DSM-5 Trichotillomania: Perception of Adults With Trichotillomania After Psychosocial Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Trichotillomania (TTM) is associated with significant embarrassment and is viewed negatively by others. A potentially important outcome variable that is often overlooked in treatment for TTM is appearance and social perception. METHOD: The present study tested whether participants in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of psychotherapy for TTM are viewed more positively by others. All participants in the trial were photographed at baseline and posttreatment. Three treatment responders and three treatment nonresponders were selected randomly for the present study. Several healthy co

Differential experiences of discrimination among ethnoracially diverse persons experiencing mental illness and homelessness.

BACKGROUND: This mixed methods study explored the characteristics of and experiences with perceived discrimination in an ethnically diverse urban sample of adults experiencing homelessness and mental illness. METHODS: Data were collected in Toronto, Ontario, as part of a 4-year national randomized field trial of the Housing First treatment model. Rates of perceived discrimination were captured from survey questions regarding perceived discrimination among 231 ethnoracially diverse participants with moderate mental health needs. The qualitative component included thirty six in-depth interviews

Prefrontal cortex activity during the discrimination of relative distance.

To compare with our previous findings on relative-duration discrimination, we studied prefrontal cortex activity as monkeys performed a relative-distance discrimination task. We wanted to know whether the same parts of the prefrontal cortex compare durations and distances and, if so, whether they use similar mechanisms. Two stimuli appeared sequentially on a video screen, one above a fixed reference point, the other below it by a different distance. After a delay period, the same two stimuli reappeared (as choice stimuli), and the monkeys' task was to choose the one that had appeared farther f

Mitigation strategies for pandemic influenza A: balancing conflicting policy objectives.

Mitigation of a severe influenza pandemic can be achieved using a range of interventions to reduce transmission. Interventions can reduce the impact of an outbreak and buy time until vaccines are developed, but they may have high social and economic costs. The non-linear effect on the epidemic dynamics means that suitable strategies crucially depend on the precise aim of the intervention. National pandemic influenza plans rarely contain clear statements of policy objectives or prioritization of potentially conflicting aims, such as minimizing mortality (depending on the severity of a pandemic)

Adverse childhood experiences and mental health of sexual and gender minorities in Canada, USA, and Japan.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minorities have an increased risk for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and worsening mental health. However, cross-country research on varying levels of social acceptance remains limited. We compared the impact of sexual and gender minority status on ACEs and poor mental health between Canada, USA, and Japan. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 50,628 adults in 2022. Sexual and gender minority individuals included those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or non-binary. Poor mental health was defined as experiencing not good mental he

Recovery of lost face of burn patients, perceived changes, and coping strategies in the rehabilitation stage.

BACKGROUND: Although burn is a highly traumatic experience, little has been reported on the perception of the individual burn patient in the Chinese cultural context. For developing more culturally sensitive rehabilitation strategies for burn survivors, the present study was conducted to elucidate their perceived changes and to construct a theoretical model of their subjective experience and coping strategies. METHODS: Data were collected from a burn center in China in 2013. Fifteen patients recruited via a theoretical sampling method participated in semi-structured, face-to-face interviews.

Differences in attributions of mental illness and social distance for portrayals of four mental disorders.

For individuals with mental illness, others' perceptions of mental illness often limit integration into communities. Perceptions of mental illness manifest as social stigma in the form of social distance and may depend on individuals' attributions of the origins of mental illness. 180 university students completed a survey on attribution of mental illness and social distance across several disorders (psychiatric and physical). Participants indicated greater social distance for severe mental illness (i.e., schizophrenia) than less severe mental illness and physical illness. More desire for soci

Dissociable salience and default mode network modulation in generalized anxiety disorder: a connectome-wide association study.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder experiencing psychological and somatic symptoms. Here, we explored the link between the individual variation in functional connectome and anxiety symptoms, especially psychological and somatic dimensions, which remains unknown. In a sample of 118 GAD patients and matched 85 healthy controls (HCs), we used multivariate distance-based matrix regression to examine the relationship between resting-state functional connectivity (FC) and the severity of anxiety. We identified multiple hub regions belonging to salience network (SN) and d

Monitoring the well-being of vulnerable transit riders using machine learning based sentiment analysis and social media: Lessons from COVID-19.

Using open-source data, we show that despite significant reductions in global public transit during the COVID-19 pandemic, ∼20% of ridership continues during social distancing measures. Current urban transport data collection methods do not account for the distinct behavioural and psychological experiences of the population. Therefore, little is known about the travel experience of vulnerable citizens that continue to rely on public transit and their concerns over risk, safety and other stressors that could negatively affect their health and well-being. We develop a machine learning approach t

Revealing the spatiotemporal characteristics of the general public's panic levels during the pandemic crisis in China.

The existing crisis management research mostly reveals the patterns of the public's panic levels from the perspectives of public management, sociology, and psychology, only a few studies have revealed the spatiotemporal characteristics. Therefore, this study investigates the spatial distribution and temporal patterns and influencing factors on the general public's panic levels using the Baidu Index data from a geographic perspective. The results show that: (1) The public's panic levels were significantly correlated with the spatial distance between the epicenter and the region of investigation

Lived experiences of Ugandan women who had recovered from a clinical diagnosis of postpartum depression: a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression affects a significant proportion of women of childbearing age. The birth of a newborn baby is normally considered a joyful event, inhibiting mothers from expressing their depressive feelings. If the condition is not well understood and managed, mothers with postpartum depression are likely to experience suicidal ideation or even commit suicide. This study explored lived experiences of women who had recovered from a clinical diagnosis of postpartum depression in southwestern Uganda. METHODS: This phenomenological study adopted the explorative approach through

Political Imprisonment and Adult Functioning: A Life Event History Analysis of Palestinians.

Political imprisonment is a traumatic event, often accompanied by torture and deprivation. This study explores the association of political imprisonment between 1987 and 2011 with political, economic, community, psychological, physical, and family functioning in a population-based sample of Palestinian men ages 32-43 years (N = 884) derived from a dataset collected in 2011. Twenty-six percent (n = 233) had been politically imprisoned. Men imprisoned between 1987 and 2005 reported functioning as well as never-imprisoned men in most domains, suggesting that men imprisoned as youth have moved for

Direct and moderating effects of personality on stigma towards mental illness.

BACKGROUND: While many studies have explored the concept and correlates of stigma towards individuals with mental illness, few have investigated the role of personality in this process. In the current study, we firstly examined the relationship between personality and stigma towards mental illness; and then explored the moderating effects of personality traits on the relationship between contact experience/s and stigma. METHODS: Participants were recruited from public medical (N = 502) and nursing schools (N = 500) from April to September 2016 in Singapore for this cross-sectional survey, and

Childhood emotional maltreatment severity is associated with dorsal medial prefrontal cortex responsivity to social exclusion in young adults.

Children who have experienced chronic parental rejection and exclusion during childhood, as is the case in childhood emotional maltreatment, may become especially sensitive to social exclusion. This study investigated the neural and emotional responses to social exclusion (with the Cyberball task) in young adults reporting childhood emotional maltreatment. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated brain responses and self-reported distress to social exclusion in 46 young adult patients and healthy controls (mean age = 19.2±2.16) reporting low to extreme childhood emotional m
