Safety monitoring in bevacizumab (Avastin) treatment: retinal function assessed by psychophysical (visual fields, colour vision) and electrophysiological (ERG/EOG) tests in two subgroups of patients.

BACKGROUND: Bevacizumab (Avastin) has been used as off-label treatment for the specific inhibition of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Although only intravenous administration of the drug is approved in combination therapy of colorectal carcinoma, promising short-term results have been reported about its intravitreal administration. However, VEGF is also known to exhibit neurotrophic capabilities. Therefore, blockage of all VEGF isoforms by bevacizumab could induce toxic effects. Missing randomized controlled studies and unclear long-term risks require further evaluation. METHOD

Japanese Rice Wine can reduce psychophysical stress-induced depression-like behaviors and Fos expression in the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis evoked by masseter muscle injury in the rats.

We determined if Japanese Rice Wine (Sake) had inhibitory effects on stress-induced enhancement of masseter muscle (MM) nociception in the rats. Male rats were subjected to the repeated forced swim stress (FS) or sham conditionings from Day -3 to -1. Daily administration of Sake or saline was conducted after each stress conditioning. At Day 0 the number of Fos positive cells, a marker for neural activity, was quantified at the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc) region by MM injury with formalin. FS increased MM-evoked Fos expression in the Vc region, which was inhibited by Sake compared to sa

Olfactory event-related potential in patients with rhinosinusitis-induced olfactory dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory disorders are a common syndrome in the rhinology clinic. Olfactory event-related potential (OERP) has been considered as an important alternative method to evaluate olfactory function. The aim of this study was to find the consistency of OERP and the psychophysics olfactory test (T&T olfactometry assessment) in rhinosinusitis patients with or without nasal polyposis. METHODS: Both the psychophysics olfactory test and the OERP were performed in all patients before functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Detailed information including demographic, comorbidity, subjecti…

Daily administration of Sake Lees (Sake Kasu) reduced psychophysical stress-induced hyperalgesia and Fos responses in the lumbar spinal dorsal horn evoked by noxious stimulation to the hindpaw in the rats.

We tested whether Sake Lees (SL) had inhibitory effects on hyperalgesia in the hindpaw under psychophysical stress conditions. Male rats were subjected to repeated forced swim stress treatments (FST) from Day -3 to Day -1. Intraperiotoneal administration of SL which contained low concentration of ethanol (SLX) was conducted after each FST. On Day 0, formalin-evoked licking behaviors and Fos responses in the lumbar spinal cord (DH) and several areas within the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) were quantified as nociceptive responses. FST-induced hyperalgesia in the hindpaw was prevented by re

The Impact of Alzheimer's Disease on the Resting State Functional Connectivity of Brain Regions Modulating Pain: A Cross Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: It is currently unknown why people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) receive less pain medication and report pain less frequently. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of AD on thermal psychophysics and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) among sensory, affective, descending modulatory, and default mode structures. METHODS: Controls (n = 23, 13 = female) and age-matched people with AD (n = 23, 13 = females) underwent psychophysical testing to rate perceptions of warmth, mild, and moderate pain and then completed resting-state fMRI. Between groups …

The impact of spatial frequency on hierarchical category representation in macaque temporal cortex.

Objects are recognized in three hierarchical levels: superordinate, mid-level, and subordinate. Psychophysics shows that mid-level categories and low spatial frequency (LSF) information are rapidly recognized. However, the interaction between spatial frequency (SF) and abstraction is not well understood. To address this, we examine neural responses in the inferior temporal cortex and superior temporal sulcus of two male macaque monkeys. Our findings reveal that mid-level categories are well represented at both LSF and high SF (HSF), suggesting robust mid-level boundary maps in these areas, una…

Retinal sensitivity and adaptation in pediatric patients.

A two-alternative forced-choice preferential looking psychophysical procedure was used to measure dark-adapted thresholds of 79 patients whose medical and ophthalmological conditions raised the possibility of scotopic retinal disorders. The average dark-adapted threshold first obtained from 48 patients, who eventually manifested diseases affecting the scotopic retina, was higher than the average threshold of the 31 patients without scotopic disease. Among the 48 patients with scotopic disease, most (40 out of 48) had abnormal electroretinographic b-wave amplitudes; in 23 scotopic b-waves were

Duration effects on detection cues in simultaneous masking: Analysis using decision variable correlationa).

Experiments involving the detection of a tone presented in noise form the basis of psychophysical estimates of auditory frequency selectivity. These estimates are central to theories of hearing and to models/algorithms for hearing aid fitting, automatic speech recognition, and digital audio compression. Despite widespread application of tone-in-noise experiments, cues used by listeners to detect the tone are debated. This study adopts a molecular psychophysics approach-decision variable correlation-to evaluate whether trial-by-trial responses are consistent with candidate decision variables, i…

Quantifying the implications of nonlinear cochlear tuning for auditory-filter estimates.

The relation between auditory filters estimated from psychophysical methods and peripheral tuning was evaluated using a computational auditory-nerve (AN) model that included many of the response properties associated with nonlinear cochlear tuning. The phenomenological AN model included the effects of dynamic level-dependent tuning, compression, and suppression on the responses of high-, medium-, and low-spontaneous-rate AN fibers. Signal detection theory was used to evaluate psychophysical performance limits imposed by the random nature of AN discharges and by random-noise stimuli. The power-

Congenital optic disc deformities. A clinical approach.

Different kinds of optic disc deformities are considered in this paper. These optic disc deformities include the tilted disc, the morning glory syndrome, the optic pit and the typical coloboma. All of these optic nerve deformities are probably typical and atypical optic disc colobomas. A clinical approach of these typical and atypical colobomas included different tests: angiography, electrophysiology and psychophysics. The genetic characteristics of these colobomas are considered.

A comparative study of methods for establishing load handling capabilities.

There has been much effort in recent years to quantify manual handling capabilities. Four main techniques have been used to this end; biomechanical modelling; the measurement of intra-abdominal pressure; psychophysics; and metabolic/physiological criteria. The aim of this study was to compare quantitatively the data produced from the first three techniques. The comparisons were limited to bimanual, sagittal plane lifting, which of all manual handling activities has been studied the most comprehensively, except that pushing and pulling data were compared from the psychophysics and intra-abdomin…

Dioptric blur is not fully reflected by VEP-based visual acuity estimates.

PURPOSE: Objective estimation of visual acuity (VA) based on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) has become an established technique for cases where psychophysical VA might be unreliable. Refractive errors and improper accommodation could undesirably affect the outcome of VA measurements. Consequently, it is of interest whether a VA reduction due to dioptric blur is reflected by VEP-based estimation of VA. METHODS: We degraded vision in 19 participants to nearly 1.0 logMAR by using either plus lenses or a filter that creates Gaussian blur. For both types of degradation, we compared the outcomes o

Luminance integration occurs in retinal coordinates during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Active vision relies on different forms of eye movements that require the usage of different spatial coordinate systems for successful vision. This is often overlooked in visual psychophysics, when tasks are performed under fixation only, inherently confounding retinal and real-world coordinates. Here we investigated whether the psychophysical principle of luminance integration across time generalizes to smooth pursuit eye movements and in which spatial coordinate system integration operates. In Experiment 1, participants smoothly tracked a moving object, and two brief liminal luminance target…

Geomagnetic field detection in rodents.

In addition to behavioral evidence for the detection of "earth-strength" magnetic fields (MF) by rodents, recent investigations have revealed that electrophysiological and biochemical responses to MF occur in the pineal organ and retina of rodents. In addition, ferrimagnetic deposits have been identified in the ethmoidal regions of the rodent skull. These findings point to a new sensory phenomenon, which interfaces with many fields of biology, including neuroscience, psychophysics, behavioral ecology, chronobiology and sensory physiology.

Intranasal Trigeminal Function in Aging Adults.

BACKGROUND: Intranasal trigeminal function is important in detecting environmental stimuli. The impact of age-associated chemosensory dysfunction upon taste and olfaction is well described, but an understanding of trigeminal loss (chemesthesis) is lacking. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to characterize trigeminal function in a cohort of older adults and explore potential impacts. METHODS: Twenty-eight participants over 50 years of age were recruited from the community as part of an aging cohort study. This nested cohort completed chemosensory questionnaires, patient-reported outcome m

Cortical specialization for processing first- and second-order motion.

Distinct mechanisms underlying the visual perception of luminance- (first-order) and contrast-defined (second-order) motion have been proposed from electrophysiological, human psychophysical and neurological studies; however a cortical specialization for these mechanisms has proven elusive. Here human brain imaging combined with psychophysical methods was used to assess cortical specializations for processing these two kinds of motion. A common stimulus construction was employed, controlling for differences in spatial and temporal properties, psychophysical performance and attention. Distinct

Temporal summation of the acoustic reflex in normal and sensorineural hearing-impaired ears.

Psychophysical and acoustic reflex temporal summation measures were obtained on normal-hearing and sensorineural hearing-impaired persons. Bursts of one-third octave noise with center frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz and durations of 15, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 300 msec were used as stimuli. Reflexes were obtained using an acoustic impedance measuring technique. Results demonstrated that the duration of the noise stimuli had a profound effect on the acoustic reflex response and that the ear with Ménière's disease was clearly distinguishable from the normal ear by both psychophysical a

Visual mechanisms for the analysis of spatial pattern.

After a brief outline of the structure and electrophysiology of the normal visual pathways, the responses, as revealed by psychophysical studies, of the visual system to spatially and temporally varying stimuli are reviewed. An appropriate network model, involving two sequentially organized classes of visual channel, is presented. Examples are given in which the psychophysical methods developed to analyse the normal visual pathways are applied to cases in which these pathways are defective (amblyopia, albinism, hemianopia, parietal cortical lesion, inhibitory central colour vision defect).
