A Cross-Sectional Study to Investigate the Prevalence of Self-Medication of Non-Opioid Analgesics Among Medical Students at Qassim University, Saudi Arabia.

PURPOSE: Self-medication (SM) using non-opioid analgesics (NOA) is contentious and increasingly recognized as a major public health concern with severe consequences, including masking of malignant and fatal diseases, risk of misdiagnosis, problems relating to over- and under-dosing, drug interactions, incorrect dosage, and choice of therapy. Herein, we aim to determine the prevalence of SM with NOA among pharmacy and medical students at Unaizah College, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study using a validated self-administered questionnaire was conducte

Opportunistic screening for type 2 diabetes in community pharmacies. Results from a region-wide experience in Italy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Given the paucity of symptoms in the early stages of type 2 diabetes, its diagnosis is often made when complications have already arisen. Although systematic population-based screening is not recommended, there is room to experience new strategies for improving early diagnosis of the disease in high risk subjects. We report the results of an opportunistic screening for diabetes, implemented in the setting of community pharmacies. METHODS AND RESULTS: To identify people at high risk to develop diabetes, pharmacists were trained to administer FINDRISC questionnaire to overw

Impact of pharmacist intervention on completion of recombinant zoster vaccine series in a community pharmacy.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to analyze the impact a pharmacist phone call has played on patients completing the 2-dose shingles vaccine series and to explore the effect that patient cost has on the second dose administration. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study design was used to evaluate whether patients who had a pharmacist phone call intervention were more likely to return for their second recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) dose than patients who did not have a pharmacist phone call intervention. In addition, the impact of immunization cost on series completion was analyz

[Review of pharmaceutical interventions regarding prescriptions for oral anti-rejection drugs: feedback from a university hospital].

OBJECTIVES: Solid organ transplantation is a standard treatment for end-stage organ failure, which improves patient survival. The long-term success of the transplant depends in particular on the use of immunosuppressive treatments known as anti-rejection drugs, the dispensing of which requires rigorous pharmaceutical analysis due to their narrow therapeutic index. The detection of treatment-related issues during analysis leads to the formulation of pharmaceutical interventions. METHODS: This study, conducted as a review of pharmaceutical interventions, aims to describe the types of pharmaceut

Opioid Use Disorder Curricular Content in US-Based Doctor of Pharmacy Programs.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the instructional settings, delivery methods, and assessment methods of opioid use disorder (OUD) content in Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs; assess faculty perceptions of OUD content; and assess faculty perceptions of a shared OUD curriculum. METHODS: This national, cross-sectional, descriptive survey study was designed to characterize OUD content, faculty perceptions, and faculty and institutional demographics. A contact list was developed for accredited, US-based PharmD programs with publicly-accessible online faculty directories (n = 137). Recruitment and

Pharmacotherapy for alcohol dependence: perceived treatment barriers and action strategies among Veterans Health Administration service providers.

Although access to and consideration of pharmacological treatments for alcohol dependence are consensus standards of care, receipt of these medications by patients is generally rare and highly variable across treatment settings. The goal of the present project was to survey and interview the clinicians, managers, and pharmacists affiliated with addiction treatment programs within Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities to learn about their perceptions of barriers and facilitators regarding greater and more reliable consideration of pharmacological treatments for alcohol dependence. Intravenous antibiotic therapy in an outpatient setting.

A program has been developed for the outpatient administration of parenteral antibiotics. To date, more than 150 patients with osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, pyelonephritis, endocarditis, and other infections have been treated. Antibiotic solutions were prepared in the hospital pharmacy and given to the patient to be kept refrigerated at home until used. Patients administered their own antibiotics by means of a heparin lock, which was replaced every four days or when necessary. Complications were infrequent. Many patients were able to return to work while receiving therapy; others enjoyed th

OBJECTIVE: To identify facilitators and barriers to prescribing subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) for user administration. METHODS: This mixed-methods study comprised surveys (N=422) and interviews (N=34) with family planning experts, defined as health care professionals who see at least three contraceptive visits a month, regarding their awareness, knowledge, and practice of prescribing subcutaneous DMPA for user administration. RESULTS: We found that 74.5% of professionals reported awareness of subcutaneous DMPA for user administration, but only 34.8% actively prescribe

Influence of the mode of administration on the results of medication adherence questionnaires.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Adherence to medication regimen is commonly assessed through questionnaires, some of which are validated via self-administration. The inadequate health literacy of elderly people pushes researchers to the use of interviews as a method of administration. The aims of this study were to compare the results obtained with an interviewer-administered and a self-administered medication adherence questionnaire and to evaluate the consequences of the adherence status classification of individuals. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in which the Medida de Adesão
