Comparison of left and right ventricular adaptation in endurance-trained male athletes.

Characteristics of the athlete's heart have been investigated mostly in the left ventricle (LV); reports referring to the right ventricle (RV) have only appeared recently. The aim of the present study was to compare the training effects on RV and LV in elite male endurance athletes. To this end, echocardiography was conducted in 52 elite endurance athletes (A) and in 25 non-athletes (NA). Differences between A and NA in the morphology was more marked in the RV (body-size-matched (rel.)) long axis diastolic diameter (RVLADd): 63.4 ± 6.3 vs. 56.4 ± 6.3; rel. short axis diastolic diameter (RVSADd

Surfactant properties of human meibomian lipids.

PURPOSE: Human meibomian lipids are the major part of the lipid layer of the tear film. Their surfactant properties enable their spread across the aqueous layer and help maintain a stable tear film. The purpose of this study was to investigate surfactant properties of human meibomian lipids in vitro and to determine effects of different physical conditions such as temperature and increased osmolarity, such as occur in dry eye, on these properties. METHODS: Human meibomian lipids were spread on an artificial tear solution in a Langmuir trough. The lipid films were compressed and expanded to re

Physical stress in the middle of the dark phase does not affect light-depressed plasma melatonin levels in humans.

The human pineal gland has been shown to be unresponsive to stress-induced sympathetic activation during the day. However, the effects of stress on human melatonin production have received little investigation at night, when the pinealocytes should be physiologically responsive to noradrenergic stimulation. For this purpose, plasma melatonin and cortisol levels were measured in 7 healthy men (aged 25-34 years), both in resting condition and before and after a physical exercise performed between 23.40 and 24.00 h, 30 min after exposure to bright light (2,500 lx). The exercise consisted in bicyc

Influence of physical characteristics, sport-specific factors, and training participation on mental fatigue in elite Australian Rules Football athletes.

This study aimed to monitor subjective mental fatigue (MF) during pre-season in elite male Australian rules football (ARF) athletes and identify factors associated with MF. Thirty-nine elite male ARF athletes (24.6 ± 4.5 y) rated their MF on a visual analogue scale on each training day of a 13-week pre-season (n = 1353 samples, 48 training days). Strength, running measures, sport-specific factors (age, mass, games played, playing years, contract status) and training participation were recorded. Linear models were used to determine the effects between factors and MF. Elevated MF was observed in

Exploring cutting-edge methods in basketball referee development.

This research delves into the efficacy of targeted training methodologies implemented for basketball referees, with a keen focus on pivotal variables: a) duration of maintained running pace during the Course Navette test; b) maximum heart rate during the test; c) mean heart rate during the test; d) maximum oxygen consumption. The study objectives entail scrutinizing disparities in these variables pre and post-intervention, juxtaposing outcomes across experimental group 1, experimental group 2, and the control group, and examining the distinct influence of training frequency. Notably, it delves

NCAA Football Off-Season Training: Unanswered Prayers… A Prayer Answered.

Off-season training in year-round collegiate football is purported to be performance enhancing. Absent principles of exercise physiology, excesses in sport-training regimens pose risk to the participant athletes. Since 2000, 33 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football players have died in sport: 27 nontraumatic deaths and 6 traumatic deaths, a ratio of 4.5 nontraumatic deaths for every traumatic death. On average, 2 NCAA football players die per season. Best practices, consensus guidelines, and precautions are ignored, elevating the risk. However, standards exist that will, if

Clay-Shoveler Fracture in a Paddler: A Case Report.

Clay-shoveler fracture is a fracture of the spinous process of lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae. It has only rarely been reported as being caused by an overuse sports injury. This case report describes the first reported clay-shoveler fracture in a paddler. A 51-year-old male paddler, preparing for a paddling adventure over 630 km, felt a click and a sharp pain paravertebrally on the level of the upper thoracic vertebrae while paddling. Sonar investigation did not reveal any muscular injury but computed tomography revealed a fracture of the spinous process of T1. In this case, it is
