Adolescent clinical populations and associations between trauma and behavioral and emotional problems.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma exposure is common during childhood and adolescence and is associated with youth emotional and behavioral problems. The present study adds to the current literature on trauma exposure among adolescent clinical populations by examining the association between trauma exposure and adolescent self-report of emotional and behavioral problems broadly, including internalizing and externalizing symptoms, in addition to the trauma-specific symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: This study included 94 female (64%) and male (36%) adolescents, ages 13-19, representing

Effectiveness of serotonergic drugs in the management of problem behaviors in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Neurodevelopmental disorders often result in disabilities associated with auto- and / or hetero-aggressive behaviors, that can be defined as "problem behaviors" (Lacy 2007). Therapeutic interventions are mainly directed towards the use of neuroleptic drugs or benzodiazepines, to ensure a rapid and significant sedation in most of cases. These pharmacological devices exposes the patient to clinical risks and/or long-term management difficulties. The main problem of the chronic use of benzodiazepines is the development of tolerance and dependence; furthermore benzodiazepine withdrawal or their ab…

An examination of sex differences on neurocognitive functioning and behavior problems in maltreated youth.

OBJECTIVE: In the developmental traumatology model, the biological construct of sex is considered a moderator that may negatively influence child maltreatment sequelae including those pertaining to neurocognitive function. METHOD: This study examined sex-differences in neurocognitive function and behavior problems in maltreated boys (n = 42), maltreated girls (n = 56) versus nonmaltreated boys (n = 45) and girls (n = 59). Maltreated boys were hypothesized to have poorer neurocognitive functioning than maltreated girls, and nonmaltreated boys and girls, in all neurocognitive domains, particula

Children with Sexual Behavior Problems: Clinical Characteristics and Relationship to Child Maltreatment.

Research examining children with sexual behavior problems (SBP) almost exclusively relies on caregiver reports. The current study, involving a sample of 1112 children drawn from a prospective study, utilizes child self-reports and teacher reports, as well caregiver-reports. First, analyses examined children displaying any SBP; a second set of analyses specifically examined children displaying interpersonal forms of SBP. Caregivers reported greater internalizing, externalizing, and social problems for children with general SBP and/or interpersonal SBP when compared to children without SBP. Care

Child Physical Abuse, Non-anemic Iron Deficiency and Behavior Problems.

PURPOSE: Child abuse is regarded as a life-course social determinant of health problems. However, little is known about the nutritional status of physically abused children and their cumulative effect on child behavior. The present study aimed to examine the non-anemic iron deficiency status of abused children and the combined effect of physical abuse and non-anemic iron deficiency on child behavior in China. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 314 children aged 11-14 (12.30±0.57) years old from Jintan, China. Children self-reported their physical abuse experiences and behavior prob

The Association Between Electronic Media and Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Late Childhood.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing concern that rising rates of electronic media use might be harmful. However, the extent to which different types of electronic media use might be associated with emotional and behavioral problems is unclear. In this study we examined associations between emotional and behavioral problems and electronic media use during late childhood, in a large community sample. METHODS: Participants were 876 8- to 9-year-old children taking part in the Childhood to Adolescence Transition Study in Australia. Parents reported on their child's emotional and behavioral problems using

Psychedelics not linked to mental health problems or suicidal behavior: a population study.

A recent large population study of 130,000 adults in the United States failed to find evidence for a link between psychedelic use (lysergic acid diethylamide, psilocybin or mescaline) and mental health problems. Using a new data set consisting of 135,095 randomly selected United States adults, including 19,299 psychedelic users, we examine the associations between psychedelic use and mental health. After adjusting for sociodemographics, other drug use and childhood depression, we found no significant associations between lifetime use of psychedelics and increased likelihood of past year seriou

Security in Father-child Relationship and Behavior Problems in Sexually Abused Children.

While the influence of mother-child relationships on children's recovery following sexual abuse has been documented, less is known about the possible contribution of father-child relationships on outcomes. The present study explored the contribution of children's perception of security in their relationship to the father on internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, while controlling for sociodemographic variables and variables associated with the mother-child relationship. Participants were 142 children who disclosed sexual abuse involving a perpetrator other than the biological fathe

Emotional flooding and hostile discipline in the families of toddlers with disruptive behavior problems.

This study examined the relationship between negative parenting practices and dysfunction in parents' cognitive processing of child affect cues in families of toddlers with disruptive behavior problems. This dysfunction comprised a bias toward the misclassification of child affect as anger (affect appraisal bias) and parents' proneness to emotional flooding (Gottman, 1991, 1993). Participants were families of toddlers (n = 82; 53% male; aged 18-48 months) referred to a tertiary-level health service for the treatment of disruptive behavior problems. Affect appraisal bias was indexed in terms of

Common behavioral problems among children with asthma: is there a role of asthma treatment?

BACKGROUND: An increased prevalence of behavioral problems has been described among children with asthma. OBJECTIVE: To investigate those associations between common behavioral problems and asthma, with an emphasis on the roles of medications used for asthma. METHOD: We studied 409 children who had been followed-up in pediatric allergy clinics and 157 age-matched healthy controls. A diagnostic and statistical manual disorder-referenced symptom inventory was used to assess "attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder" (ADHD), "attention deficit" (AD), "hyperactivity and impulsivity" (HI), and "o

Partner abuse or violence, parenting and neighborhood influences on children's behavioral problems.

We examined the relationship between neighborhood characteristics, parenting behaviors, experiences of intimate partner abuse or violence (IPV) and children's behavioral problems in a socioeconomically diverse sample of 383 families residing in an urban environment. Data were collected in the Fall/Winter of 2002. The census block group of residence was used as our measure of neighborhood. Census block groups typically contain 1500 residents on average. IPV was measured using a modified version of the HITS (physically Hurt, Insult, Threaten, and Screamed at) scale, a short four item tool assess

Parental alcoholism and offspring behavior problems: findings in Australian children of twins.

We examine the impact of rearing by an alcoholic parent on risk for child behavior problems using data on 2492 offspring drawn from two ongoing studies of children of female and male same- and opposite-sex twin pairs. Results of regression models predicting child behavior problems from parent and co-twin lifetime history of alcohol use disorder (AUD) provide support for genetic but not environmental transmission of externalizing and a measure of total problem behaviors. Results for internalizing behavior were inconclusive with respect to transmission of risk.

Developmental pathway modeling in considering behavior problems in young Russian children.

In planning interventions it is essential to understand how adverse risk factors in early childhood are associated with child mental health problems, whether some types of problems can be better explained by the specific risk factors, and whether early risk factors are differently related to different types of child behavior problems. A community sample of 692 1.5-3.5-year-old children from Northern Russia was assessed by means of maternal reports. The study compared two models for the development of internalizing (withdrawn, anxious/depressed) and externalizing (aggressive, destructive) behav
