Transgenerational effects of paternal dietary Astragalus polysaccharides on spleen immunity of broilers.

Our previous study indicated that paternal dietary Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) could induce endotoxin tolerance-like response in jejunum of offspring chickens. There exist positive interaction between intestinal mucosal immunity and systemic immunity. So we studied the transgenerational effect and nutri-epigenetic role of paternal dietary APS on spleen immunity. 64 one-day-old Avein breeder cocks were used in a single-factor design with 0 and 10g/kg APS, respectively, 4 replicated cages each group, and 8 birds each cage. When the breeder cocks at 40-week-age, semen of cocks was collected

Paternity and kin structure among neighbouring groups in wild bonobos at Wamba.

Although both bonobos and chimpanzees are male-philopatric species, outcomes of male-male reproductive competition seem to be more closely associated with mating success in chimpanzees. This suggests that the extent of male reproductive skew is lower in bonobos. In addition, between-group male-male reproductive competition is more lethal in chimpanzees. This suggests that between-group differentiation in male kinship is lower in bonobos. We analysed the paternity of 17 offspring in two bonobo groups and estimated the relatedness of individuals among three neighbouring groups by using DNA extra

Paternal malnutrition programs breast cancer risk and tumor metabolism in offspring.

BACKGROUND: While many studies have shown that maternal factors in pregnancy affect the cancer risk for offspring, few studies have investigated the impact of paternal exposures on their progeny's risk of this disease. Population studies generally show a U-shaped association between birthweight and breast cancer risk, with both high and low birthweight increasing the risk compared with average birthweight. Here, we investigated whether paternal malnutrition would modulate the birthweight and later breast cancer risk of daughters. METHODS: Male mice were fed AIN93G-based diets containing eithe

[Prenatal diagnosis of two cases of paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 6].

OBJECTIVE: To report on prenatal diagnosis and follow up of two patients with paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 6 (pUPD6). METHODS: Fetal cells were subjected to in situ culturing and G-banded chromosomal analysis. DNA samples of the fetuses and their parents were also analyzed with single nucleotide polymorphism microarray (SNP array). RESULTS: Both fetuses had a normal male karyotype. SNP array analysis showed both have carried pUPD6. CONCLUSION: pUPD6 can lead to transient neonatal diabetes mellitus type 1. Homozygous status of recessive mutations, disorder of gene imprinting, an

Paternal environmental enrichment transgenerationally alters affective behavioral and neuroendocrine phenotypes.

Recent studies have demonstrated that paternal stress in rodents can result in modification of offspring behavior. Environmental enrichment, which enhances cognitive stimulation and physical activity, modifies various behaviors and reduces stress responses in adult rodents. We investigated the transgenerational influence of paternal environmental enrichment on offspring behavior and physiological stress response. Adult C57BL/6J male mice (F0) were exposed to either environmental enrichment or standard housing for four weeks and then pair-mated with naïve females. The F2 generation was generate

De Novo Paternal FBN1 Mutation Detected in Embryos Before Implantation.

BACKGROUND Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in the Fibrillin (FBN)1 gene and characterized by disorders in the cardiovascular, skeletal, and visual systems. The diversity of mutations and phenotypic heterogeneity of MFS make prenatal molecular diagnoses difficult. In this study, we used pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to identify the pathogenic mutation in a male patient with MFS and to determine whether his offspring would be free of the disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS The history and pedigree of the proband were analyzed. Mutation analysis was

Delta-beta coupling is associated with paternal caregiving behaviors during preschool.

Neural systems that index self-regulation have been associated with mental health outcomes, including risk for anxiety problems, from early in life. Yet, little is known about the environmental factors that may impact the development of neural systems of regulation. Behavioral work suggests that sensitive parenting, or parents' ability to correctly interpret and respond to children's signals, supports the development of regulation. Conversely, harsh parenting, or uninvolved or punitive parent behaviors, is thought to compromise developing regulatory systems. We recorded preschoolers' baseline

Paternal age and offspring congenital heart defects: a national cohort study.

Paternal age has been associated with offspring congenital heart defects (CHDs), which might be caused by increased mutations in the germ cell line because of cumulated cell replications. Empirical evidences, however, remain inconclusive. Furthermore, it is unknown whether all subtypes of CHDs are affected by paternal age. We aimed to explore the relationship between paternal age and the risk of offspring CHDs and its five common subtypes using national register data in Denmark. A total of 1,893,899 singletons born in Denmark from 1977 to 2008 were included in this national-based cohort study.

Prenatal findings and epimutations for paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 14 syndrome.

The phenotypes associated with paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 14 (UPD(14)pat) are clinically distinctive and caused by genetic alterations at the 14q32.2 imprinted region. Here we describe prenatal and neonatal findings in a case of epimutation associated with UPD(14)pat-like phenotype. A 25-year-old Japanese woman was referred to hospital at 32 weeks of gestation for management of threatened premature delivery. Fetal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging showed a narrow thorax and polyhydramnios. At 35 weeks of gestation, emergency cesarean section was performed and placentome

Paternal inheritance of classic X-linked bilateral periventricular nodular heterotopia.

Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PNH) is a developmental disorder of the central nervous system, characterized by heterotopic nodules of gray matter resulting from disturbed neuronal migration. The most common form of bilateral PNH is X-linked dominant inherited, caused by mutations in the Filamin A gene (FLNA) and associated with a wide variety of other clinical findings including congenital heart disease. The typical patient with FLNA-associated PNH is female and presents with difficult to treat seizures. In contrast, hemizygous FLNA loss of function mutations in males are reported to be

Multiple paternity in the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae).

The reproductive strategies and variation in reproductive success of ticks are poorly understood. We determined variation in multiple paternity in the American dog tick Dermancentor variabilis . In total, 48 blood-engorged female ticks and 22 male companion ticks were collected from 13 raccoon ( Procyon lotor ) hosts. In the laboratory, 56.3% of blood-engorged females laid eggs, of which 37.0% hatched or showed signs of development. We examined the presence of multiple paternity in the ensuing clutches by genotyping groups of eggs and larvae at 5 microsatellite loci and subtracting the known m

Pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1b due to paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 20q.

CONTEXT: Pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1b (PHP1b) is the result of end-organ resistance to PTH and other hormones such as TSH in the absence of any features of Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy. Patients with PHP1b show imprinting abnormalities at the complex GNAS locus. The molecular cause of autosomal dominant familial PHP1b has been well-defined with identification of microdeletions within the GNAS locus or the nearby STX16, but the molecular mechanism of the GNAS imprinting defects in sporadic PHP1b cases remains elusive. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the underlying molecular mechanism of

Lead acetate induced reproductive and paternal mediated developmental toxicity in rats.

Lead was administered orally to adult male rats at exposure level of 273 or 819 mg/L (0.05% or 0.15% lead acetate, respectively) for 45 days via drinking water. At the end of the exposure period, control and experimental males were mated with untreated females. Of the females mated with treated males, 73.3% in the 0.05% group and 53.33% in the 0.15% group showed copulatory plugs. Significant decrease in number of implantations and pre- and post-implantation loss was also observed in females mated with treated males. Significant decrease in the weight of the reproductive organs, reduction in ep

Paternal psychosocial characteristics and corporal punishment of their 3-year-old children.

This study uses data from 2,309 biological fathers who participated in the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study (FFCWS) to examine associations between psychosocial characteristics and levels of corporal punishment (CP) toward their 3-year-old children over the past month. Results indicate that 61% of the fathers reported no CP over the past month, 23% reported using CP once or twice, and 16% reported using CP a few times in the past month or more. In multivariate models controlling for important sociodemographic factors as well as characteristics of the child, fathers' parenting stress

Preconceptional paternal exposure to depleted uranium: transmission of genetic damage to offspring.

Depleted uranium (DU) is an alpha particle emitter and radioactive heavy metal used in military applications. Due to internalization of DU during military operations and the ensuing chronic internal exposure to DU, there are concerns regarding its potential health effects. Preconceptional paternal irradiation has been implicated as a causal factor in childhood cancer and it has been suggested that this paternal exposure to radiation may play a role in the occurrence of leukemia and other cancers to offspring. Similarly, in vivo heavy metal studies have demonstrated that carcinogenic effects ca

Paternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy are related to excessive infant crying.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive infant crying, or infantile colic, is a common and often stress-inducing problem for parents that can ultimately result in child abuse. From previous research it is known that maternal depression is related to excessive crying, but so far little is known about the influence of paternal depression. METHODS: In a prospective, population-based study, we obtained information on both maternal and paternal depressive symptoms at 20 weeks of pregnancy by using the Brief Symptom Inventory. Parental depressive symptoms were related to excessive crying in 4426 two-month-old infants
