Analysis of the efficacy of triple-channel minimally invasive knee arthroscopy in treating popliteal cysts in children.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate a technique for treating pediatric popliteal cysts with a triple-channel knee arthroscopic approach, hypothesizing that this technique exhibits favorable clinical outcomes with reduced recurrence rates. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 14 patients with symptomatic pediatric popliteal cysts admitted to the joint surgery center using an arthroscopic minimally invasive technique from December 2017 to December 2020. Arthroscopy was employed for adequate enlargement of the posterior medial flap opening between the c…

[Clinical research of popliteal cyst excision combined with debridement of the knee under arthroscopy with local anesthesia].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effects of popliteal cyst excision combined with debridement of the knee under arthroscopy with local anesthesia. METHODS: From February 2009 to August 2014, 52 patients with popliteal cysts were treated in our hospital, including 34 males and 18 females with an average age of 43.6 years old ranging from 14 to 62 years old; 29 cases were on the right knee and 23 on the left knee. Preoperative diagnosis was performed according to MRI findings and to determine whether other knee disorders were associated with the disease, 52 patients were diagnosed as poplite…

The pathology and evaluation of surgical treatment in a ruptured giant popliteal/crural cyst associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract Popliteal cysts are often observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and giant cysts that extend from the popliteal to the crural region (popliteal/crural cysts) are occasionally encountered. We studied the background of popliteal/crural cysts and therapeutic results, and evaluated its etiologic factors and the effectiveness of surgical treatment. Nine knees of eight patients with popliteal/crural cyst secondary to RA, which was treated surgically because it resisted conservative treatment, and was followed up for 1 year or longer after surgery, were evaluated. The patients …

Aspergillus infection of total knee arthroplasty presenting as a popliteal cyst. Case report and review of the literature.

Fungal infections have only rarely been reported to occur in patients having undergone total knee arthroplasty. This case report documents the first known case of Aspergillus fumigatus as the offending organism. Its initial presentation as a popliteal cyst further reinforces the known association of popliteal cysts and intra-articular knee pathology.

Dissecting popliteal cyst resulting from a fragmented, dislodged metal part of the patellar component after total knee arthroplasty.

Dissecting popliteal cyst is an uncommon complication after total knee arthroplasty, occurring mainly as a result of either rheumatoid arthritis or a malfunctioning knee prosthesis. Its association with a failed metal-backed patellar component has not been reported since the introduction of the resurfacing of the patella with this kind of design in 1980. We present a case of a late fracture-dislocation of the metal part of the patellar component that migrated to the posterior popliteal fossa, resulting in a cystic mass formation caused by a foreign body granuloma. The patient was treated succe…

Isolated Flexor Hallucis Longus Weakness Caused by a Popliteal Ganglion Cyst Compressing the Tibial Nerve: A Case Report.

CASE: A 43-year-old woman presented with left foot numbness and progressive difficulty flexing the great toe. Examination revealed isolated flexor hallucis longus (FHL) weakness. Plain radiographs of the left knee showed no degenerative changes. MRI showed a multiloculated ganglion cyst in the left popliteal fossa with increased FHL signal intensity, suggestive of denervation edema. Cyst aspiration resulted in immediate FHL recovery, but the cyst recurred 3 months later, and complete recovery was achieved after surgical excision. At the 3-year follow-up, the patient remained symptom-free with

Complicated septic arthritis after knee arthroscopy in a 75-year-old man with osteoarthritis and a popliteal cyst.

A 75-year-old man presented in shock secondary to septic arthritis of the knee. The patient, with a known history of knee osteoarthritis, was treated elsewhere for mechanical locking symptoms and effusion with arthroscopic debridement, and developed septic arthritis, which disseminated to the leg and foot after a tear in the capsule, and a ruptured pyogenic popliteal cyst. Open debridement of the knee joint, and drainage of the abscesses of the leg and foot, were performed. Antibiotic-loaded cement beads were left in the residual space. Debridement was repeated and cement beads removed after 4…

Popliteal glomangioma mimicking Baker's cyst in a 9-year-old child: an unusual location of a glomus tumor.

Popliteal cysts (Baker's cyst) are very common conditions in children. However, in the differential diagnosis of popliteal cysts in childhood, glomus tumor is the most infrequent diagnosis. This is a relatively uncommon soft tissue tumor that can occur at any age and any anatomic site, with a predilection for the subungual region. In the reported series, extradigital glomangiomas involving the knee are located in the patellar ligament, quadriceps tendon, patellar fat pad, and popliteal fossa. In this study, I present a second case of glomus tumor located in the popliteal fossa and misdiagnosed…

Enhanced Surgical Outcomes of Popliteal Cyst Excision: A Retrospective Study Comparing Arthroscopic Debridement with and without Methylene Blue Injection.

BACKGROUND This retrospective study of 42 patients with popliteal cysts (or Baker cysts) aimed to compare the effects on duration and outcomes of arthroscopic surgical debridement with and without the use of cyst injection with methylene blue (MB). MATERIAL AND METHODS Medical records of patients who underwent conventional arthroscopic surgery (n=20) or arthroscopic surgery after MB injection (n=22) for popliteal cysts between 2018 and 2021 were reviewed. The MB group underwent arthroscopic popliteal cystectomy with MB as the marker, and the control group underwent conventional arthroscopic po…

Post-Total Knee Replacement Persistent Bilateral Popliteal Cysts Requiring Surgical Excision: A Literature-Based Discussion.

We report a patient who developed the unusual complication of persistent symptomatic Baker's cyst (BC) requiring surgical excision following each of her total knee replacements (TKRs), which were performed 10 years apart. BCs are a common problem and rarely require operative intervention. This patient presented with osteoarthritis and a painful complex BC. A successful left TKR was performed but the BC persisted following the surgery. Conservative management of the BC after the TKR failed to alleviate the symptoms, and surgical excision of the BC was eventually performed. This patient experien

Simultaneous arthroscopic cystectomy and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty for the management of partial knee osteoarthritis with a popliteal cyst: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Popliteal cysts are secondary to degenerative changes in the knee joint. After total knee arthroplasty (TKA), 56.7% of patients with popliteal cysts at 4.9 years follow-up remained symptomatic in the popliteal area. However, the result of simultaneous arthroscopic cystectomy and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) was uncertain. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with severe pain and swelling in his left knee and the popliteal area. He was diagnosed with severe medial unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis (KOA) with a symptomatic popliteal cyst…

Compression syndromes of the popliteal artery due to intramuscular ganglion cyst of the biceps femoris: A case report and literature review.

Intramuscular ganglion cyst (IMGC) is a very rare lesion with an unidentified pathogeny that originates within the muscle. We encountered a case of 49-year-old man who complained of intermittent claudication in the right lower limb for 2 months. An intramuscular ganglion cyst in the biceps femoris muscle was diagnosed and located by Computed tomography angiography (CTA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which compressed the popliteal artery and resulted in ischemia in the right lower limb. Six months after surgical resection, there was no recurrence of the cyst and the popliteal artery was

Ultrasound-guided arthroscopic communication enlargement surgery may be an ideal treatment option for popliteal cysts - indications and technique.

PURPOSE: Several studies have shown an excellent success rate of communication enlargement surgery for popliteal cysts (Baker's cysts). Ultrasound-guided surgery can improve the accuracy of this procedure and may lead to better outcomes. This study describes a simple ultrasound-guided arthroscopic technique to manage popliteal cysts and reduce postoperative pain. METHODS: After routine arthroscopic observation with a standard 2-portal approach, the arthroscope is redirected toward the posteromedial compartment from the anterolateral portal through the intercondylar notch. A posteromedial port…
