Adapting new norms: A mixed-method study exploring mental well-being challenges in dental technology education.

BACKGROUND: The present study, grounded in the Stress-Adaptation-Growth theory, aims to explore the mental well-being among dental technology students during the post-pandemic period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed-method approach was employed among undergraduate dental technology students in Malaysia. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was adapted and modified for dental technology students. The content of the questionnaire was validated by two experienced faculty experts. Construct validity and internal consistency were measured. An online survey was created using Google Fo

Navigating fertility, reproduction and modern contraception in the fragile context of South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo: 'Les enfants sont une richesse'.

Modern contraception has created new possibilities for reimagining reproductive norms and has generated new socio-cultural uncertainties in South Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo. Using inductive analysis of women's reproductive narratives, this paper explores how women in a high fertility context encounter and integrate recently introduced family planning and modern contraceptive education and services into their lives. As foundational socio-cultural norms confront the new reproductive possibilities offered by contraception, power dynamics shift and norms are called into question,

[La ciencia de la recuperación de adicciones con sustancia: aplicaciones en Salud Pública].

Intervention about addictive behaviours, especially in substance use, has been advancing from traditional therapeutic communities and drug-free programs to comprehensive care networks and harm reduction programs. Addiction recovery is based on the development of capabilities, skills, and competencies that allow the person who has had an addiction problem to generate an alternative lifestyle to the use of substances (or other addictive behaviours) and not only approach treatment from the presence or absence of the main substance. During the 21st century, the so-called Recovery Science has been

[Probabilistic spatial-temporal prediction of total and severe epidemic of dengue in Colombia].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a new predictive methodology to determine the proportion of severe dengue with respect to the annual total of dengue infections per department based on the probability theory. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on annual data on the number of infected persons by department in the period 2005-2010, the proportion of cases of severe dengue was calculated with respect to the total for each year. Probability spaces were constructed to evaluate these events in the ranges 0.5 and 0.3. Sets of ranges were determined and probability, mean square deviation and the difference between

The systemizing quotient: an investigation of adults with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism, and normal sex differences.

Systemizing is the drive to analyse systems or construct systems. A recent model of psychological sex differences suggests that this is a major dimension in which the sexes differ, with males being more drawn to systemize than females. Currently, there are no self-report measures to assess this important dimension. A second major dimension of sex differences is empathizing (the drive to identify mental states and respond to these with an appropriate emotion). Previous studies find females score higher on empathy measures. We report a new self-report questionnaire, the Systemizing Quotient (SQ)

Prioritization of Psychopathological Symptoms and Clinical Characterization in Psychiatric Diagnoses: A Narrative Review.

IMPORTANCE: Psychiatry mainly deals with conditions that are mediated by brain function but are not directly attributable to specific brain abnormalities. Given the lack of concrete biological markers, such as laboratory tests or imaging results, the development of diagnostic systems is difficult. OBSERVATIONS: This narrative review evaluated 9 diagnostic approaches. The validity of the DSM and the International Classification of Disorders (ICD) is limited. The Research Domain Criteria is a research framework, not a diagnostic system. The clinical utility of the quantitatively derived, dimens

One or Many Recoveries? Recoveries in the Plural for a Better Understanding of One's Healing Journey.

BACKGROUND: Since the 60s, the recovery-oriented approach has greatly influenced mental health policy and practice, and much research has been devoted to exploring it. In the face of a generic definition of the 'recovery' construct, to which many articles refer, a closer examination of the literature reveals a plurality of theories and ways about how changes related to the recovery occur and how to evaluate them. AIMS: This narrative review explores the different definitions of recovery available in the literature, by investigating the adjectives that qualify it and the theoretical construct

Psychological profiles of mindfulness and tourist fatigue: a latent profile analysis in a digital travel context.

The study examined how the different psychological constructs of mindfulness, anxiety, and positive fantasy engagement influence tourist fatigue in digitally mediated tourism experiences. In response to the increasing anxiety regarding cognitive overload in AI-driven travel ecosystems, the study reconceptualizes fatigue as configuration-dependent, but not uniformly experienced. Composite measures of mindfulness (MAAS), anxiety (GAD-7), positive fantasy engagement, and tourist fatigue were determined using survey data of 646 tourists. Latent Profile Analysis was used to identify psychological s

Enhancing person-centered obstetric care: A qualitative grounded theory study on perception formation and sense-making during childbirth.

INTRODUCTION: Quality of obstetric care comprises both provision and experience of care, yet patient experiences have received less attention. Person-centered care seeks to tackle this gap by attributing equal significance to clinical outcomes and care experiences. Individual experiences vary despite similar treatments because subjective appraisals differ. Understanding this process can help to enhance person-centered care in obstetrics. The study's aim is to explore how birthing persons perceive and make sense of obstetric care experiences. METHODS: The qualitative study adopted a grounded t

Analysis of factors alleviating the psychological anxiety of transfer students in postgraduate re-exam based on structural equation model.

BACKGROUND: Intense competition in China's postgraduate admission has resulted in a large number of students participating in the re-examination transfer process. High uncertainty, time pressure, and information asymmetry during transfer are linked to severe psychological anxiety that impairs students' mental health and academic adaptation. Empirical research on the anxiety mechanism and intervention paths for this group remains limited. METHODS: Based on social cognitive theory (SCT), this study constructed a structural equation model (SEM) involving personal factors, external support, self-

Differences in white matter structural networks in family risk of major depressive disorder and suicidality: A connectome analysis.

Depression and suicide are leading global causes of disability and death and are highly familial. Family and individual history of depression and suicide are associated with neurobiological differences including decreased white matter connectivity. However, this has been shown for individual regions, not considering that changes in connectivity may reverberate throughout the brain network. Furthermore, suicide and depression are correlated, but distinct psychological constructs. We use graph theory models to account for the network structure of the brain with high levels of specialization and

Opacity, difference and not knowing: what can psychiatry learn from the work of Édouard Glissant?

Martinican poet, novelist and cultural theorist Édouard Glissant (1928-2011) rejected contemporary simplistic notions of creole hybridity popularised in the 1980s and 1990s in favour of a unique and explicitly antiessentialist construct of Caribbeanness-a form of being that embraces place while shunning any associated ideas of rootednesss. Throughout his work, there is a constant tension between the local and the global, the particular and the universal, the essentialist and the homogenising, a tension that is never resolved but used creatively to stake out an emergent third position against a

Past, Present and Future: A Historical Analysis and Reflection of 100 Years of Nursing Leadership.

This paper critically examines the evolution of nursing leadership over the past century, exploring how changing historical, social and professional contexts have influenced styles and their ongoing relevance to contemporary nursing practice. Using a historical analysis guided by Lewenson and Hermann's framework, primary sources, including archival materials and foundational texts, were examined alongside secondary scholarly literature and historical commentaries. Leadership approaches were reviewed by decade and mapped against key nursing theories, healthcare developments and broader social m

Identity diffusion and psychopathology: comparison between adult psychiatric patients and normals.

OBJECTIVES: This research studied the characteristics of self representations and ego identity in adult psychiatric patients with different mental disorders according to DSM-IV (APA, 1994) and Kernberg's structural criteria for personality organizations (1986). DESIGN AND METHODS: We constructed Identity Diffusion Questionnaire (IDQ), a self-report measure based on Kernberg's criteria for identity diffusion (1986), and Actual Self - Ideal Self - Significant Other Scales (AISS), a measure for discrepancies between perceived actual self, ideal self and significant other. Both measurements reach

Rational decisions or moral obligations? A systematic review of TPB-NAM integration in understanding low-carbon behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding low-carbon behavior remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of environmental decision-making and the persistent intention-behavior gap. While the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Norm Activation Model (NAM) are among the most widely applied frameworks for explaining environmental behavior, studies increasingly integrate these theories to capture both rational and moral dimensions of decision-making. This study systematically reviews TPB-NAM integration research to identify major research trends, theoretical integration approaches, and implications

Worry amplifies theory-of-mind reasoning for negatively valenced social stimuli in generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Theory-of-mind (ToM) is the ability to accurately infer others' thoughts and feelings. In generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), cognitive and emotion regulation theories allude to the plausibility that ToM is conditional on the degree of individuals' state worry, a hallmark symptom. GAD and state worry may interact to predict ToM constructs. However, no experiments have directly tested such interactional hypotheses, and used ToM as a framework to advance understanding of social cognition in GAD. This study therefore aimed to address this gap. METHODS: 171 participants (69 GAD, 102 C

Translation and psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of functional digestive disorders quality of life questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Few useful patient-reported outcomes scales for functional dyspepsia exist in China. AIMS: The purpose of this work was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Functional Digestive Disorders Quality of Life Questionnaire (FDDQL) from the English version to Chinese (in Mandarin). METHODS: The following steps were performed: forward translations, synthesis of the translations, backward translations, pre-testing and field testing of FDDQL. Reliability, validity, responsiveness, confirmatory factor analysis, item response theory and differential item functioning of the scale were

Reduced white matter integrity as a neural correlate of social cognition deficits in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The pathology of schizophrenia is thought to involve multiple gray and white matter regions. A number of studies have revealed impaired social cognition in schizophrenia. Some evidence suggests an association of this social cognition deficit with gray matter reductions in 'social brain' areas. However, no study has yet revealed the association between social cognition abilities and white matter abnormalities in schizophrenia patients. METHODS: Twenty-six schizophrenia patients and 27 healthy controls underwent the Perception of Affect Task (PAT), which consisted of four subtasks m
