Music during interventional radiological procedures, effect on sedation, pain and anxiety: a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of playing patient-selected music during interventional procedures on (1) the doses of sedation and analgesia and (2) anxiety levels. METHODS: Patients undergoing interventional radiological procedures were randomised to either the intervention (music) or the control (no music) group. Patients in the intervention group had music of their choice played via headphones during the procedure. The primary outcomes were reductions in the doses of drugs for sedation (midazolam) and analgesia (fentanyl). Anxiety levels were assessed both before and after the procedure

Left shoulder pain during meals: a rare complication after laparoscopic Toupet procedure in children.

An uncommon complication of laparoscopic Toupet procedure is reported. A 13-year-old girl, with symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease for many years, including esophagitis detected by gastro-esophageal endoscopy, underwent laparoscopic fundoplication. Ten days after the procedure, isolated episodes of pain localized to the left shoulder appeared during meals. No dysphagia, chest pain, or heartburn was associated with this pain. All explorations (including abdomino-thoracic computed tomography, endoscopy, barium meal, Ph-metry) were negative. Six months after the operation, symptoms rema

An investigation of cognitive-behavior therapy combined with oral valium for children undergoing painful medical procedures.

In previous research, a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) package was found to be effective in reducing children's distress associated with the painful medical procedures of bone marrow aspirations (BMAs) and lumbar punctures (LPs). Orally administered Valium demonstrated less effectiveness but was helpful in reducing behavioral distress before the medical procedure. In the present study, we investigated whether the combination of oral Valium and CBT would result in increased efficacy of the CBT. Eighty-three subjects were randomly assigned to receive either CBT or CBT plus Valium while under

Skin-to-skin contact for painful procedures in younger preterm infants: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Skin-to-skin contact for pain (SSCP) has been recommended as a pain management strategy broadly for infants but no systematic reviews have focused exclusively on the youngest of preterm infants. These infants are subjected to increased number of painful procedures over longer hospitalizations, are less physiologically stable, and may have more fragile skin integrity than older preterm infants. Thus, the objective of the present study was to conduct a meta-analysis and narrative synthesis to examine the effectiveness of skin-to-skin contact for pain in younger preterm infants. Four pain-related

Pain Control for Outpatient Colposcopy, Loop Electrode Excision Procedure, Vulvar Biopsy, and Endometrial Biopsy.

OBJECTIVES/PURPOSES OF THE STUDY: Outpatient gynecologic biopsies elicit discomfort that negatively impacts patient satisfaction and limits the ability to obtain adequate sampling. We examined relevant studies focusing on colposcopy, loop electrode excision procedure, endometrial biopsies, or vulvar biopsies. METHODS: This systematic review conducted a search in PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, Embase, and Scopus databases following PRISMA Guidelines. Two reviewers independently extracted data from each study with Covidence software. Exclusion criteria included articles published before 2015, proc

Treatment of postural headache occurred 26 days after spinal pain procedure - A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage may cause intracranial hypotension and postural headache. Secondary intracranial hypotension may result from an iatrogenic dural puncture or traumatic injury associated with pain procedures. CASE: A 45-year-old male developed a headache 26 days after spinal pain procedure. Headache was characterized as postural, worsening with standing or sitting and improving while lying down. The pain did not resolve despite the administration of oral and intravenous analgesics. A spinal magnetic resonance imaging revealed epidural venous congestion and a suspic

Pain profile of premature infants during routine procedures in neonatal intensive care: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Premature neonates receive a large number of painful procedures during their stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). However, there are many other processes that happen in the NICU, which may not be considered painful but can cause discomfort and/or stress to the neonate. METHOD: Pain profile during routine procedures in NICU was assessed using the premature infant pain profile (PIPP) score. Neonates of gestational age >26 weeks, less than 7 days old and admitted for less than 7 days in the NICU were included. RESULTS: A total of 662 procedures were observed in 132 (78 M

Trial of Music, Sucrose, and Combination Therapy for Pain Relief during Heel Prick Procedures in Neonates.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of music, oral sucrose, and combination therapy for pain relief in neonates undergoing a heel prick procedure. STUDY DESIGN: This randomized, controlled, blinded crossover clinical trial included stable neonates >32 weeks of postmenstrual age. Each neonate crossed over to all 3 interventions in random order during consecutive heel pricks. A video camera on mute mode recorded facial expressions, starting 2 minutes before until 7 minutes after the heel prick. The videos were later analyzed using the Premature Infant Pain Profile-Revised (PIPP-R) scale onc

Validation of a sham acupuncture procedure in a randomised, controlled clinical trial of chronic pelvic pain treatment.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is an attractive treatment option for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) that has proved refractory to conventional medical treatments. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine the benefit of acupuncture because few studies have employed controls or had physiological outcome measures. OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of a sham, or minimally invasive, acupuncture as a control for studies evaluating the efficacy of acupuncture treatment for chronic pelvic pain. METHODS: Participants were recruited from a double-blind randomised trial co

Ultrasound-guided interventional procedures for patients with chronic pelvic pain - a description of techniques and review of literature.

Chronic pelvic pain can present in various pain syndromes. In particular, interventional procedure plays an important diagnostic and therapeutic role in 3 types of pelvic pain syndromes: pudendal neuralgia, piriformis syndrome, and "border nerve" syndrome (ilioinguinal, iliohypogastric, and genitofemoral nerve neuropathy). The objective of this review is to discuss the ultrasound-guided approach of the interventional procedures commonly used for these 3 specific chronic pelvic pain syndromes. Piriformis syndrome is an uncommon cause of buttock and leg pain. Some treatment options include the i

Decreasing procedural pain over time of left prefrontal rTMS for depression: initial results from the open-label phase of a multi-site trial (OPT-TMS).

BACKGROUND: There is much interest in whether daily left prefrontal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over several weeks may become a clinically useful antidepressant treatment. Although rTMS appears largely safe, many patients report that this procedure is somewhat painful, which may restrict its ultimate appeal and utility. We analyzed interim results from the open-label phase of a multi-site randomized trial of rTMS as a treatment for depression to investigate whether the procedural pain of left prefrontal rTMS changes over time. METHODS: Patients with unipolar depression…
