A shared code for perceiving and imagining objects in human ventral temporal cortex.

Mental imagery allows us to remember previous experiences and imagine new ones. Animal studies have yielded rich insight into mechanisms for visual perception, but the neural mechanisms for visual imagery remain poorly understood. We determined that approximately 80% of visually responsive single neurons in the human ventral temporal cortex (VTC) use a distributed axis code to represent objects. We used that code to reconstruct objects and generate maximally effective synthetic stimuli. We then recorded responses from the same neural population while subjects imagined specific objects; about 4

Hoverfly responses to looming stimuli depend on elevation and speed.

An object on immediate collision course generates a rapidly expanding visual stimulus on the retina, which will typically trigger a fast reaction, such as an evasive behaviour. In hoverflies, for example, visual looming stimuli may be generated if the insect is about to collide with a stationary object in the surround, by an approaching predator, or by conspecifics during territorial interactions. Supporting these behavioural responses is a diverse range of looming-sensitive descending neurons that project information from the optic lobes and central brain to the motor control centres in the t

Unique neural activity states predict action selection in response to visual threat.

To survive, animals must select contextually appropriate behavioral responses to threatening sensory stimuli. However, how the circuits that process specific sensory stimuli might disseminate information to, and be affected by, other brain regions whose activities reflect these states is incompletely understood. We examined the response of fruit flies to a looming visual object, a well-studied model of visual threat. Prior work has characterized how such stimuli can activate specific neural circuits to evoke distinct behavioral responses. However, how looming stimuli might alter neural activit

Non-uniform signal pooling across the foveola.

Object recognition is impacted by visual crowding. This phenomenon, attributed to cortical pooling, is generally studied in the periphery. Crowding mechanisms in the foveola-the 1° retinal region with highest resolution-remain unclear due to difficulties in controlling for optical factors and incessant fixational eye motion. Using high-resolution retinal imaging and retinal-contingent stimulus rendering to overcome these limitations, we demonstrated that the critical spacing at the preferred retinal locus approximates a single cone's diameter. However, just 0.25° away, mislocalization errors s

Background optic flow modulates responses of multiple descending interneurons to object motion in locusts.

Animals flying within natural environments are constantly challenged with complex visual information. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the impact of the visual background on the motion detection system. Locusts possess a well-identified looming detection pathway, comprising the lobula giant movement detector (LGMD) and the descending contralateral movement detector (DCMD). The LGMD/DCMD pathway responds preferably to objects on a collision course, and the response of this pathway is affected by the background complexity. However, multiple other neurons are also responsive to looming st

Detection and identification of monocular, binocular, and dichoptic stimuli are mediated by binocular sum and difference channels.

How are signals from the two eyes combined? We asked whether the mechanisms that limit detectability of simple binocular and dichoptic stimuli also set the limits for their identification. For example, at low contrasts, can we (a) identify monocular versus binocular stimulation and/or (b) identify stimuli that are the same in both eyes (e.g., both light discs or both dark) versus stimuli with opposite polarity (light disc in one eye, dark disc in the other). For the same- versus opposite-polarity tasks, mean proportions of correct trials for detection and for identification were almost identic

Activity in the human superior colliculus associated with reaching for tactile targets.

The superior colliculus (SC) plays a major role in orienting movements of eyes and the head and in the allocation of attention. Functions of the SC have been mostly investigated in animal models, including non-human primates. Differences in the SC's anatomy and function between different species question extrapolations of these studies to humans without further validation. Few electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies in animal models and humans have reported a role of the SC in visually guided reaching movements. Using BOLD fMRI imaging, we sought to decipher if the SC is also active duri

EEG measurement for the effect of perceptual eye position and eye position training on comitant strabismus.

One of the clinical features of comitant strabismus is that the deviation angles in the first and second eye positions are equal. However, there has been no report of consistency in the electroencephalography (EEG) signals between the 2 positions. In order to address this issue, we developed a new paradigm based on perceptual eye position. We collected steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) signals and resting-state EEG data before and after the eye position training. We found that SSVEP signals could characterize the suppression effect and eye position effect of comitant strabismus, t

State-dependent alterations of implicit emotional dominance during binocular rivalry in subthreshold depression.

Binocular rivalry, a visual perception phenomenon where two or more percepts alternate every few seconds when distinct stimuli are presented to the two eyes, has been reported as a biomarker in several psychiatric disorders. It is unclear whether abnormalities of binocular rivalry in depression could occur when emotional rivaling stimuli are used, and if so, whether an emotional binocular rivalry test could provide a trait-dependent or state-dependent biomarker. In the current study, 34 individuals with subthreshold depression and 31 non-depressed individuals performed a binocular rivalry task

Distinct saccade planning and endogenous visuospatial attention maps in parietal cortex: A basis for functional differences in sensory and motor attention.

Parietal cortex activity contributes to higher-level cognitive processes, including endogenous visual attention and saccade planning. While visual attention is the process of selecting pertinent information from the environment, saccade planning may involve motor attention in the planning of a specific movement, including the process of selecting the correct path. We isolated areas in parietal cortex involved in saccade planning, while controlling visual attention, to understand the relationship between the two processes. Using our novel stimulus, participants performed a delayed saccade task

Perceptual learning improves visual functions in patients with albinistic bilateral amblyopia: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Several visual functions are impaired in patients with oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) associated to albinistic bilateral amblyopia (ABA). OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed at exploring whether perceptual learning (PL) can improve visual functions in albinism. METHOD: Six patients and six normal sighted controls, were trained in a contrast detection task with lateral masking. Participants were asked to choose which of the two intervals contained a foveally presented low-contrast Gabor patch. Targets were presented between higher contrast collinear flankers with equal spatial frequ

Contributions of diagnostic, cognitive, and somatovisceral information to the prediction of fear ratings in spider phobic and non-spider-fearful individuals.

BACKGROUND: Physiological responding is a key characteristic of fear responses. Yet, it is unknown whether the time-consuming measurement of somatovisceral responses ameliorates the prediction of individual fear responses beyond the accuracy reached by the consideration of diagnostic (e.g., phobic vs. non phobic) and cognitive (e.g., risk estimation) factors, which can be more easily assessed. METHOD: We applied a machine learning approach to data of an experiment, in which spider phobic and non-spider fearful participants (diagnostic factor) faced pictures of spiders. For each experimental t

What cortical areas are responsible for blindsight in hemianopic patients?

The presence of above-chance unconscious behavioral responses following stimulus presentation to the blind hemifield of hemianopic patients (blindsight) is a well-known phenomenon. What is still lacking is a systematic study of the neuroanatomical bases of two distinct aspects of blindsight: the unconscious above chance performance and the phenomenological aspects that may be associated. Here, we tested 17 hemianopic patients in two tasks i.e. movement and orientation discrimination of a visual grating presented to the sighted or blind hemifield. We classified patients in four groups on the ba

Aberrant Cortical Ensembles and Schizophrenia-like Sensory Phenotypes in Setd1a+/- Mice.

BACKGROUND: A breakdown of synchrony within neuronal ensembles leading to destabilization of network "attractors" could be a defining aspect of neuropsychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, representing a common downstream convergence point for the diverse etiological pathways associated with the disease. Using a mouse genetic model, we demonstrated that altered ensembles are associated with pathological sensory cortical processing phenotypes resulting from loss of function mutations in the Setd1a gene, a recently identified rare risk genotype with very high penetrance for schizophrenia. Network changes in patients with phobic postural vertigo.

INTRODUCTION: Functional dizziness comprises a class of dizziness disorders, including phobic postural vertigo (PPV), that cause vestibular symptoms in the absence of a structural organic origin. For this reason, functional brain mechanisms have been implicated in these disorders. METHODS: Here, functional network organization was investigated in 17 PPV patients and 18 healthy controls (HCs) during functional magnetic resonance imaging with a visual motion stimulus, data initially collected and described by Popp et al. (2018). Graph theoretical measures (degree centrality [DC], clustering coe

Distractor-induced deafness: The effect of multiple auditory distractors on conscious target processing.

Conscious access to a target stimulus embedded in a rapid serial visual presentation can be impaired by the preceding presentation of multiple task-irrelevant distractors. While this phenomenon - labeled distractor-induced blindness (DIB) - is established in vision, it is unknown whether a similar effect can be observed in the auditory modality. Considering the differences in the processing of visual and auditory stimuli, modality-specific effects in the inhibitory mechanisms triggered by distractors can be expected. First, we aimed to find evidence for a distractor-induced deafness (DID) for

Mobile steady-state evoked potential recording: Dissociable neural effects of real-world navigation and visual stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The ability to record brain activity in humans during movement, and in real world environments, is an important step towards understanding cognition. Electroencephalography (EEG) is well suited to mobile applications but suffers from the problem of artefacts introduced into the signal during movement. Steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) give an excellent signal-to-noise ratio and averaging a sufficient number of trials will eventually remove any noise not phase locked to the visual flicker. NEW METHOD: Here we present a method for producing SSVEPs of real world enviro

Dyslexie font does not benefit reading in children with or without dyslexia.

In two experiments, the claim was tested that the font "Dyslexie", specifically designed for people with dyslexia, eases reading performance of children with (and without) dyslexia. Three questions were investigated. (1) Does the Dyslexie font lead to faster and/or more accurate reading? (2) Do children have a preference for the Dyslexie font? And, (3) is font preference related to reading performance? In Experiment 1, children with dyslexia (n = 170) did not read text written in Dyslexie font faster or more accurately than in Arial font. The majority preferred reading in Arial and preference

Multiple-stage ambiguity in motion perception reveals global computation of local motion directions.

The motion of a 1D image feature, such as a line, seen through a small aperture, or the small receptive field of a neural motion sensor, is underconstrained, and it is not possible to derive the true motion direction from a single local measurement. This is referred to as the aperture problem. How the visual system solves the aperture problem is a fundamental question in visual motion research. In the estimation of motion vectors through integration of ambiguous local motion measurements at different positions, conventional theories assume that the object motion is a rigid translation, with mo

The pupillary light response reveals the focus of covert visual attention.

The pupillary light response is often assumed to be a reflex that is not susceptible to cognitive influences. In line with recent converging evidence, we show that this reflexive view is incomplete, and that the pupillary light response is modulated by covert visual attention: Covertly attending to a bright area causes a pupillary constriction, relative to attending to a dark area under identical visual input. This attention-related modulation of the pupillary light response predicts cuing effects in behavior, and can be used as an index of how strongly participants attend to a particular loca
