Interaction of Chemical Pesticides and Their Formulation Ingredients with Microbes Associated with Plants and Plant Pests.

Chemical pesticides and their formulation ingredients can have unintended effects on microbes associated with plants and plant pests. These effects can be due to direct effects on the microbes or to effects on crops or weeds that subsequently affect the microbes. In addition to fungicides, some insecticides, herbicides, and formulation compounds are toxic to plant pathogenic microbes, as well as to potentially beneficial microbes, such as those that infect insect pests. These chemicals, especially herbicides, can also indirectly affect microbes through their effects on crops and weeds. For exa…

Production of the Plant Hormone Auxin by Salmonella and Its Role in the Interactions with Plants and Animals.

The ability of human enteric pathogens to colonize plants and use them as alternate hosts is now well established. Salmonella, similarly to phytobacteria, appears to be capable of producing the plant hormone auxin via an indole-3-pyruvate decarboxylase (IpdC), a key enzyme of the IPyA pathway. A deletion of the Salmonella ipdC significantly reduced auxin synthesis in laboratory culture. The Salmonella ipdC gene was expressed on root surfaces of Medicago truncatula. M. truncatula auxin-responsive GH3::GUS reporter was activated by the wild type Salmonella, and not but the ipdC mutant, implying …

Plant-insect interactions: what can we learn from plant lectins?

Many plant lectins have high anti-insect potential. Although the effects of most lectins are only moderately influencing development or population growth of the insect, some lectins have strong insecticidal properties. In addition, some studies report a deterrent activity towards feeding and oviposition behavior. Transmission of plant lectins to the next trophic level has been investigated for several tritrophic interactions. Effects of lectins with different sugar specificities can vary substantially with the insect species under investigation and with the experimental setup. Lectin binding i

Phylogenomic insights into plant terrestrialization: from streptophyte algae to the rise of land plants.

The conquest of land by plants stands as a landmark event in the evolutionary history of Earth. Recent advances in phylogenomics, particularly the rapid accumulation of omics data on streptophyte algae and early-diverging land plants (including bryophytes, lycophytes and ferns), have opened new avenues for revisiting this pivotal evolutionary event. In this study, we discuss recent progress in streptophyte phylogenomics and reveal how high-quality genome assemblies have transformed our understanding of plant terrestrialization. We further review advances in streptophyte phylogenetics, showing …

A-Occ-Plant: Plant occluded point cloud completion via amodal segmentation.

Plants are geometrically and topologically complex objects, and methods and devices that produce plant point clouds often miss parts due to self occlusions, making further analysis, such as phenotypic trait extraction or 3D reconstruction, difficult. We introduce A-Occ-Plant, a novel method for point cloud completion. The first novelty of our algorithm is converting point clouds into a set of images, which are then completed using 2D amodal segmentation. The images are then converted into a complete point cloud by using view-consistent Gaussian splats. The second novelty is the use of a coarse…

Medicinal-plant immunity and specialized metabolism in plant-pathogen interactions: mechanisms and applications.

Medicinal-plant immunity and specialized metabolism are mechanistically linked, but rigorous receptor validation, causal multi-omics, and field trials are needed for reliable translational applications. Medicinal plants combine classical immune signaling with lineage-specific specialized metabolism. This review focuses on the immune systems of medicinal plants and on how pathogen perception reshapes the biosynthesis of pharmacologically valuable secondary metabolites. We synthesize evidence for pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), emphasizing pattern-recognit…

Strange plants and the weirding climate: parasitic plant physiology under climate change.

Parasitic flowering plants are often seen as keystone species due to the broad influence they exert on communities worldwide. Positive and negative effects associated with parasitic plant infestation have been documented for a variety of species in multiple locations and under different experimental conditions. However, the impact of the different drivers of climate change on these plants has only recently begun to be analyzed in more detail. In this context, most studies have dealt with modeling future distribution ranges of parasite species and assessing potential ecological impacts. Buildin…

Diving into the Water: Amphibious Plants as a Model for Investigating Plant Adaptations to Aquatic Environments.

Amphibious plants can grow and survive in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. This review explores the diverse adaptations that enable them to thrive in such contrasting habitats. Plants with amphibious lifestyles possess fascinating traits, and their phenotypic plasticity plays an important role in adaptations. Heterophylly, the ability to produce different leaf forms, is one such trait, with submerged leaves generally being longer, narrower, and thinner than aerial leaves. In addition to drastic changes in leaf contours, amphibious plants display significant anatomical and physiologic…

Plant Transformation Techniques: Agrobacterium- and Microparticle-Mediated Gene Transfer in Cereal Plants.

Biotechnological methods for targeted gene transfers into plants are key for successful breeding in the twenty-first century and thus essential for the survival of humanity. Two decades ago, genetic transformation of crop plants was not routine, and it was all but impossible with important cereals such as barley and wheat. The recent focus on crop plant genomics-yet based on the Arabidopsis toolbox-boosted the research for more efficient plant transformation protocols, thereby considerably widened the number of genetically tractable crops. Moreover, modern genome editing methods such as the CR…

Efficient plant regeneration of yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris L.), a medicinal plant.

Lysimachia vulgaris L. (yellow loosestrife) is a medicinal plant that has been used in the treatment of fever, ulcer, diarrhea and wounds in traditional medicine. A reliable in vitro culture protocol for yellow loosestrife was established. Explants (leaf lamina, stem internode and root segments) were cultured on Murashige and Skoog minimal organics (MSMO) medium supplemented with various plant growth regulator combinations. Of the tested combinations, those involving benzyladenine (BA) with either indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) or indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) were the most effective for all used ex…

Machine vision extracted plant movement for early detection of plant water stress.

A methodology was established for early, non-contact, and quantitative detection of plant water stress with machine vision extracted plant features. Top-projected canopy area (TPCA) of the plants was extracted from plant images using image-processing techniques. Water stress induced plant movement was decoupled from plant diurnal movement and plant growth using coefficient of relative variation of TPCA (CRV[TPCA)] and was found to be an effective marker for water stress detection. Threshold value of CRV(TPCA) as an indicator of water stress was determined by a parametric approach. The effectiv…

Nucleic acids in medicinal plants and their pharmaceutical potential.

Medicinal plants, as a core constituent of traditional medicine, provide an essential foundation for preventing and treating human diseases. Research on their pharmacologically active constituents has long focused on secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and other compounds. However, with the rapid advancement of molecular biology techniques, nucleic acids have gradually become a research focus as a novel class of active components in medicinal plants that possess both nutritional and regulatory functions. This paper systematically reviews the types, characteristi…

Bioluminescent sentinel plants enable autonomous diagnostics of viral infections.

Plants engineered with synthetic genetic programs can transform how we monitor and manage the extension of crop pests and diseases. Here, we establish a bioluminescent platform in Nicotiana benthamiana for autonomous viral sensing based on the fungal bioluminescence pathway (FBP). We first demonstrate that recombinant viruses can deliver missing pathway components, establishing a methodological framework for spatially resolved tracking of infection dynamics. Leveraging this starting point, we develop a dual-output sentinel circuit that uses a protease-responsive bioluminescence resonance energ…

The expanding functional landscape of alternative splicing in plants.

Alternative splicing (AS) massively expands transcriptome diversity but does so within a densely interconnected regulatory network that challenges simple, linear models of gene expression. Despite its pervasiveness, principles governing AS choices and their functional outcomes are only beginning to emerge. Recent work in plants places AS at the interface of transcriptional dynamics, RNA fate, and protein output, raising fundamental questions about how transcript diversity translates into function. In parallel, splicing factors are increasingly recognized as multifunctional regulators with 'moo…

A splicing switch enables SR45a-driven thermotolerance in plants.

Heat stress reshapes plant transcriptomes through alternative splicing, yet the regulatory logic governing isoform switching remains poorly understood. Recently, a heat-activated, branch-point-dependent splicing switch in Serine/arginine-rich splicing factor 45a (SR45a) was uncovered by Xu et al. This switch couples transcriptional activation to isoform remodeling, driving thermotolerance.

Decoding dialog: the auxin-calcium signaling crosstalk in plants.

Auxin and calcium (Ca2+) are central plant signals that coordinate growth, development, and responses to environmental cues. Typically studied as largely parallel pathways, they are now increasingly recognized as interconnected networks whose activities converge at multiple regulatory levels. Recent advances in live imaging, biosensors, optogenetics, and structural approaches have revealed that auxin can rapidly trigger Ca2+ influx from the apoplast via TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESPONSE1 (TIR1)/AUXIN-SIGNALING F-BOX (AFB)-dependent signaling mechanisms and Ca2+ channels, presumably involving cyclic
