Morbidity and patient perception of flexible laryngoscopy.

OBJECTIVES: The recently published Clinical Practice Guideline: Hoarseness (Dysphonia) revealed major deficits in the literature regarding r … sthesia and scope placement in the nose and pharynx; 3) fear of future examinations; and 4) patient perception and past experience. Concurrently, the laryngoscopist reported the complications and anatomic variations encountered. RESULTS: The discomfort and pain ratings from both the anesthetic spray and the scope placement were low. No statistically signifi …

Perception of biological motion in visual agnosia.

Over the past 25 years, visual processing has been discussed in the context of the dual stream hypothesis consisting of a ventral ("what") and a dorsal ("where") visual information processing pathway. Patients with brain damage of the ventral pathway typically present with signs of visual agnosia, the inability to identify and discriminate objects by visual exploration, but show normal perception of motion perception. A dissociation between the perception of biological motion and non-biological motion has been suggested: perception of biological motion might be impaired when "non-biological" m…

On the emergence of primary visual perception.

We propose a concise novel conceptual and biological framework for the analysis of primary visual perception (PVP) that refers to the most basic levels of our awake subjective visual experiences. Neural representations for image content elaborated within V1/V2 and the early occipitotemporal (ventral) loop remain only latent with respect to PVP until spatially localized with respect to an attending observer. This process requires more than the downstream deployment of attentional resources onto targeted neurons. Additionally, the source neurons for such processes must be linked to a neural repr…

Surface color perception and equivalent illumination models.

Vision provides information about the properties and identity of objects. The ease with which we perceive object properties belies the difficulty of the underlying information-processing task. In the case of object color, retinal information about object reflectance is confounded with information about the illumination as well as about the object's shape and pose. There is no obvious rule that allows transformation of the retinal image to a color representation that depends primarily on object surface reflectance. Under many circumstances, however, object color appearance is remarkably stable

Embodied visual perception of distorted finger postures.

Bodily abnormalities in other persons often evoke an uneasy feeling, even disgust. Here, we studied the brain basis of such perceptual salience by presenting static pictures of distorted hand postures to healthy subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Cortical activation sensitive to distorted (vs. natural) finger postures was found-with right-hemispheric dominance-in the primary motor cortex, postcentral somatosensory areas, amygdala, and insula, and bilaterally in the putamen. This activation pattern suggests that the instantaneous "gut feelings" during the observation of bodi

Pain perception studies in tension-type headache.

Tension-type headache (TTH) is a disorder with high prevalence and significant impact on society. Understanding of pathophysiology of TTH is paramount for development of effective treatments and prevention of chronification of TTH. Our aim was to review the findings from pain perception studies of pathophysiology of TTH as well as to review the research of pathophysiology of TTH. Pain perception studies such as measurement of muscle tenderness, pain detection thresholds, pain tolerance thresholds, pain response to suprathreshold stimulation, temporal summation and diffuse noxious inhibitory co…

Distance perception in autism and typical development.

Children with autism and typically developing children walked blindfolded to a previously seen target (blindwalking task) and matched the fr … ve to the other spatial extents. These latter representations involve a form of large-scale pattern perception that may mature more slowly than representations of egocentric distance and develop atypically in autism.

How do disaster characteristics influence risk perception?

The main purpose of this study is to examine how risk perception is influenced by the type of disaster (flood or landslide) and victim characteristics. The data reported here are based on the National Risk Perception Survey (NRPS) that was administered for the victims and the general public in Taiwan in 2004. In that year, many towns in Taiwan were seriously affected by floods and landslides, resulting in huge economic losses and fatalities. The primary findings are: (1) the victims and the general public are concerned about the different potential hazards that might affect their residential a…

Perception of across-frequency interaural level differences.

The interaural level difference (ILD) is an important cue for the localization of sound sources. Just noticeable differences (JND) in ILD were measured in 12 normal hearing subjects for uncorrelated noise bands with a bandwidth of 13 octave and a different center frequency in both ears. In one ear the center frequency was either 250, 500, 1000, or 4000 Hz. In the other ear, a frequency shift of 0, 16, 13, or 1 octave was introduced. JNDs in ILD for unshifted, uncorrelated noise bands of 13 octave width were 2.6, 2.6, 2.5, and 1.4 dB for 250, 500, 1000, and 4000 Hz, respectively. Averaged over

Emotional perception deficits in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive deficits associated with frontal lobe dysfunction can occur in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), particularly in individuals with bulbar ALS who can also suffer pathologic emotional lability. Because frontal pathophysiology can alter emotional perception, we examined whether emotional perception deficits occur in ALS, and whether they are related to depressive or dementia symptoms. METHODS: Bulbar ALS participants (n=13) and age-matched healthy normal controls (n=12) completed standardized tests of facial emotional and prosodic recognition, the Geriatric Depression Sca…

Information and uncertainty in remote perception research.

This article has four purposes: 1) to present for the first time in archival form all results of some 25 years of remote perception research at this laboratory; 2) to describe all of the analytical scoring methods developed over the course of this program to quantify the amount of anomalous information acquired in the experiments; 3) to display a remarkable anti-correlation between the objective specificity of those methods and the anomalous yield of the experiments; and 4) to discuss the phenomenological and pragmatic implications of this complementarity. The formal database comprises 653 exp…

Subtypes of social perception deficits in schizophrenia.

Persons with schizophrenia exhibit consistent deficits in emotion perception (recognizing the emotional expressions of others), but it is currently unclear if their performance represents a specific deficit in identifying emotions only or is a more generalized deficit across different perception tasks. To address this question, it is important to compare emotion perception with face and general visual perception to assess the type of deficit present. The equivocal nature of previous research may suggest the presence of subtypes with different levels and patterns of performance on social percep…

The microgenesis of global perception in autism.

Several studies have reported that individuals with autism and Asperger's syndrome show a local processing bias on tasks involving features and configurations. This study assessed whether this bias results from differences in the perception of features or a cognitive bias to attend to features in autism as a consequence of a deficit in attending to configurations. Children with autism and typically developing children performed a task assessing the initial perceptual representation of features and configurations following a 50 ms stimulus display and the development of the perceptual represent…

Neural correlates of coherent audiovisual motion perception.

Real-life moving objects are often detected by multisensory cues. We investigated the cortical activity associated with coherent visual motion perception in the presence of a stationary or moving auditory noise source using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Twelve subjects judged episodes of 5-s random-dot motion containing either no (0%) or abundant (16%) coherent direction information. Auditory noise was presented with the displayed visual motion that was moving in phase, was moving out-of-phase, or was stationary. Subjects judged whether visual coherent motion was present, and if so, w…

Determinants of perception of heartburn and regurgitation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is not known why some reflux episodes evoke symptoms and others do not. We investigated the determinants of perception of gastro-oesophageal reflux. METHODS: In 32 patients with symptoms suggestive of gastro-oesophageal reflux, 24 hour ambulatory pH and impedance monitoring was performed after cessation of acid suppressive therapy. In the 20 patients who had at least one symptomatic reflux episode, characteristics of symptomatic and asymptomatic reflux episodes were compared. RESULTS: A total of 1807 reflux episodes were detected, 203 of which were symptomatic. Compar…
