Technological advances in caries diagnosis.

Understanding the nature of the caries lesion, disease activity, and the patient's caries risk are all used in determining the nature of dental care to be delivered. An examination should include a health and social history and clinical examination using appropriate technologies. This allows proper assessment and suggests a logical management intervention. Minimally invasive dentistry is a concept based on an assessment of a patient's caries risk and the application of the current therapies to prevent, control, and treat the disease. The history of the dental examination and the variety of cur

Localized prepubertal periodontitis in a 5-year-old child: investigations and clinical observations over a 3-year period.

A 5-year-old boy presented with persistent generalized gingival inflammation. Clinical and radiographic examination supplemented by immunological and microbiological investigation led to a diagnosis of localized prepubertal periodontitis. The child was subsequently monitored for 3 years and despite treatment there was continued bone loss related to his primary teeth. This case highlights the need for liaison between specialists in paediatric dentistry, periodontology, immunology and microbiology in order to diagnose prepubertal periodontitis and to establish a rational basis for treatment to p

Dentistry during and after COVID-19 Pandemic: Pediatric Considerations.

UNLABELLED: This article is a rumination on the outbreak of the dreaded coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic which has engulfed both the developed and the developing countries, thereby causing widespread global public health concerns and threats to human lives. Although countries have made varied efforts, the pestilence is escalating due to the high infectivity. It is highly likely that dental professionals in upcoming days will come across COVID-19 patients and SARS-CoV-2 carriers, and hence must ensure a tactful handling of such patients to prevent its nosocomial spread. Despite the

Metal Alloys Used in Dental Prosthetics and Their Impact on the Oral Microbiome: Narrative Review.

Introduction: One of the fundamental principles of modern medicine, including dentistry, is prevention. However, if treatment is not initiated, tooth loss can occur, necessitating the use of dental prostheses to restore the function and aesthetics of the stomatognathic system. The oral microbiome is a complex ecosystem that is sensitive to external factors, including the biomaterials used to manufacture dental prostheses. Objectives: This narrative literature review aims to identify and compare the effects of various metal alloys used in dentistry, specifically high-precious (gold), precious (

The crippling grip of antimicrobial resistance in dentistry: A review.

A primary challenge for dentists is maintaining or restoring a balanced oral microbiome, as it plays a significant role in determining oral health and disease states. However, oral diseases such as gingivitis, dental caries, periodontitis and peri-implantitis can occur when pathogenic microbes settle in the oral cavity and become part of the oral biofilm. There are several preventative and therapeutic strategies available today, but the majority of them are centered on antibiotics. Antibiotic stewardship in dentistry might be a helpful strategy to maximize and prevent inappropriate or even nee

The Use of Autogenous Gingival Graft for Treatment of Lingual Recession on Mandibular Anterior Teeth.

The goal of this article is to demonstrate the practicality and results of increasing the zone of keratinized tissue on the lingual surface of mandibular anterior teeth via case reports. Calculus is most commonly found on the lingual surface of these teeth, so they are subjected to inflammatory elements resulting in tissue deformation and destruction. Significant attention has been paid to grafting the buccal surface, but there is a paucity of information addressing the lingual surface of mandibular anterior teeth. Gingival augmentation procedures are essential before fixed restorative dentist

Repositioning of the gingival margin by extrusion.

In this case report, orthodontic intervention was used to move the gingival margin of a maxillary canine incisally by almost 9 mm to mimic a lateral incisor. Increasing the thickness of the labial plate of bone of the canine and subsequently increasing the thickness of the attached gingiva before extrusion prevented gingival recession at a later stage. In many situations, orthodontic treatment can achieve results that could not be attained by restorations and other means of cosmetic dentistry, especially when dealing with gingival margins and gingival height. A step-by-step approach to achievi
