A case of malignant lymphoma associated with IgD monoclonal gammopathy is described. Orbital and testicular tumors were observed, while peripheral lymphadenopathy was absent. Neoplastic lymphoid cells appeared in peripheral blood, bone marrow, and pleural effusion with progression of the disease. Analysis of the serum suggested "unreactive" light chain determinants in monoclonal protein. In immunohistochemical studies and in vitro experiments, it was confirmed that IgD monoclonal gammopathy was directly related to the neoplastic cells. These unusual findings suggest that neoplastic changes suc

We describe a rapid method for the estimation of adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in cerebrospinal, pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial fluids. Tuberculous effusions show significantly higher levels of ADA activity compared with effusions due to other underlying lesions such as neoplasms, bacterial and viral infections and simple transudates. Similarly, tuberculous meningitis results in raised ADA activity in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when compared with the CSF from patients with other neurological disorders and from normal subjects. The results in 359 cases studied indicated the value

A solitary fibrous tumor develops from mesenchymal cells as a pleural neoplasm, but it is also occasionally reported in extrapleural sites. Retroperitoneal tumors are a group of neoplasms located between muscles and the fascia of the posterior abdominal wall and the parietal peritoneum. Their cytology differs from that of urinary tract organs or adrenals. This case report presents a rare solitary fibrous tumor incidentally found during an ultrasound examination. A 54-year-old male underwent urgent surgery for a tumor located in the left retroperitoneal space. The histologic examination confirm

Introduction. Primary splenic angiosarcoma is an extremely unusual neoplasm originating from sinusoidal vascular endothelium. Surgical extirpation is the mainstay of treatment of this highly malignant disease. Case Presentation. An 82-year-old woman was admitted with left pleural effusion and a palpable left upper quadrant abdominal mass, secondary to splenomegaly by two large splenic tumors. Classic open splenectomy was performed and angiosarcoma of the spleen was the final histopathological diagnosis, which was primary since no other disease site was revealed. Discussion. The incidence of th

A 2-year-old gelding presented with a history of lethargy and anorexia. Physical examination revealed pleural and abdominal fluid, as well as several masses in the scrotum. The horse became acutely dyspneic despite 7 days of supportive care. Because of the poor prognosis, the owners elected euthanasia. Gross necropsy findings included multiple masses in the scrotum and inguinal canals and along the dorsal peritoneal cavity. The neoplasm infiltrated the kidneys, liver, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes, mesentery, and abdominal surface of the diaphragm. Histologically, the neoplasm is composed of

Intra-abdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a recently described, rare neoplasm that usually occurs in male adolescents, has a poor prognosis, and displays a typical clinicopathological profile. This aggressive neoplasm exhibits a predominantly intra-abdominal serosal pattern, with frequent pelvic extension, less frequent retroperitoneal involvement, and rare pulmonary and mediastinal spread. We report on the autopsy findings of a 9-year-old male who presented with a biopsy-proven DSRCT involving the abdomen, retroperitoneum, and scrotum and additional radiologic studies sug

Diffuse-type tenosynovial giant cell tumor (D-T TSGCT) is regarded as a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm with significant recurrent potential. We report a case of malignant D-T TSGCT with pleural metastases arising in the left knee in a 57-year-old man. The tumor demonstrated atypical features, including a solid infiltrative pattern with spindling of the tumor cells, nuclear pleomorphism with prominent nucleoli, and markedly increased mitotic activity (>20 mitoses/10 high-power fields). The immunoprofile demonstrated clusterin+, D2-40+, CD68+, p63+, MDM2+, and p16+ tumor. The next-genera

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) is a rare malignant neoplasm with poor survival that shares some similarities with the best-known pleural variant, pleural mesothelioma. The recent European Reference Network on Rare Adult Cancers (EURACAN)/International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) proposals attempted to improve the histological diagnosis and patient risk stratification. Herein, we investigated whether the pathology recommendations and suggestions of the pleural proposals were applicable to diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

The complex embryology of the anterior mediastinum makes it home to an array of primary neoplasms tied to the presence of the thyroid and thymus glands in that compartment. While the occurrence of ectopic thyroid deposits in the extramediastinal thorax has not been convincingly established, the other three "Ts" of the classic "4T" mnemonic for the differential diagnosis of an anterior mediastinal mass have occurred in the lung parenchyma, pleural space, and endobronchially as primary tumors. Finding any of the three lesions - thymoma, teratoma, or B-cell lymphoma - in the chest outside the med

BACKGROUND: Meigs syndrome is characterized by the association of a benign ovarian tumor, typically an ovarian fibroma, with pleural effusion and ascites.
CASE SUMMARY: This report presents a case of a 54-year-old woman who was misdiagnosed with malignant ovarian neoplasm due to the presence of significant abdominal distension and elevated CA125 levels. Initial imaging at multiple external facilities suggested a left-sided malignant ovarian tumor, leading to unnecessary delays in treatment. Upon admission to our institution in April 2024, imaging confirmed a large pelvic mass, and subsequent

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a malignant form of neoplasm that originates from skeletal muscle. RMSs can exist anywhere in the human body but are more commonly detected in the neck region and extremities. The alveolar type is one of the subtypes of RMS that has a poor prognosis. Because the clinical manifestation of a tumour can be a painless mass, symptoms might be non-contributary to the diagnosis. Herein, a four-month-old girl was admitted to the emergency department with complaints of respiratory distress without a runny nose, cough, and fever. Recurrent effusions subsided with subsequent tub

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and highly drug resistant tumor arising from the mesothelial surfaces of the lung pleura. The standard method to confirm MPM is the tedious, time-consuming cytological examination of cancer biopsy. Biomarkers that are detectable in pleural effusion or patient serum are reasonable options to provide a faster and noninvasive diagnostic approach. As yet, the current biomarkers for MPM lack specificity and sensitivity to discriminate this neoplasm from other lung tumors. CD44, a multifunctional surface receptor has been implicated in tumor progression

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is the most frequent pleural neoplasm, with asbestos exposure as one of the recognized carcinogen agents, causative in 80% of cases. The prognosis is poor; median survival of untreated cases is 6-9 months, with fewer than 5% of patients surviving 5 years. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma (SM) represents the subtype with the worst outcome and median survival ranging from 3.5 to 8 months. In the last few years, an accurate differentiation between the subtypes of MPM has become a crucial issue, due to differences in chemosensitivity and clinical outcome, and several s

BACKGROUND: A pleural effusion in children is usually caused by infectious diseases; malignant effusion is very uncommon. In a case of a malignant effusion in a child, a pleura-based metastasis of a neoplasm with a typically high prevalence in childhood has to be considered. Examples are neuroblastoma, nephroblastoma, Wilms' tumor, hepatoblastoma, malignant germ cell tumor and rhabdomyosarcoma.
CASE: A 4-year old boy presented with a unilateral pleural effusion. Cytologic examination of the effusion revealed malignant small round cells admixed with very large cells with atypical nuclei. In fo

RATIONALE: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) involves the proliferation of extramedullary blasts from 1 or more myeloid lineages, replacing the original tissue structures, and these neoplasias are called granulocytic sarcoma, chloroma, or extramedullary myeloid neoplasms. These tumors develop in lymphoid organs, bones, skin, soft tissues, various mucous membranes, organs, and the central nervous system. MS is rare in non-leukemic patients, while MS patient with effusion as the first manifestation is even rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of 44-year-old woman with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vom

On the basis of 109 thoracoscopic examinations--out of a total number of 1,014 thoracoscopies performed between 1981 and 1986 at our Department--carried out to investigate localised disorders of the lungs and wall of the chest, the diagnostic effectiveness of the method for this indication has been examined. The lesions involved were 59 pulmonary foci, and 50 localised changes involving the wall of the chest, thoracic spine or diaphragm. With the aid of thoracoscopy, the diagnosis proved possible in 83% of the disorders of the chest wall, in comparison with only 46% in the case of the pulmonar

BACKGROUND: Pleural mesothelioma is a deadly asbestos induced cancer. Less than 10% of mesothelioma patients survive 5 years post diagnosis. However survival can range from a few months to a number of years. Accurate prediction of survival is important for patients to plan for their remaining life, and for clinicians to determine appropriate therapy. One unusual feature of mesothelioma is that patients frequently present with tumor-associated pleural effusions early in the course of the disease.
OBJECTIVE: To study whether cells and molecules present in pleural effusions provide prognostic in

OBJECTIVE: Pleural mesothelioma is a neoplasm almost exclusively attributed to occupational exposure to asbestos and is legally considered an occupational disease. Nevertheless, only a few cases achieve that official recognition. The objective of this work was to describe and analyse this issue, and to identify the major obstacles to its recognition.
METHODS: A descriptive and retrospective epidemiological study of data was carried out, including figures and some characteristics, of all patients with pleural mesothelioma registered in the official health and labor registries of the Valencian

Mesothelioma is a rare and insidious neoplasm and is characterized by its highly malignant and aggressive nature. The most common etiology is asbestos exposure, but there are some reports without known asbestos exposure and other factors leading to malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Here, we present the case of a 58-year-old woman with pleuritic chest pain, dyspnea, and fever on presentation to the emergency department (ED), which caused several admissions to the ED in 20 days. The patient was then admitted to the internal medicine department with a diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia

BACKGROUND: Psammoma bodies (PBs) are encountered only rarely in body cavity fluids (BCF). Although to the authors' knowledge their presence in certain neoplasms (e.g., those of the thyroid, ovary, lung, brain, etc.) is established, their significance in BCF has not been well defined.
METHODS: Diagnoses concerning 3335 BCF samples were reviewed from the cytopathology files for the presence of PBs over an 8-year period. Cytologic preparations included cytospin preparations and Millipore filters stained with the Papanicolaou stain. Clinicopathologic correlation was performed on any subsequent s
