Cost-Reducing Traits for Agonistic Head Collisions: A Case for Neurophysiology.

Many animal species have evolved extreme behaviors requiring them to engage in repeated high-impact collisions. These behaviors include mating displays like headbutting in sheep and drumming in woodpeckers. To our knowledge, these taxa do not experience any notable acute head trauma, even though the deceleration forces would cause traumatic brain injury in most animals. Previous research has focused on skeletomuscular morphology, biomechanics, and material properties in an attempt to explain how animals moderate these high-impact forces. However, many of these behaviors are understudied, and m

Evolution of water conservation in humans.

To sustain life, humans and other terrestrial animals must maintain a tight balance of water gain and water loss each day.1-3 However, the evolution of human water balance physiology is poorly understood due to the absence of comparative measures from other hominoids. While humans drink daily to maintain water balance, rainforest-living great apes typically obtain adequate water from their food and can go days or weeks without drinking4-6. Here, we compare isotope-depletion measures of water turnover (L/d) in zoo- and rainforest-sanctuary-housed apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangu

Adapting Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy to Where Patients Live: A Comparative Case Study.

Objectives Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has been demonstrated to effectively reverse the abnormal physiology of sleep apnea and improve a variety of patient outcomes, yet helping patients adapt and adhere to CPAP has proven to be a challenging issue in the effective treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). As a home-based intervention trial, the "Sleep Apnea in Transient Ischemic Attack and Stroke: Reducing Cardiovascular Risk with Positive Airway Pressure" ("sleep tight") study was uniquely positioned to capture and evaluate challenges faced by patients over time duri

In vivo electrophysiology in head-fixed and freely moving mole-rats.

Mole-rats are subterranean rodents with sensory and physiological adaptations to life in underground tunnels, yet their neurobiology remains largely unexplored. We present methods for in vivo electrophysiological recordings in awake, head-fixed, and freely moving African mole-rats (Fukomys anselli and Fukomys micklemi), addressing their unique anatomy and physiology. We report anesthesia, analgesia, and surgical procedures and find that elevated carbon dioxide concentrations are beneficial for recovery, likely due to a mutation in the potassium-chloride symporter KCC2. We also present a stereo

Massive Ovulation in Mammals: Techniques for Analyzing Natural Spontaneous Polyovulation and Induced Polyovulation in Lagostomus maximus.

The South American plains vizcacha, Lagostomus maximus, is recognized as the mammalian species with the highest ovulation rate, which can reach as many as 300 ova. This remarkable polyovulation phenomenon can be examined through several methodological approaches that reflect its distinctive reproductive physiology. Natural ovulation is assessed by oocyte release during the breeding season, which provides insights into the species' spontaneous ovulatory mechanisms, with oocytes recovered by flushing the oviduct and uterine horns. In addition, experimental induction of ovulation using exogenous

Physiological and Genetic Adaptations to Diving in Sea Nomads.

Understanding the physiology and genetics of human hypoxia tolerance has important medical implications, but this phenomenon has thus far only been investigated in high-altitude human populations. Another system, yet to be explored, is humans who engage in breath-hold diving. The indigenous Bajau people ("Sea Nomads") of Southeast Asia live a subsistence lifestyle based on breath-hold diving and are renowned for their extraordinary breath-holding abilities. However, it is unknown whether this has a genetic basis. Using a comparative genomic study, we show that natural selection on genetic vari

Effect on sperm quality of different cryoprotectants in sperm of Chinchilla lanigera.

Chinchilla lanigera is an endangered species therefore the development of cryopreservation protocols for its gametes is a useful tool in the application of assisted reproduction techniques. A study of the functionality of the spermatozoa punctured from the cauda epididymis was performed on fresh or frozen-thawed samples with three cryoprotective media (test-yolk buffer, sucrose and glycerol). The effect that these media had on sperm physiology during the freezing, storage and later thawing process was analysed. A decrease in the percentages of viability, motility, membrane integrity and capaci

Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS): cause and effect and reconstructive considerations.

Between 25 and 80% of patients undergoing a low or very low anterior resection will suffer postoperatively, from a constellation of symptoms including fecal urgency, frequent bowel movements, bowel fragmentation and incontinence, collectively referred to as the low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). The etiology of LARS is multifactorial with the potential of sphincter injury during anastomosis construction, alterations in anorectal physiology, the development of a pudendal neuropathy, and a lumbar plexopathy with exacerbation of symptoms if there is associated anastomotic sepsis or the use o

Do we need gastric acid?

Evidence from comparative anatomy and physiology studies indicates that gastric acid secretion developed during the evolution of vertebrates approximately 350 million years ago. The cellular mechanisms that produce gastric acid have been conserved over the millennia and therefore proton pump inhibitors have pharmacological effects in almost all relevant species. These observations suggest that gastric acid provides an important selective advantage; however, in modern-day humans the need for gastric acid can be questioned in light of the widespread use of safe and effective pharmacologic acid s

Pressure response to rapid dilation of resting urethra in healthy women.

Rapid urethral dilations were performed by a balloon mounted on a double-tip transducer catheter for simultaneous measurement of pressure in urethra and bladder. The cross sectional area of the urethra was measured according to the field gradient principle. Pressure and cross sectional area were recorded synchronously. The response of the female urethra to rapid dilation is a typical stress relaxation effect with a pressure peak followed by a pressure decay over a few seconds. The peak pressure response represents the bladder pressure required in producing a corresponding urethral dilation by

Lateral line system and its innervation in Tetraodontiformes with outgroup comparisons: descriptions and phylogenetic implications.

The lateral line system and its innervation in ten tetraodontiform families and five outgroup taxa were examined. Although some homology issues remained unresolved, tetraodontiforms were characterized by having two types (at least) of superficial neuromasts (defined by the presence or absence of supporting structures) and accessory lateral lines and neuromasts (except Molidae in which "accessory" elements were absent). The preopercular line in Tetraodontiformes was not homologous with that of typical teleosts, because the line was innervated by the opercular ramule that was newly derived from

The influence of U.S. Army Basic Initial Entry Training on the muscular strength of men and women.

The influence of U.S. Army Basic Initial Entry Training on the maximum voluntary isometric strength (MVIS) and anthropometric parameters of men and women was investigated. Significant increases in weight and lean body mass (LBM) and decreases in percent body fat were found for both sexes during training. Significant increases in the MVIS of the upper torso (UT), leg extensors (LE), and trunk extensors (TE) were also found for both sexes. Females and males improved about the same amount on the LE (12.4% and 9.7%, respectively) but females improved significantly more than males on the UT (9.3% a

Therapeutic Potential of Cysteine and Its Derivatives in Dermatology.

Cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that plays a central role in skin physiology through thiol-mediated redox regulation and glutathione (GSH) synthesis. It critically influences melanogenesis, collagen homeostasis, and wound healing. However, its clinical application is limited by poor stability and bioavailability. In this review, we provide a mechanistic and comparative analysis of cysteine and its derivatives, including N-acetylcysteine (NAC), cysteinamide (C-NH2), GSH, and related compounds. These derivatives regulate melanogenesis by modulating dopaquinone pathways and tyrosinase

Effect of vegetable oil on ovarian steroidogenesis- A transcriptome approach to understand molecular mechanisms of hypothalamus pituitary and gonad axis (HPG) in Ompok bimaculatus.

Ompok bimaculatus is a commercially important food fish of Northeast India. For higher production of this species, the molecular mechanisms underlying its reproductive physiology is an important aspect to study. Vegetable oils are rich in ω3 and ω6 fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins, that enhance reproductive performances. In the present study, O. bimaculatus were first fed with vegetable oil at 3, 5, 7 and 9% in the diet. The best treatment was determined by the analysis of relative fecundity, fertilisation rate, Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Hepatosomatic Index (HIS). Comparative transcrip

The underlying mechanisms of vertebrate seasonal reproduction.

Animals make use of changes in photoperiod to adapt their physiology to the forthcoming breeding season. Comparative studies have contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms of seasonal reproduction in vertebrates. Birds are excellent models for studying these phenomena because of their rapid and dramatic responses to changes in photoperiod. Deep brain photoreceptors in birds perceive and transmit light information to the pars tuberalis (PT) in the pituitary gland, where the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced. This PT-TSH locally increases the level of the bioactive thyroid h

The vertebrate middle and inner ear: A short overview.

The evolution of the various hearing adaptations is connected to major structural changes in nearly all groups of vertebrates. Besides hearing, the detection of acceleration and orientation in space are key functions of this mechanosensory system. The symposium "show me your ear - the inner and middle ear in vertebrates" held at the 11th International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology (ICVM) 2016 in Washington, DC (USA) intended to present current research addressing adaptation and evolution of the vertebrate otic region, auditory ossicles, vestibular system, and hearing physiology. Physiological adaptation of Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1 to tetrachloroethene respiration.

Desulfitobacterium spp. are ubiquitous organisms with a broad metabolic versatility, and some isolates have the ability to use tetrachloroethene (PCE) as terminal electron acceptor. In order to identify proteins involved in this organohalide respiration process, a comparative proteomic analysis was performed. Soluble and membrane-associated proteins obtained from cells of Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1 that were growing on different combinations of the electron donors lactate and hydrogen and the electron acceptors PCE and fumarate were analyzed. Among proteins increasingly expressed

Cancer-related constipation.

Cancer-related constipation is common and a significant detractor from patient quality of life. It has many possible causes and is still not well understood. Information is lacking on therapies for cancer-related constipation among current medications approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Most agents have only been formally tested in comparison with placebo in chronic idiopathic constipation if at all. Few comparative studies of laxatives have been performed to establish superiority or synergy. As we understand more about the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract, new targe

[Phylogenetic aspect of human pathology].

In human diseases, the appearing signs of organisms more or less remote from man phylogenetically are usually considered to be atavisms which do not reflect the thesis of similarities in the evolutionary process. Phylogenetic similarities in human pathology represent recapitulations, parallelisms, and convergences. Since recapitulation was dealt with one of the previously published articles, this paper analyses parallelisms and convergences in pathology. By the examples of uterus malformations, gene and chromosome mutations, tumors, and tuberculosis it is shown that parallel development of a p
