This paper reports on a case of a 70-year-old physician diagnosed with a parietal lobe abscess following such treatment. After stereotactic biopsy and drainage and a 6-week course of intravenous antibiotic treatment, the patient recovered with minimal neurologic deficits. Although brain abscesses are not commonly encountered in practice, clinicians must be aware of the potential virulence of the anaerobic components of the periodontal pocket and the possibility of resulting systemic infection, which can produce a life-threatening situation.

The pus from a series of 41 peritonsillar abscesses was examined bacteriologically. In the majority of the abscesses a mixed bacterial flora was found. The specimens yielded 0-7 different bacterial species per abscess (mean 3.0). One species alone was isolated only in five cases (12.5%). Serum and internal genital tissue levels of CPM were measured following intravenous drip infusion of 1 g. This case report presents a case of gas gangrene of the leg caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, the first such case reported. Fusobacterium should now be included in the differential diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis of the extremities.
