Photoperiod effects on corticosterone and seasonal clocks in cafeteria-induced obese fischer 344 rats are influenced by gut microbiota.

Seasonal rhythms are gaining attention given their impact on metabolic disorders development such as obesity gut microbiota is emerging as a … ry gland and colon. Fischer 344 male rats fed with cafeteria diet (CAF) were housed under different photoperiods for 9 weeks and treated with an antibiotic cocktail (ABX) in drinking water during the last 4 weeks. Rats fed with standard chow and CAF-fed rats without ABX were included as controls. ABX altered gut microbiota, corticosterone levels and seasonal …

Early-life Photoperiod Influences Depression-like Behavior, Prepulse Inhibition of the Acoustic Startle Response, and Hippocampal Astrogenesis in Mice.

Environmental factors during early life stages affect behavioral and physiological phenotypes in adulthood. We examined the effect of photoperiods during development on neurogenesis and affective behaviors during adolescence/adulthood using C57BL/6J mice. Mice were born and raised until weaning under long-day conditions (LDs) or short-day conditions (SDs), followed by a 12L12D cycle until adulthood. Adult mice born under SD showed a shorter latency to first immobility in the forced swim test when compared with the mice born under LD. The mice born under SD also exhibited significantly lower pr…

Effect of photoperiod on endocrine profiles and vitellogenin expression in European eels Anguilla anguilla during artificially induced ovarian development.

The aim of this work was to determine the effects of dark and light conditions on the E2, testosterone and thyroid hormones levels and on the gene expression levels (vitellogenin 1, vitellogenin 2, and estradiol receptor one) in European eels (Anguilla anguilla) during ovarian development induced by increasing doses of carp pituitary extracts (CPEs). The subjects were divided into 2 groups: 14-hour light:10-hour dark (Light Group) and 24-hour darkness (Dark Group). All the eels received intramuscular injections with CPE at a dosage of 10 mg/kg body weight (BW) once a week for the first 3 weeks

Photoperiod and reproductive condition are associated with changes in RFamide-related peptide (RFRP) expression in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

To conserve scarce energetic resources during winter, seasonal breeders inhibit reproduction and other nonessential behavioral and physiolog … e function in Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), although the specific-cell phenotype decoding photoperiodic information remains unknown. RFamide-related peptide (RFRP; the mammalian homolog of the gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) gene identified in birds) has emerged as a potent inhibitory regulator of the reproductive axis and, significantly, its …

Effect of photoperiod on the fish innate immune system: a link between fish pineal gland and the immune system.

The pineal gland via its secretory product, melatonin, influences the light-dark rhythm in most vertebrates including fish. Apart from the information concerning this circadian rhythm, the interrelation of the melatonin with other physiological processes has not been considered in fish. Thus, we evaluated the changes in the humoral innate immune system of seabream (Sparus aurata L.) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) specimens exposed to a constant light-dark photoperiod (12 hr L:12 hr D). Serum was obtained from blood samples collected at 02:00, 08:00 hr (light-on), 14:00, 20:00 hr (light…

Delayed puberty in the male Djungarian hamster: effect of short photoperiod or melatonin treatment on the GnRH neuronal system.

The effect of short days or timed melatonin treatments on the number and neuroanatomical location of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons was studied in the brain of the pubertal male Djungarian hamster. At the beginning of the rapid phase of testicular growth and onset of peak gonadotropin secretion (15 days of age), males were treated for 10 days with either short days (10 L:14 D; n = 6), or remained in long days (16 L:8 D; n = 5) and injected each afternoon with melatonin. These treatments arrested testicular growth compared to the gonadal development that occurred in long-day cont

The Effects of Photoperiodic Transcription Factor OsPRR37 on Grain Filling and Starch Synthesis During Rice Caryopsis Development.

Grain filling governs grain weight formation in rice, while starch biosynthesis during this process critically determines both grain quality and yield. In this study, we characterized the heading date regulator OsPRR37 on regulating grain development, starch metabolism, and starch physicochemical properties. The osprr37 mutants exhibited undesirable agronomic traits, including reduced plant height, decreased grain thickness, lower 1000-grain weight, and diminished yield. Moreover, mutant endosperm displayed irregular starch packing, aberrant granules morphology, and decreased granule diameter.

Decoding the effect of photoperiodic cues in transducing kisspeptin-melatonin circuit during the pubertal onset in common carp.

This study unravels the intricate interplay between photoperiod, melatonin, and kisspeptin to orchestrate the pubertal onset of Common carp. Female fingerlings exposed to long days (LD) exhibited a hormonal crescendo, with upregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis genes (kiss1, kiss1r, kiss2, gnrh2, gnrh3) and their downstream targets (lhr, fshr, ar1, esr1). However, the expression of the melatonin receptor (mtnr1a) diminished in LD, suggesting a potential inhibitory role. This hormonal symphony was further amplified by increased activity of key transcriptional regulators (gata1, g…

The Effects of Chronic Variable Stress and Photoperiod Alteration on the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Response and Behavior of Mice.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis mediates the physiological response to stressors and also synchronizes different physiological systems to environmental cues. Changes in day length (i.e., photoperiod) as well as chronic exposure to stressors are known to impact the HPA axis activity regulating the levels of glucocorticoid hormones. Over-exposure to inappropriate levels of glucocorticoids has been implicated in increased disease risk. In the present study, we examined the impact of chronic stress, using a chronic variable stress (CVS) paradigm, in combination with changes in photop…

Pinealectomy and gonadectomy modulate amplitude, but not photoperiodic modulation of Clock gene expression in the Syrian hamster suprachiasmatic nuclei.

The duration of daytime light phase (photoperiod) controls reproduction in seasonal mammals. Syrian hamsters are sexually active when exposed to long photoperiod, while gonadal atrophy is observed after exposure to short photoperiod. The photorefractory period, or photorefractoriness, is a particular state of spontaneous recrudescence of sexual activity that occurs after a long-term exposure to short photoperiod. Expression of core clock genes in the master circadian clock contained in the suprachiasmatic nuclei depends on photoperiodic conditions. Interestingly, the expression of the Clock ge…

Development of vernal migration in redheaded buntings: concurrent behavioral, physiological and neural changes under stimulatory photoperiods.

We investigated changes in behavior, physiology and selected brain regions during the development of vernal migration and reproduction phenotypes in migratory redheaded buntings. We monitored 24 h activity-rest pattern and measured food intake, fat deposition, and body mass of buntings exposed for 12 weeks to short (SP, 8L : 16D) and long (LP, 13L : 11D) photoperiods at 22 ± 2 °C temperature. Under LP, not SP, buntings exhibited a photostimulated spring migration phenotype (hyperphagia, fat deposition and body mass gain). However, there were sex differences in the development of vernal migrati…

Does melatonin act on dopaminergic pathways in the mediobasal hypothalamus to mediate effects of photoperiod on prolactin secretion in the ram?

Previous studies have shown that the chronic administration of melatonin in the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) using micro-implants in Soay rams housed under long days causes a sustained decrease in the secretion of prolactin as occurs in response to short days. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether hypothalamic dopaminergic (DA) systems acting through D2 receptors may be involved in this melatonin-induced effect. Groups of Soay rams living under long days were treated in the MBH with micro-implants containing bromocriptine (BROM, DA D2 receptor agonist), or sulpiride (SULP, DA D

Modulation of serotonin binding sites in the brain of the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus, during adaptation to a short photoperiod.

During the physiological adaptation of the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus, to a short photoperiod in autumn the modulation of specific serotonin (5-HT) binding sites of synaptic membranes was investigated in two brain regions, i.e. cerebral cortex and basal brain (CNS without cerebral cortex, cerebellum, pineal gland, and spinal cord). The radioligands [3H]5-HT and [3H]ketanserin were used to characterize total 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 binding sites, respectively. An increase of 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 binding sites was observed in both brain regions within 14 days after reduction of the photoperiod fro…

Pattern of pineal melatonin concentrations during prolonged exposure to short photoperiods in photosensitive and photoinsensitive Djungarian hamsters.

In the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus) there is strong evidence that the nightly decompression or lengthening, respectively, of the pineal melatonin pattern is involved in conveying the inhibitory influence of short photoperiods. Some hamsters, however, are insensitive to photoinhibitory influences; other late-responding hamsters show a delayed reaction of several months. The daily pattern of pineal melatonin proves that the mechanisms determining long- or short-day patterns become effective in the morning and evening hours when melatonin concentrations of photoinhibited hamsters are cl…

Circadian rhythms of plasma melatonin in the Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) in constant dim light and artificial photoperiods.

The response of plasma melatonin in Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) to constant dim light and to light/dark cycles was measured to determine the capacity of the pineal gland to secrete melatonin after exposure to continuous daylight for 2 months. Penguins were moved in mid-summer from the natural photoperiod to either constant dim light (n = 10), to a 12L:12D light/dark cycle (n = 5), or to a 12L:12D light/dark cycle with a 30 min light pulse (50-155 lux) on the third (n = 4) or sixth (n = 5) "night." Blood samples were collected regularly through cannulae for up to 33 h. The birds in dim…

The influence of multiple photoperiods and pinealectomy on gonads, pelage and body weight in male meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus.

1. Chronic exposure of male Microtus pennsylvanicus to photoperiods with 8, 10 and 12 hr of light per day results in gonadal regression, molt to winter pelage and significant reductions in body weight and food consumption relative to voles kept on photoperiods with 13 and 14 hr of light per day. 2. A precise critical daylength is observed in this species as exposure to photoperiods with 12 or fewer hours of light per day results in complete gonadal involution, seasonal molt and loss of body weight. 3. Pinealectomy abolishes all short-photoperiod induced responses in this species.
