Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient which often limits plant growth, but the phosphate rock used for fertilizer production is a finite resource. On the other hand, large amounts of P compounds are entering surface waters, leading to eutrophication. Therefore, improvement of phosphate use efficiency of crop plants is a major task for plant science. Rice as a staple crop has recently been a focus of such efforts with several major discoveries. New transporters controlling phosphate homeostasis in rice have been discovered. Manipulation of expression of the corresponding genes improves d…

There is a great heterogeneity in the distribution of mobile phosphorus (P) in natural sediments, while the assessment of P immobilization by amendment agents has mostly neglected this feature. In this study, the effects of aluminum sulfate (ALS) on P immobilization were investigated via a 60-day microcosm experiment using sampled sediment cores. The high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) techniques were first employed to establish the profiles of soluble reactive P (SRP) and DGT-labile P in aluminum-amended sediments at 2 and 1 mm resolutions, respect…

Phosphorus is one of the elements that have a significant impact on such environmental problems as eutrophication or algal bloom. Phosphorus compounds in water can be hydrolyzed to orthophosphate that is the only form of phosphorus that algae can assimilate. In this study, phosphorus removal in terms of orthophosphate and total phosphorus from wastewater was studied using alum or ferric ions as coagulants. It was observed that alum shows higher phosphorus removal efficiency than ferric ions in the same mole ratio concentrations. The proportion of orthophosphate among total phosphorus did not c…

Elevated serum phosphorus levels are common in patients with chronic kidney disease and are associated with heart and vascular disease, conditions that in turn are associated with increased mortality. Accurately managing phosphorus intake by restricting dietary protein alone can prove challenging because protein from different sources can contain varying amounts of available phosphorus. Additives used in processed foods frequently are high in inorganic phosphorus, which is readily absorbed, compounding this difficulty. Recent evidence suggests that dietary protein restriction in some cases may…

Septic tanks with subsequent soil treatment systems (STS) are a common treatment technique for domestic wastewater in rural areas. Phosphorus (P) leakage from such systems may pose a risk to water quality (especially if they are located relatively close to surface waters). In this study, six STS in Sweden (11-28 years old) were examined. Samples taken from the unsaturated subsoil beneath the distribution pipes were investigated by means of batch and column experiments, and accumulated phosphorus were characterized through X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis. At all sites the …

P loss during the fresh urine storage process is inevitable because of the presence of Ca and Mg. Dilution is one of the most important parameters influencing urine composition and subsequent P recovery. This study aimed to investigate the fate of P in urine with different dilution ratios (Vwater/Vurine, i.e., 0/100, 25/75, 50/50 and 75/25). The results indicate that the percentage of P loss increased from 43% to 76% as the dilution ratio increased from 0/100 to 75/25 because of more Ca and Mg obtained from tap water. Meanwhile, P removal efficiency through struvite precipitation decreased fro

There are many types of dendrimers used as nanomolecules for gene delivery but there is still an ongoing search for ones that are able to effectively deliver drugs to cells. The possibility of gene silencing using siRNA gives hope for effective treatment of numerous diseases. The aim of this work was to investigate in vitro biophysical properties of dendriplexes formed by siRNA and cationic phosphorus dendrimers of 3rd and 4th generation. First, using the ethidium bromide intercalation method, it was examined whether dendrimers have an ability to form complexes with siRNA. Next, the characteri…

Struvite (MgNH(4)PO(4)·6H(2)O; MAP) precipitation is a viable means of phosphorus (P) recovery from animal and human wastes. The behavior of metal contaminants such as chromium (Cr) during struvite precipitation, however, requires consideration. Here the influence of both Cr concentration and oxidation state on sorption is assessed. The Cr content of struvite precipitated in the presence of 1-100 μM Cr as Cr(III) (22.3-3030.1 mg/kg) was higher than that of solids from Cr(VI) (4.5-5.1 mg/kg) solutions. For 1-20 μM Cr(III) solids, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed etch pit formation on…

In uremic patients, hyperphosphatemia is associated with cardiovascular calcification and increased cardiovascular mortality. Despite the use of phosphate binders and dietary phosphate limitation in addition to dialysis, only 50% of dialysis patients achieve recommended serum phosphate levels. The identification of other approaches for serum phosphorus reduction is therefore necessary. We have approached this issue by taking into account the relationships between serum phosphate, kidney function, and saliva. Saliva was chosen because the anatomy and/or physiology of acini, the secretive units …

The objective of the investigations of the Jadro River, located in Croatia, was to estimate the nitrogen and phosphorus loads in the Jadro River spring and its streamflow by calculating the load in kg/day or tons/year and to compare this with the load for the maximum allowed concentrations (MAC) for drinking water (Official Bulletin, No 46/94) expressed in kg/day or tons/year. Daily pollution loads at the Jadro River spring for total N ranged from 0 to 304 kg, for NH3-N from 0 to 38 kg, for NO3-N from 0-1321 kg and for PO4-P from 0-92 kg in the period from September 1993 to September 2003. Whe…

The homeostasis of inorganic phosphate (P(i)) is regulated by parathyroid hormone (PTH), 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)(2)D), and P(i)itself in the intestine, kidney, and bone in all the mammalian species studied. Determinations of the serum concentrations of PTH, 1,25(OH)(2)D and osteocalcin were done in 82 southern Romanian Landrace pigs originating from three herds with dietary P(i)deficiency. Serum P(i)concentrations were negatively correlated with those of 1,25(OH)(2)D. In lactating animals and sucklings, the linear relationships between P(i)and 1,25(OH)(2)D were not present. Serum P(i

In food animal practice, the majority of the calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium balance disorders are due to low blood concentrations of one or more of these minerals. The purpose of this article is to review methods that can be used to restore normal blood concentrations of these minerals. Low plasma calcium is often accompanied by changes in plasma phosphorus and magnesium. Initial discussions will consider each mineral separately, followed by pros and cons of combined therapies. In all cases the doses of the treatments described in this article are those appropriate for the 600-kg cow.

The goal of this article is to summarize key features of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium pathophysiology and highlight some of the recent scientific accomplishments in these fields. The area of calcium physiology has been especially active due to the discovery of a new calcium-regulating hormone, parathyroid hormone-related protein, cloning of the parathyroid hormone receptor and identification of a cell membrane receptor for ionized calcium. Advances have also been made in understanding the role of phosphorus and the active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in the pathogenesis of …

This paper is an introduction to the clinical part of the symposium and deals with the question of whether and under which circumstances the calcium and phosphorus content in baby formula can provoke pathological conditions. In a healthy baby, high or low mineral intake is efficiently compensated for by Ca-P homeostasis. Both nutritional calcium deficiency and calcium excess are the exception with modern baby feeding practices. However, P-deficiency states resulting in phosphopenic rickets might occur in premature babies and in children with familial hypophosphatemic rickets. These two conditi…

Appropriate intake of dietary calcium and phosphorus is essential for the maintenance of mineral homeostasis and support of adequate bone mineralization in growing infants. Disturbances of calcium homeostasis such as newborn hypocalcemia, have been shown to be secondary to high oral phosphate intake. The incidence of hypocalcemic tetany has changed from epidemic proportions in newborns, who were formerly fed evaporated cow's milk formula, to the present sporadic occurrence in newborns who are now fed humanized cow's milk formula, with a calcium concentration of about 50 mg/dl and a phosphorus …

A 16-year-old boy with myopathy, ophthalmoplegia, and raised basal metabolic rate was examined by the non-invasive technique of phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (31 P NMR). The muscles of the forearm showed an abnormal 31P NMR spectrum with a high inorganic phosphate (Pi) content in relation to phosphocreatine (PCr) (PCr/Pi = 4; control = 10). This finding was compatible with the abnormality of mitochondrial function already established by biopsy and offers in addition an explanation for the raised oxygen consumption in this patient. The method of 31P NMR is suited to rapid non-invasiv…

A solid sorbent sampling tube packed with Tenax-GC is used with a personal sampling pump to collect samples of white (yellow) phosphorus vapor from air. The phosphorus is leached from the exposed sorbent into xylene and quantitated by gas chromatographic analysis. The capacity of the sorbents is in the range 10 to 20 microgramP4per100 mg of sorbent, which allows for up to 4 hrs of sampling at the OSHA Standard, 0.1 mg/m3. No interferences from red phosphorus, phosphine, water vapor, or other common gases are significant. The effects on the method of variations in temperature, pressure, humidit…
