Unusual presentation of orbital cysticercosis in subperiosteal space.

The authors describe a previously unreported case of subperiosteal orbital cysticercosis in a child. Surgical incision on the periosteum led to the extrusion of a cyst, which was confirmed histopathologically. Cysticercosis should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of subperiosteal abscess.

Correction of post-surgical synmastia after stepwise treatment of pectus excavatum and breast asymmetry-A case report.

We present a case of a 30-year-old female patient requiring correction of post-surgical synmastia after stepwise treatment of pectus excavat … tom-made thoracic implant and the breast implants. Corrective surgery exposed the subjacent sternal periosteum excising a central wedge of the custom-made implant, allowing for quilting sutures between breast skin and periosteum to reconstruct the intermammary fold. Breast asymmetry was corrected using different implants that were hold in place by a syntheti …

A Modification of Fenestration Technique (MOFT) to Increase Vestibular Depth: A Case Series.

The most prevalent mucogingival issues include insufficient gingival width, decreased vestibular depth, abnormal frenal attachment, gingival … estibule where vestibular deepening was conducted by giving a full-thickness incision to expose the periosteum and create a window of fenestration followed by suturing the labial mucosa to the periosteum at the apical level. The results reported an excellent post-operative outcome showing increased depth of the vestibule.

Comparison of perioperative serum osteocrin concentrations between surgical techniques in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common orthopedic disease in dogs that is usually managed with tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) or extracapsular lateral suture (ECLS). Osteotomy is generally associated with some complications, including nonunion. The periosteum plays an important role in bone growth and remodeling. Osteocrin (OSTN), which was recently identified and is involved in bone formation and differentiation, is produced in the periosteum and osteoblasts. The aimed to investigate whether the concentrations of serum OSTN change before and after stifle surgery in …

Overexpression of BMP3 in the developing skeleton alters endochondral bone formation resulting in spontaneous rib fractures.

Bone morphogenetic protein-3 (BMP) has been identified as a negative regulator in the skeleton as mice lacking BMP3 have increased bone mass. To further understand how BMP3 mediates bone formation, we created transgenic mice overexpressing BMP3 using the type I collagen promoter. BMP3 transgenic mice displayed spontaneous rib fractures that were first detected at E17.0. The fractures were due to defects in differentiation of the periosteum and late hypertrophic chondrocytes resulting in thinner cortical bone with decreased mineralization. As BMP3 modulates BMP and activin signaling through Act…

Bone resorption of the proximal phalanx after tendon pulley reconstruction.

A 35-year-old male worker sustained a degloving injury of the left hand. An abdominal flap was used for skin coverage. Tenolysis and reconstruction of the A2 pulley was done using a procedure based on the 3-loop technique, which was modified by putting the tendon loop under the extensor apparatus and periosteum. X-ray revealed hourglass-shaped bone resorption around the proximal phalanx, just under the reconstructed pulley. Diaphyseal narrowing remained present in follow-up x-rays obtained 9 and 10 years later. The remodeling of the resorption was poor. Too much pressure may have caused this b…

Missed Sleeve Fracture of the Superior Pole of Patella.

Patellar sleeve fracture is a form of injury in which small osseous fragments avulsed with periosteum and cartilage. 15-year-old male patient, playing in school football team, apllied to our clinic with a history of previously missed patellar superior pole sleeve avulsion fracture. Care must be taken in order not to miss the patellar superior pole sleeve fractures, which are very rare in children. Extra care must be taken in patients, whose X-ray imaging is clean but there is a problem in the extensor mechanism of the knee. INTRODUCTION Since the patella has high mobility and large cartilage s…

A technique for the non-microsurgical reconstruction of thumb tip amputations.

PURPOSE: This article aims to present a technique for thumb tip amputations using a homodigital soft-tissue/periosteum flap and a portion of the amputated digit. METHODS: Eight patients (aged 21-53 years) with avulsion thumb tip amputations were reviewed. We report a new technique in which a bone and nailbed composite graft was taken from the amputated portion of the thumb and a dorsoulnar flap combined with periosteum was harvested from the first metacarpal and designed to cover the volar bone. Patients were evaluated 6 months after surgery for functional and cosmetic outcomes. RESULTS: The…

[Orbital fractures in children].

The aim of this article is to review data concerning paediatric orbital fractures. These fractures exhibit strong specificities because they … -door fracture involving the ocular muscles and the compressive haematomas. We hypothesize that the periosteum more likely than the bony structure is involved in the responsible trap-door fractures: the thickness and the elasticity of the periosteum leads to reposition the floor or the medial wall of the orbit to its initial position.

A small aneurysmal bone cyst restricted to the cortical bone of the femur resembling so-called subperiosteal giant cell tumor or subperiosteal osteoclasia.

We report a 16-year-old Japanese girl with a cystic lesion restricted to the cortical bone under the periosteum of the diaphysis of the left femur. Roentgenograms showed a long, oval translucent lesion in frontal view and an eccentric erosive lesion in lateral view. Computed tomography showed a distinct intracortical lesion. The lesion, which was excised en bloc, measured 3 x 2 x 2 cm. The outer layer of the cortical bone was eroded eccentrically. From the margin of the eroded bone, thin fragile bony tissue and preserved periosteum extended like the roof of a dome. Multicystic structures, fill…

Marginal mandibulectomy in oral cancer surgery: a 13-year experience.

The management of the mandible when dealing with oral cavity cancer is still controversial. In this article, we present our experience with … afe tissue or to excise tumors of the floor of the mouth with a limited involvement of the alveolar periosteum. Whenever the tumor is close to the mandible or when it adheres to the alveolar periosteum, marginal mandibulectomy offers the possibility to perform an oncologically sound procedure.

[The subperiosteal subtemporal approach in the surgical treatment of craniostenosis. Apropos of 9 cases].

The authors describe the approach consisting of direct subperiosteal, subtemporal cleavage based on existing anatomical continuity between the subtemporal plane and the cranial periosteum in young children. This allows for downward cleavage up to the level of the malar processes, for dissecting both orbits as well as the external columns. Frontoorbital remodeling which is needed for management of craniostenosis may be readily carried out with the improved field of vision. It will suffice, then, to depress the scalp and to suture the skin to obtain perfect repositioning of the temporal muscle, …

Origin and growth of otosclerosis.

CONCLUSION: The external layer of the otic capsule arises from periosteal osteoblasts, which produce large numbers of Volkmann's canals as well as lamellar bone. The main plaque of otosclerosis is a histologic replica of the external layer and seems to arise from similar cells in the periosteum and to follow a defined invasive course into the footplate of the stapes, the basal coil of the cochlea and the saccule. OBJECTIVES: To determine by histologic study of the developing otic capsule and temporal bones with otosclerosis the site, tissue of origin, and pathways of growth of the disease. M…
