Comparing the delirium objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) education package to standard education for post-registration nurses: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A recent pilot study demonstrated that an interactive delirium educational intervention, The Delirium OSCE Education Package, had a positive impact on self-perceptions of confidence and competence in the use of delirium assessment tools and delirium knowledge; delirium knowledge scores; clinical practice; and planned practice change for participants. However, it is not known if The Delirium OSCE Education Package is superior to standard methods of professional development education. OBJECTIVE: To determine if The Delirium OSCE Education Package is superior to standard methods of p

Potential clients' beliefs about the relative competency and caring of psychologists: implications for the profession.

To assess the extent to which the results reported by Warner and Bradley (1991) can be generalized beyond the population of undergraduate psychology students, 132 adults in the metropolitan Harrisburg area were asked to evaluate the competency and traits of clinical psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and psychiatrists. Results indicated that the general public believed counselors to be more caring than psychologists and psychiatrists. All three professional groups were perceived to be comparable in their ability to treat the least severe disorders. Licensed counselors were percei

Palliative Care Professionals' Inner Life: Exploring the Relationships Among Awareness, Self-Care, and Compassion Satisfaction and Fatigue, Burnout, and Coping With Death.

CONTEXT: Professionals working in the landscape of death and dying frequently are exposed to existential issues, psychological challenges, and emotional distress associated with care at the end of life. Identifying factors that help professionals cope with frequent exposure to issues related to mortality could enhance palliative care providers' and patients' quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To improve our understanding of the factors associated with professionals' inner life, through the assessment of an adapted version of Kearney and Kearney's awareness model of self-care. The main assumptions o

International expert perspectives on pharmacogenomics in pharmacy education: a qualitative study with implications for South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacogenomics (PGx) has the potential to transform healthcare in South Africa through the delivery of precision medicine. However, the successful implementation of PGx services depends on a healthcare workforce equipped with appropriate PGx competencies. Given pharmacists' central role in medication management, they are key members of the PGx team and require targeted education to support PGx-guided clinical decision-making. Insights from international experts can inform the development of pharmacy curricula, strengthening pharmacists' capacity to facilitate PGx implementation

Building a genomics-capable cancer workforce: a competency-based framework for education and training in precision oncology.

BACKGROUND: The Lancet Oncology Commission on cancer genomics and precision oncology identified workforce capability, education, and training as major constraints to equitable implementation. As genomic and multi-omic technologies become integrated into cancer care, structured approaches are needed to define competencies across the multidisciplinary workforce. METHODS: The Core Competency Framework for Precision Oncology was developed using a narrative review and iterative expert-informed framework development process. Competency frameworks, professional standards, policy guidance, organisati

[Development of entrustable professional activities for 39 residency programs].

INTRODUCTION: Entrustable professional activities (EPA) were developed to connect competencies with clinical practice and make them operational. These are tasks that can be entrusted to a trainee once he/she has obtained adequate competence to perform them, without supervision. By definition, residencies are the ideal setting for their implementation. However, one of the main challenges lies in the design and incorporation of EPA into current training programs. Through a collaborative effort between the Medical Education Department at Medicine University and Hospital de Clínicas, a pathway has

Enhancing Nursing Students' International Competencies Through a Virtual Exchange Program: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Background/Objectives: We conducted a virtual exchange program (VEP) to facilitate discussions on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among nursing students in Belgium, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand and to assess the improvements in international competencies. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study with a pre- and post-test design, students who voluntarily participated in the VEP were compared with a matched group of non-participants. International competencies were assessed using the STRENCO (Strengthening multi-professional competencies in mental health) Competency Assessment Tool,

The credential and the clinician: Generative AI, cognitive substitution, and what universities owe society in nursing education.

AIM/OBJECTIVE: To argue that generative AI (GenAI) poses a distinct threat to nursing credentialling, one that operates as cognitive substitution rather than cognitive supplement, and to examine why a prominent institutional response to GenAI in assessment, while well designed for general higher education, fails when applied to nursing. BACKGROUND: Nursing registration across jurisdictions rests on the assumption that university assessment has verified a graduate's competence. GenAI is now widely used in assessed work. When it produces the work through which competence is certified, the crede

Teachers' Knowledge and Beliefs About Child Sexual Abuse.

Child sexual abuse is one of the main types of abuse still to be addressed within the field of education, yet the education system itself can serve as a primary tool for its prevention. A better understanding of teachers' knowledge and beliefs about child sexual abuse will allow us to establish key starting points from which to utilize the system for prevention. Four hundred and fifty teachers participated in this study, completing a questionnaire regarding their knowledge and beliefs about child sexual abuse. The study revealed that over half the teachers, 65.3% (n = 294), had never received

Developing leadership through talk: how small group reflections can enhance leadership competence.

INTRODUCTION: Competency-based medical education in postgraduate medical education (PGME) prioritises developing holistic physicians, including leadership competence. The leadership competence encompasses self-management, working effectively in teams, considering organisational and societal demands and navigating complex situations. Although group reflection has proven valuable for leadership development in other professional fields, its role in PGME remains underexplored. This qualitative study investigated how small group reflection can support the development of leadership competence among

Associations Between Emotional Competence and Emotional Empathy in Secondary-Level Vocational Nursing Students at One Croatian School: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Empathy is essential to humanized nursing care, yet its relationship with emotional competence before professional entry remains insufficiently specified. This single-school cross-sectional study examined whether distinct dimensions of emotional competence were differentially associated with emotional empathy among 337 secondary-level vocational nursing students enrolled in a five-year Croatian program for general care nurses/medical technicians. Students completed the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ-45) and the Emotional Empathy Scale from the E-Questionnaire, which primar

Constructing a competency model for family education guidance among rural teachers in ethnic minority border regions: a grounded theory approach.

Rural families residing in ethnic minority border regions require precisely targeted family education guidance, and a professionally trained teaching workforce constitutes a critical prerequisite for the successful implementation of school-based family education guidance services. Employing a qualitative research paradigm grounded in constructivist epistemology, this study investigates the competency structure underlying family education guidance among rural teachers operating within ethnic minority border regions. Utilizing grounded theory methodology, data were collected through semi-structu

Assessment of Abilities of Gastroenterology Fellows to Provide Information to Patients With Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patient education is critical in ensuring patient compliance and good health outcomes. Fellows must be able to effectively communicate with their patients, delivering enough information for the patient to understand their medical problem and maximize patient compliance. We created an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) with 4 liver disease cases to assess fellows' knowledge and ability to inform standardized patients (SPs) about their clinical condition. METHODS: We developed 4 cases highlighting different aspects of liver disease and created a 4-station OSCE:
