A pilot study of coronary angioplasty in outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Is it safe to discharge patients from hospital on the same day as percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA)? The hypothesis tested was that careful pre and post angioplasty selection of patients can identify a group that is at very low risk of postprocedural complications and that these patients may be discharged on the day of the procedure. METHODS: 63 patients undergoing limited risk coronary angioplasty of 72 lesions were studied. So that patients would be able to walk soon after PTCA miniature equipment (6 French catheters and balloon-on-a-wire devices) was passed

Costing caesarean sections: a pilot study.

A random sample of mothers delivering at a nonteaching referral rural hospital is considered. Length of stay and complications following delivery are compared for mother and baby. A number of women who delivered vaginally are compared with those who were delivered by caesarean. An attempt is made to evaluate comsumption of hospital resources, especially staff, through patient dependency assessment. Qualitative data was gathered by working on the unit as a midwife and discussion with other midwives, early childhood nurses, obstetricians and mothers. A comparison is also made between difficultie

Employing transplant recipients: a pilot study.

This pilot study aimed to give some indication of the reasons why many transplant recipients seem to have difficulty finding employment. Twenty-one transplant recipients and 17 employers completed a questionnaire covering a variety of health and employment-related topics. The transplant procedures the recipients had undergone included heart, heart/lung, heart/liver, and heart/kidney. The employers represented a selection of large and small companies drawn from the Standard Occupation Classification. The responses indicated that the employers' knowledge of transplantation varied according to si

Attitudes toward certification. A pilot study.

The CNOR certification is a voluntary commitment that individual perioperative nurses make after considering financial, professional, and personal issues. The results of this survey indicate that CNOR certification is sought to fulfill personal and professional goals. A vital component in the delivery of quality perioperative patient care is the individual nurse. This is true whether or not the perioperative nurse is certified. One question is the value of the CNOR process in the validation of nurses for the delivery of perioperative patient care. It is easy to assume that if knowledge is pres

A pilot evaluation of radiography of the acute abdomen.

A pilot study to assess the value of abdominal films in acute surgical admissions was undertaken. The effect of chest and abdominal radiographs on the initial management of 100 consecutive patients was assessed. A management change of 10% was found and the implications are discussed. Patients with non-specific abdominal pain and women under 40 years of age had normal radiography. Pregnancy should first be excluded in the latter group.

Screening for abnormal haemoglobins: a pilot study.

A pilot study has been made of the implication of screening for abnormal haemoglobins in immigrant schoolchildren. An abnormality was detected by capillary blood haemoglobin electrophoresis in 8.4% of 6,835 children and a haemoglobinopathy outpatient clinic had to be established to deal with the heavy work load which resulted. The clinic was also used to determine the value of investigating the remaining members of the family once an abnormality had been detected in one child.Healthy siblings with normal haemoglobin electrophoretic patterns and normal iron and folate levels were studied to det

Validation of a Lenvatinib Assay: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: Lenvatinib has demonstrated efficacy in improving progression-free and overall survival in patients with radioiodine refractory thyroid cancer. However, treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) frequently cause dose interruptions and suboptimal dosing, underscoring the importance of monitoring of lenvatinib levels. Currently, there is no validated lenvatinib assay for clinical use. We describe the development of a mass spectrometry assay for accurate quantification of lenvatinib, along with a pilot study reporting peak and trough levels. DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: A pilot

AI co-pilot bronchoscope robot.

The unequal distribution of medical resources and scarcity of experienced practitioners confine access to bronchoscopy primarily to well-equipped hospitals in developed regions, contributing to the unavailability of bronchoscopic services in underdeveloped areas. Here, we present an artificial intelligence (AI) co-pilot bronchoscope robot that empowers novice doctors to conduct lung examinations as safely and adeptly as experienced colleagues. The system features a user-friendly, plug-and-play catheter, devised for robot-assisted steering, facilitating access to bronchi beyond the fifth genera

Photodynamic therapy of vitiligo: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is an acquired autoimmune skin disorder with depigmented macules and patches. There are several possible treatments for vitiligo, none of which could be considered as a definitive cure. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a novel treatment with controversial outcomes in vitiligo patients. MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 10 patches (5 patches on the trunk, 3 on the extremities, and 2 on the neck) were selected and received microderm abrasion. Then the lesion was covered with 5- aminolevulinic acid (ALA) for one hour. Afterwards, it received red light with a dose of 120 J/cm2.Thi

Pilot trials in thrombosis: Purpose and pitfalls.

Randomized controlled trials provide important evidence to guide clinical practice. These full-scale trials are expensive, time consuming and many are never successfully completed. Well conducted pilot studies help with full-scale trial design, assessment and optimization of feasibility, and can avoid the waste of resources associated with starting a full-scale trial that will not succeed. They also provide an opportunity for capacity growth and mentorship of new investigators. It is important to appreciate that the usual goal of a pilot trial is assessment of feasibility and refinement of tri

Development of a pilot cartilage surgery register.

BACKGROUND: Norway has no prospective surveillance system to monitor the outcome of knee cartilage surgery. In 2004 the Norwegian Registry of Knee Ligament (NKLR) was successfully established, and has yielded useful information on the treatment of patients with both knee ligament and combined knee injuries. Patients with focal cartilage defects (FCDs) in their knees have reduced function and the treatment is difficult. There are geographical variations in treatment, and the generalizability from randomized controlled studies is low. These patients would benefit from a standardized long-time fo

Idiopathic Syringomyelia in a Military Helicopter Pilot.

BACKGROUND: A syrinx is a fluid-filled cavity within the spinal cord. They can lead to a variety of symptoms, including limb weakness and back pain. Incidental finding of syringomyelia provides a challenge for clinicians due to the wide variety of possible symptoms. In military aviation, neurological findings in pilots can result in extensive investigation that can lead to potentially invasive management. Conversely, the potential for chronic progression of a spinal syrinx and subsequent neurological deterioration makes early identification critical. Ultimately, the discovery of a lesion may h…

Falls in the audiology clinic: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Falls are a common and often preventable cause of injury and death among older adults. Hearing loss, vestibular disorders, dizziness, and imbalance are common risk factors for falls; however, the rate of falls among older audiology patients has never been assessed. PURPOSE: To examine the fall history and risk factors of older adults seen in a university audiology clinic. RESEARCH DESIGN: A descriptive and correlational retrospective chart review of fall history and characteristics of patients seen in a university audiology clinic. STUDY SAMPLE: 88 (51 women, 37 men) patients ag

Tail vaccination in cats: a pilot study.

Feline injection site sarcomas affect 1-10 cats per every 10,000 vaccinated and are associated with high mortality. Radical resection may be curative, but is often associated with prolonged recovery, disfigurement and loss of function when tumors occur at currently recommended injection sites. The objective of this study was to assess alternatives to currently recommended vaccination sites in terms of preference by oncology practitioners, ease of injection and serological responses. Surgical, radiation and medical oncology practitioners were surveyed regarding their preference for vaccination

A fighter pilot case of pulmonary sequestration.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation. The diagnosis of pulmonary sequestration is based on the identification of an abnormal arterial supply. Conventional treatment for pulmonary sequestration is surgical removal of the tissue, which may induce serious trauma and requires a long recovery time. Recently, endovascular treatment has become feasible as a safer and less invasive method to treat pulmonary sequestration. CASE REPORT: To the best of our knowledge, pulmonary sequestration has not been reported in pilots. In this study, we report a fighter pilot case of…
