Psychophysical indexes of temporal processing abnormalities in children with developmental dyslexia.

Children with dyslexia and children progressing normally in reading performed several perceptual tasks to determine (a) the psychophysical m … dren with dyslexia and children with good reading skills. These included 2 auditory tasks (dichotic pitch perception and FM tone discrimination) and 2 visual tasks (global motion perception and contrast sensitivity). The battery of 12 tasks successfully classified 80% of the children into their respective reading-level groups. Within the group of children with dys …

Right frontotemporal activation by tonal memory in dyslexia, an O15 PET Study.

A prior study documented the failure of dyslexic men to activate left temporoparietal cortex during phonologic processing. Because of reports of an anomalous right planum temporale in developmental dyslexia, the functional implications of which are unknown, this study examined the ability of dyslexics to activate right temporal cortex. Regional cerebral blood flow was measured in 15 right-handed dyslexic men during rest and during a tonal memory task expected to activate right-sided cortex in controls. A matched control sample (n = 18) showed significant activation of several right frontotempo

What Makes Tinnitus Loud?

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus loudness is a subjective measure, and it does not directly reflect either tinnitus severity or the impact on daily life. Nevertheless, loud tinnitus may be the most frequent clinical complaint of tinnitus patients. Factors contributing to the loudness of the phantom sound have rarely been studied. We evaluated both matched and self-rated loudness in a large sample of patients with tinnitus and analyzed the influencing factors among demographic, hearing, and tinnitus characteristics. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-nine patients with chronic tinnitus were enrolled. We evalua

The lightness/pitch crossmodal correspondence modulates reported dominance in binocular rivalry.

Crossmodal correspondences (CMCs: systematic associations between feature dimensions across sensory modalities) are known to facilitate performance in simple detection and discrimination tasks and can bias reports of ambiguous figures. The present study tested whether a lightness/pitch CMC biases reported dominance in binocular rivalry. Across three experiments, participants viewed dichoptically presented black and white circles accompanied by relatively high- or low-pitched tones. Dominance reports were coded as congruent when they matched the lightness/pitch correspondence (white/high, black

Cross-language identification of long-term average speech spectra in Korean and English: toward a better understanding of the quantitative difference between two languages.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the quantitative differences between Korean and English in long-term average speech spectra (LTASS). DESIGN: Twenty Korean speakers, who lived in the capital of Korea and spoke standard Korean as their first language, were compared with 20 native English speakers. For the Korean speakers, a passage from a novel and a passage from a leading newspaper article were chosen. For the English speakers, the Rainbow Passage was used. The speech was digitally recorded using GenRad 1982 Precision Sound Level Meter and GoldWave® software and analyzed using MATLAB program. RESULTS:

[In situ sound pressure measurement in a professional violinist with bilateral tinnitus].

BACKGROUND: A case of a professional violinist suffering from a bilateral tinnitus is presented. The musician reported the tinnitus to be louder and more straining when playing his Vuillaume violin (France 1840) as compared with his Carcassi violin (Italy 1763). CASE REPORT: In the 42-year-old musician, audiometry revealed a normal hearing threshold in the right ear and a slight hearing loss in the left ear of up to 20 dB between 2 kHz and 8 kHz. Transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions could only be measured in the right ear. The tinnitus could be masked (distance type); residual inhibition w

Use of the articulation index for assessing residual auditory function in listeners with sensorineural hearing impairment.

Two experiments were performed to explore the feasibility of deriving an articulation index (AI) based scheme for quantifying residual auditory function in listeners with sensorineural hearing impairment. In the first experiment the AI procedure was applied to audiograms of normal and sensorineural hearing-impaired individuals in order to predict speech discrimination under various conditions. Good predictions were found for the normal and the less impaired subjects, but not for those with greater impairments. These subjects exhibited a disproportionate loss in speech discrimination compared t

Neural correlates of impaired vocal feedback control in post-stroke aphasia.

We used left-hemisphere stroke as a model to examine how damage to sensorimotor brain networks impairs vocal auditory feedback processing and control. Individuals with post-stroke aphasia and matched neurotypical control subjects vocalized speech vowel sounds and listened to the playback of their self-produced vocalizations under normal (NAF) and pitch-shifted altered auditory feedback (AAF) while their brain activity was recorded using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were utilized as a neural index to probe the effect of vocal production on auditory feedb

Effector-independent brain network for auditory-motor integration: fMRI evidence from singing and cello playing.

Many everyday tasks share high-level sensory goals but differ in the movements used to accomplish them. One example of this is musical pitch regulation, where the same notes can be produced using the vocal system or a musical instrument controlled by the hands. Cello playing has previously been shown to rely on brain structures within the singing network for performance of single notes, except in areas related to primary motor control, suggesting that the brain networks for auditory feedback processing and sensorimotor integration may be shared (Segado et al. 2018). However, research has shown

Characteristics of tinnitus in workers exposed to occupational noise: a systematic review.

Tinnitus is an auditory symptom characterized by the perception of sound without an external source and is often associated with occupational noise exposure. This study aimed to analyze the possible characteristics of tinnitus in workers exposed to occupational noise. This is a systematic literature review conducted by researchers who independently performed the search and analysis of articles. Searches were conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Scopus, and Web of Science databases as well as Google Scholar, used as a source of gray

Critical behavior and the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a musical phase transition.

We investigate the critical phenomena emerging from a statistical mechanics model of musical harmony on a three-dimensional (3D) lattice, and the resulting structure of the ordered phase. In this model, each lattice site represents a tone, with nearest neighbors interacting via the perception of dissonance between them. With dissonance assumed to be an octave-wise periodic function of pitch difference, this model is a 3D XY system with the same symmetry and dimensionality as superfluid helium and models of the cosmological axion field. We use numerical simulation to observe a phase transition

Salicylate-induced peripheral auditory changes and tonotopic reorganization of auditory cortex.

The neuronal mechanism underlying the phantom auditory perception of tinnitus remains elusive at present. For over 25 years, temporary tinnitus following acute salicylate intoxication in rats has been used as a model to understand how a phantom sound can be generated. Behavioral studies have indicated that the pitch of salicylate-induced tinnitus in the rat is approximately 16 kHz. In order to better understand the origin of the tinnitus pitch measurements were made at the levels of auditory input and output; both cochlear and cortical physiological recordings were performed in ketamine/xylazi

Changing the vocal characteristics of a postoperative transsexual patient: a longitudinal study.

The vocal characteristics of a 63-year-old individual who underwent male-to-female sex reassignment surgery were evaluated. Treatment was designed to alter inappropriate male voice characteristics. Speech goals were to (1) encourage use of successively higher pitch levels, and (2) modify tongue carriage to change resonance. After 11 months of therapy, average fundamental frequency for /i, a, u/ vowels changed from 110 to 205 Hz. Also, second formant frequency values changed remarkably for each of these vowels, with the greatest frequency change being 291 Hz for /i/. These acoustic differences

Sensory-motor networks involved in speech production and motor control: an fMRI study.

Speaking is one of the most complex motor behaviors developed to facilitate human communication. The underlying neural mechanisms of speech involve sensory-motor interactions that incorporate feedback information for online monitoring and control of produced speech sounds. In the present study, we adopted an auditory feedback pitch perturbation paradigm and combined it with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) recordings in order to identify brain areas involved in speech production and motor control. Subjects underwent fMRI scanning while they produced a steady vowel sound /a/ (speaki

A problem with auditory processing?

Recent studies have found associations between auditory processing deficits and language disorders such as dyslexia; but whether the former cause the latter, or simply co-occur with them, is still an open question.

Bilateral cochlear implants controlled by a single speech processor.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess, in one profoundly hearing impaired subject, potential benefits and limitations in placing bilaterally implanted scala tympani electrode arrays under control of a single speech processor. STUDY DESIGN: All available stimulation sites in both ears were compared in studies of pitch discrimination and pitch ranking, identifying three bilateral pairs capable of supporting interaural comparisons with no perceptible difference in pitch. Using those pairs, the subject's ability to lateralize sound was studied as a function of interaural time delay and interaural

Tinnitus.

Tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of an external sound, usually results from a disorder of: (1) the auditory system (usually peripheral, rarely central); (2) the somatosensory system (head and neck); or (3) a combination of the two. Its cause can be determined through its characteristics. The history must include the tinnitus': (1) quality (including whether it can ever be pulsatile or have a clicking component); (2) location; (3) variability; (4) predominant pitch (low or high); and (5) whether the patient can do something to modulate the percept. In addition to the standard ne

Eye movements and motion perception during off-vertical axis rotation after spaceflight.

Constant velocity off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) provides dynamic linear acceleration stimuli that can be used to assess otolith function. Eight astronauts were rotated in darkness about their longitudinal axis 20° off vertical at low (0.125 Hz) and high (0.5 Hz) frequencies and their responses were compared before and after spaceflight. Eye movements were recorded using infrared videography and perceived motion was evaluated using a joystick with four degrees of freedom - pitch and roll tilt, front-back and lateral translation. Low-frequency OVAR generates tilt otolith-induced responses -
