered reported cases of life-threatening presentation with Pasteurella infections in the absence of a bite or any form of invasive contact with animals. We believe that this is an important public safety

A capsule-defective mutant strain PBA129 of Pasteurella multocida was constructed by electroporation of phagemid containing the coding region of the antisense RNA of the ompH gene into the wild type strain X-73 (serovar A:1) of P. multocida. The pathogenicity and protective potency of the mutant against homologous and heterologous challenge in mice and chickens were characterized. Greyish colonies of the mutant, indicating lower capsule thickness, on selective dextrose starch agar were observed under an obliquely transmitted light stereomicroscope and compared to iridescent colonies of the wil

Pasteurella multocida is a pathogenic, Gram-negative bacterium that is commonly found as normal flora in nasopharynx of variety of wild and domestic animals. Numerous virulence factors have been described for P. multocida isolates which include adherence and colonization factors, iron-regulated and acquisition proteins, extracellular enzymes such as neuraminidase, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), capsule and a variety of outer membrane proteins (Omp). OmpA has a significant role in stabilizing the cell envelope structure by providing physical linkage between the outer membrane & peptidoglycan. It has

Pasteurella multocida is a rare cause of prosthetic joint infection. This infection generally follows significant animal contact, usually licks and scratches. We report a case of P multocida infection that was treated with linezolid with salvage of the implant. Linezolid is generally active against Gram-positive organisms only with the exception of Pasteurella, which is Gram-negative. We extensively review the previous reported cases of implant infection with P multocida.

Pasteurella multocida is a leading cause of fowl cholera in both free-range pasture and conventional/commercially raised poultry. Its infection is a serious threat to poultry health and overall flock viability. Organic poultry is comparatively more vulnerable to this pathogen. It is a significant cause of production loss and price increase of poultry products, specifically organic poultry products. Some plant products are well documented as sources of natural antimicrobials such as polyphenols found in different berry pomaces and citrus oil. Pomace, a byproduct (primarily of seeds and skins) o

Several bacteria belonging to the family Pasteurellaceae are potential pathogens in rabbits. In particular, Pasteurella multocida is considered to be important, and outbreaks caused by this species result in considerable economic losses in rabbitries. However, Pasteurellaceae spp. isolated from rabbits are poorly characterized, and thus, proper identification of P. multocida isolates from these animals is problematic and often unsatisfactory, thereby hampering epidemiological investigations. Therefore, 228 isolates from rabbit populations originating from a breeding and fattening organization

Most Pasteurella multocida human infections involve skin and soft tissues and invariably develop after a bite or a scratch from a dog or a cat. However, other infections with this organism occur infrequently. Enteric microorganisms are the common cause of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP). We report a case of SBP in a cirrhotic patient from P. multocida. English literature (Pubmed) review revealed 12 adult cases of SBP in cirrhotic patients with P multocida. Nine patients were exposed to animals, though a break in the skin or a bite was not reported in each case. The SBP was fatal in fou

Pasteurella multocida A:3 was isolated during an outbreak of pasteurellosis in Flemish Giant (FG) rabbits. Since New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits housed in the same room were not as severely affected as FG rabbits, experimental inoculation was undertaken to determine if FG rabbits were more susceptible than NZW rabbits to pasteurellosis induced by this isolate. Rabbits of each breed were inoculated with P. multocida A:3 and observed for 3 weeks. Four of 5 FG rabbits developed severe clinical disease on days 6, 9, 12 and 14 after inoculation; whereas, the one affected NZW rabbit became ill 14 da

Nine cases of pleuro-pulmonary infection due to Pasteurella multocida were observed over an 11 year-period (1974-1984) occurring in seven men and two women, with a mean age of 65 (range: 47-80 years). There were 4 pneumonias and 5 cases of empyema, occurring on three occasions after septicemia. There was a background of depressed immunity in 7 cases: alcoholic cirrhosis (4 cases), blood dyscrasias (2 cases), breast cancer (1 case); and of a chronic broncho-pulmonary pathology in two cases. Animal inoculation was present in six cases but only one case of pneumonia followed injury by an animal (

To investigate to what extent healthy chickens and turkeys may be carriers of Pasteurella multocida, oral swabs were examined from birds in flocks with or without a history of avian pasteurellosis. In all 841 specimens were examined by cultural methods but 142 were also tested by mouse inoculation. P multocida was not found in specimens from normal healthy flocks but was recovered from some live chickens in known infected flocks and from dead turkeys on an infected farm. The implications of these findings are briefly discussed.

Pasteurella multocida is primarily recognized as a respiratory pathogen in various animal species. However, sporadic cases of zoonotic infection in humans have also been reported. Understanding the distribution of capsular types is important for improving treatment strategies and developing preventive measures. This study aimed to determine the capsular type and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of P. multocida isolates obtained from cattle. P. multocida isolates from 650 cattle samples were initially identified by conventional phenotypic methods and subsequently confirmed by PCR. Capsular

Hemorrhagic septicemia (HS) is a fulminant bovine disease across Asia and Africa, yet Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) isolated from yak is poorly reported. We isolated strain NQ01 from a fatal HS case in Xizang, China and identified it as P. multocida B:2 by morphology, Gram stain, and PCR (kmt1+, bcbD+, LPS L2). NQO1 formed smooth, non-hemolytic colonies. After Gram staining, the cells appeared as red rods with bipolar staining. Antimicrobial testing showed broad susceptibility to β-lactams, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, midecamycin, florfenicol, polymyxin, and vancom

Pasteurella multocida is a facultative anaerobic and gram-negative bacteria. It lives in the upper airway of animals, especially dogs and cats. P. multocida infection commonly results in regional cellulitis, although septic shock complication is uncommon. Here, we report on a fatal case of septic shock developing from a natural knee joint infection.

Pasteurella multocida is a small Gram-negative organism that usually causes a localized infection after exposure to cat or dog scratches, bites, or licking wounds. Invasive infections, such as bacteremia and endocarditis, are very rare yet serious conditions that are associated with high morbidity and mortality, particularly in patients with major comorbidities. Here, we report a case of a 47-year-old male who presented to the hospital with altered mental status two weeks after a fall and was found to have a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Further workup revealed Pasteurella multocida bacteremia and

Neurologic diseases are common in domestic cats, and infectious agents are suspected to be the primary cause in 30-45% of cases. Among infectious etiologies, those of bacterial origin are only sporadically characterized in the literature, with few of these reports correlating gross and histologic findings with confirmatory bacteriologic identification. Here, we describe bacterial meningitis and meningoencephalomyelitis associated with Pasteurella multocida in 3 domestic cats. Purulent exudate expanding the cerebral meninges was grossly evident in 2 of the cases. In all 3 cases, histologic chan
