Somatic distress among Syrian refugees with residence permission in Germany: analysis of a cross-sectional register-based study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have already proven high rates of common mental disorders in Syrian refugees. Nevertheless, little is known about the patterns of somatic distress among this refugee population. For this reason, we aimed to examine the prevalence, co-occurrence, and risk factors of somatic distress among Syrian refugees in Germany. METHODS: This study analyzes the second measurement point (N = 116) of a prospective register-based survey among 200 adult Syrian refugees with residence permission in Germany. The survey consisted of information on sociodemographic and migration-specif

Characterization of innate immune response to Brucella melitensis infection in goats with permissive or restrictive phenotype for Brucella intramacrophagic growth.

Caprine brucellosis is a chronic, world-wide distributed disease which causes reproductive failure in goats and Brucella melitensis, its causative agent, bears a great zoonotic potential. There is evidence suggesting that some cattle and pigs have an innate ability to resist Brucella infection, but this has not yet been investigated in goats. In this study, we compared caprine macrophages that exhibit extreme restriction and permissiveness to B. melitensis' intracellular growth in vitro. Monocyte derived macrophages (MDMs) from 110 female goats were cultured and challenged in vitro with B. mel…

Central AT1 receptor signaling by circulating angiotensin II is permissive to acute intermittent hypoxia-induced sympathetic neuroplasticity.

Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) triggers sympathetic long-term facilitation (sLTF), a progressive increase in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) linked to central AT1 receptor (AT1R) activation by circulating angiotensin II (ANG II). Here, we investigated AIH activation of the peripheral renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the extent to which the magnitude of RAS activation predicts the magnitude of AIH-induced sLTF. In anesthetized male Sprague-Dawley rats, plasma renin activity (PRA) increased in a linear fashion in response to 5 (P = 0.0342) and 10 (P < 0.0001) cycles of AIH, with PRA remaini

Permissive Hypertension and Collateral Revascularization May Allow Avoidance of Cerebrospinal Fluid Drainage in Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair.

BACKGROUND: The utility of cerebrospinal fluid drainage (CSFD) for prevention of spinal cord ischemia (SCI) after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) remains unclear. We previously published our institutional algorithm restricting preoperative CSFD to patients deemed high risk for SCI. Since that publication, our algorithm has evolved with preoperative CSFD avoided in all patients undergoing isolated descending TEVAR with or without arch involvement (+/- arch TEVAR). This study evaluated the updated algorithm in a contemporary cohort. METHODS: Patients who underwent TEVAR for descendi

Moderately prolonged permissive hypotension results in reversible metabolic perturbation evaluated by intracerebral microdialysis - an experimental animal study.

BACKGROUND: Damage control resuscitation (DCR) and damage control surgery (DCS) is the main strategy in patients with uncontrollable hemorrhagic shock. One aspect of DCR is permissive hypotension. However, the duration of hypotension that can be tolerated without affecting the brain is unknown. In the present study we investigate the effect of 60 min severe hypotension on the brain's energy metabolism and seek to verify earlier findings that venous cerebral blood can be used as a marker of global cerebral energy state. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten pigs were anaesthetized, and vital parameters re

TLR3 deficiency renders astrocytes permissive to herpes simplex virus infection and facilitates establishment of CNS infection in mice.

Herpes simplex viruses (HSVs) are highly prevalent neurotropic viruses. While they can replicate lytically in cells of the epithelial lineage, causing lesions on mucocutaneous surfaces, HSVs also establish latent infections in neurons, which act as reservoirs of virus for subsequent reactivation events. Immunological control of HSV involves activation of innate immune pattern-recognition receptors such as TLR3, which detects double-stranded RNA and induces type I IFN expression. Humans with defects in the TLR3/IFN pathway have an elevated susceptibility to HSV infections of the CNS. However, i

Identification of Icm protein complexes that play distinct roles in the biogenesis of an organelle permissive for Legionella pneumophila intracellular growth.

Legionella pneumophila is a bacterial pathogen that can enter the human lung and grow inside alveolar macrophages. To grow within phagocytic host cells, the bacteria must create a specialized organelle that restricts fusion with lysosomes. Biogenesis of this replicative organelle is controlled by 24 dot and icm genes, which encode a type IV-related transport apparatus. To understand how this transporter functions, isogenic L. pneumophila dot and icm mutants were characterized, and three distinct phenotypic categories were identified. Our data show that, in addition to genes that encode the cor

Synthesis of M protein of HVJ (Sendai virus) in rat glial cells is selectively restricted at a non-permissive temperature.

Production of HVJ (Sendai virus) wild-type in rat glial cells was characteristically restricted at high temperature. The synthesis of the M protein was selectively decreased in infected cells at 39 degrees C. This temperature-sensitive (ts) character of HVJ was not observed in infection of LLCMK2 cells or chick embryo fibroblast cells. Newcastle disease virus, mumps virus and vesicular stomatitis virus did not show ts growth in glial cells.

When Entertainment Normalizes Risk: Affective Engagement with Gambling-Themed Media, Permissive Attitudes, and Casino Visit Intention.

Gambling is an increasingly normalized leisure activity, yet the role of entertainment media in cultivating favorable gambling attitudes remains understudied, with most evidence concerning advertising and youth rather than entertainment portrayals and adults. Drawing on cultivation theory and models of narrative persuasion, this study examined whether affective engagement with gambling-themed film, television, and digital games is associated with permissive gambling attitudes and, in turn, casino visit intention among 517 Korean adults. Affective engagement was strongly associated with permiss

Permissive hypotension in adult trauma: A systematic review of outcomes across clinical settings, injury type, and resuscitation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage is a leading cause of preventable trauma death, and aggressive crystalloid resuscitation may worsen coagulopathy. Permissive hypotension has emerged as a key damage-control strategy. This systematic review aims to evaluate outcomes associated with permissive hypotension in adult trauma patients. METHODS: A systematic review of five databases was conducted from January 1, 2000, to October 18, 2025. Studies assessing hypotensive resuscitation in adult trauma patients based on care setting, injury type, and fluid volume were included. Outcomes of interest included mortalit

Systemic and local chronic inflammation and hormone disposition promote a tumor-permissive environment for breast cancer in older women.

Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer is the most common subtype of breast cancer and is an age-related disease. How systemic and tumor microenvironment hormone signaling intersects with chronic inflammation and how this shapes aging-associated tumor biology remain incompletely understood. Here, using an aged rat model of ER+ tumors, we identify age-associated differences in tumor development and immune features. In parallel, analysis of samples from patients with ER+/HER2- breast cancer and age-matched controls demonstrated estrone-predominant systemic estrogen patterns and increased

"Permission to Come Out of The Dark": A Qualitative Analysis of Male and Female Veterans' Use of a Telehealth Art Therapy Intervention.

Telehealth has expanded access to psychotherapy for veterans, yet little is known about how art therapy is experienced in remote formats. In this paper, we describe a thematic analysis that involved male and female veterans with PTSD and TBI (aside from one participant without a TBI) in individual telehealth art therapy. This paper explores the similarities and differences in male and female veterans' engagement in art therapy. Nine veterans (6 male, 3 female) diagnosed with PTSD (with most also having TBI) participated in eight sessions of individual telehealth art therapy. Clinical notes, se

RANK signaling in osteoclast precursors results in a more permissive epigenetic landscape and sexually divergent patterns of gene expression.

BACKGROUND: Sex is an important risk factor in the development of osteoporosis and other bone loss disorders, with women often demonstrating greater susceptibility than men. While variation in sex steroids, such as estradiol, accounts for much of the risk, there are likely additional non-endocrine factors at transcriptional and epigenetic levels that result in a higher rate of bone loss in women. Identification of these factors could improve risk assessment and therapies to preserve and improve bone health. METHODS: Osteoclast precursors were isolated male and female C57Bl/6 mice and cultured

A Permission to Contact Platform Is an Efficient and Cost-Effective Enrollment Method for a Biobank to Create Study-Specific Research Cohorts.

Background: The permission to contact (PTC) platform is a useful mechanism to increase patient engagement and enrollment into biobanks. It provides biobanks with the ability to select specific patient cohorts and to complete consent to facilitate access to biospecimens and data. In this study, we evaluated consenting costs for a biobank to compile a research cohort based on utilizing a PTC platform to obtain consent as compared with utilizing a prospective consenting approach. Methods: In this study, we utilized a PTC platform to conduct an initial selection of potential participants for two b

Androgen-deprivation induced senescence in prostate cancer cells is permissive for the development of castration-resistance but susceptible to senolytic therapy.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in men. Although androgen deprivation therapies (ADT) and antiandrogens confer increased survival rates, most patients eventually develop castration resistant disease (CRPC). Previous studies have shown that these treatments have limited cytotoxicity, and instead, promote tumor cell growth arrest. We show here that PCa cells grown in either charcoal-stripped serum or exposed to the antiandrogen, bicalutamide, undergo a senescent growth arrest marked by morphological changes, upregulated senescence-associated-β-galactos

An immune-competent, replication-permissive Syrian Hamster glioma model for evaluating Delta-24-RGD oncolytic adenovirus.

BACKGROUND: Oncolytic adenoviruses are promising new treatments against solid tumors, particularly for glioblastoma (GBM), and preclinical models are required to evaluate the mechanisms of efficacy. However, due to the species selectivity of adenovirus, there is currently no single animal model that supports viral replication, tumor oncolysis, and a virus-mediated immune response. To address this gap, we took advantage of the Syrian hamster to develop the first intracranial glioma model that is both adenovirus replication-permissive and immunocompetent. METHODS: We generated hamster glioma st

Sensitization of Non-permissive Laboratory Mice to SARS-CoV-2 with a Replication-Deficient Adenovirus Expressing Human ACE2.

Common laboratory mice such as BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice are not permissive to SARS-CoV2 infection. Sensitization of laboratory mice with Adenovirus expressing human ACE2 (Ad5-hACE2) provides a rapid model for testing viral intervention in vivo. Despite the lack of lethal outcome, Ad5-hACE2-sensitized mice show 20% weight loss on average upon viral challenge with infectious virus being detected at the site of sensitization. This protocol describes the sensitization and subsequent infection of common laboratory mice for use in testing anti-viral interventions. For complete details on the use and
