Social Isolation, Loneliness, Social Support and Psychophysiological Stress Response in Older Men and Women.

BACKGROUND: Social relationship factors have been linked with cardiovascular health in older adulthood, and epidemiological studies indicate that the association may vary for different constructs of social relationships. This study aims to investigate associations between three social relationship measurements including loneliness, social isolation, and social support and psychophysiological stress response among older adults, with a focus on gender differences. METHODS: Ninety older adults (34 males, mean age ± SD = 66.31 ± 5.43) completed measures of social relationships and two stress-indu

Psychophysiological changes during breast cancer treatment: a longitudinal analysis of subjective and objective indicators.

BACKGROUND: Advances in early detection and treatment of breast cancer have led to improved survival rates, shifting attention toward the physical and psychological consequences of treatment. Adjuvant therapies are frequently associated with fatigue, reduced quality of life, sleep disturbances, and psychological distress, yet longitudinal data capturing changes in both subjective and objective health indicators during treatment remain limited. The present study aimed to examine changes in selected psychophysiological characteristics in breast cancer patients from diagnosis through completion o

Differential psychophysiological responses associated with decision-making in children from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

This study examined how socioeconomic status (SES) influences on decision-making processing. The roles of anticipatory/outcome-related cardiac activity and awareness of task contingencies were also assessed. One hundred twelve children (Mage = 5.83, SDage = 0.32; 52.7% female, 51.8% low-SES; data collected October-December 2018 and April-December 2019) performed the Children's Gambling Task, while heart rate activity was recorded. Awareness of gain/loss contingencies was assessed after completing the task. Distinct decision-making strategies emerged among low and middle/high-SES children. Desp

Different psychophysiological and clinical symptoms are linked to affective versus sensory vicarious pain experiences.

For some people, seeing pain in others triggers a pain-like experience in themselves: these experiences can either be described in sensory terms and localized to specific body parts (sensory-localized, or S/L) or in affective terms and nonlocalized or whole-body experiences (affective-general, or A/G). In two studies, it is shown that these are linked to different clinical and psychophysiological profiles relative to controls. Study 1 shows that the A/G profile is linked to symptoms of Blood-Injection-Injury Phobia whereas the S/L profile shows some tendency toward eating disorders. Study 2 sh

Success of in vitro fertilization and its association with the levels of psychophysiological stress before and during the treatment.

Despite the advance of assisted reproduction, high rates of failure in treatment are still observed. Herein, we investigated how the psychophysiological stress profiles of patients can modulate the in vitro fertilization treatment (IVF) outcome. The women who had failure in IVF (n = 13; 65%) had higher baseline salivary cortisol awakening response and anxiety-state during treatment than patients who became pregnant (n = 7; 35%). Patients with major stress levels and religious coping style showed lower social support, which was correlated with higher anxiety. Therefore, we appointed stress modu

A Psychophysiological and Behavioural Study of Slot Machine Near-Misses Using Immersive Virtual Reality.

During slot machine gambling, near-miss outcomes occur when the final winning icon lands one position off the pay-line. To understand how near-misses promote gambling behaviour in healthy populations, autonomic arousal is often used to index outcome response valence. Findings remain equivocal, possibly owing to the limited ecological validity of computer simulations. Relevant psychological traits, such as impulsivity, which increase the risk of problem gambling, are often not examined. Here, we used immersive virtual reality (VR) to investigate near-miss-induced changes in physiological arousa

The Heat Is On: Effects of Synchronous Music on Psychophysiological Parameters and Running Performance in Hot and Humid Conditions.

Running in high heat and humidity increases psychophysiological strain, which typically impairs running performance. Listening to synchronous music has been shown to provide psychophysiological benefits, which may enhance running performance. The present randomized, crossover study examined effects of listening to synchronous music on psychophysiological parameters and running performance in hot and humid conditions. Twelve male runners (21.7 ± 2.2 y; 166.17 ± 7.18 cm; 60.32 ± 9.52 kg; 59.29 ± 5.95 ml kg-1 min-1) completed two running trials in simulated conditions (31°C and 70% humidity) with

Biological mechanism of post-herpetic neuralgia: Evidence from multiple patho-psychophysiological measures.

BACKGROUND: Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), which develops after the resolution of a herpes zoster eruption, is an exceptionally drug-resistant neuropathic pain. The unsatisfactory management of PHN partly results from the difficulty in dissecting out its contributing factors due to the complexity of PHN mechanism. METHODS: Here, to elaborate our understanding of the PHN mechanism and to establish a basis for effective therapeutic strategies, we comprehensively investigated the contributions of multiple factors to PHN severity. RESULTS: Based on the comparison of somatosensory detection thres

Psychophysiological classification and experiment study for spontaneous EEG based on two novel mental tasks.

BACKGROUND: Study of imagination offers a perfect setting for study of a large variety of states of consciousness. OBJECTIVE: Here, we studied the characteristics of two electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns evoked by two different imaginary tasks and evaluated the binary classification performance. METHODS: Fifteen individuals (11 male and 4 female, age range of 22 to 33) participated in five sessions of 32-channel EEG recordings. Only by analyzing the subjects' output EEG signals from the central parieto-occipital region of PZ electrode, under the circumstances of consciousness of relaxat

A reward-centred model of anorexia nervosa: a focussed narrative review of the neurological and psychophysiological literature.

This focussed narrative review examines neurobiological and psychophysiological evidence supporting a role for altered reward processes in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). In AN, there does not appear to be a generalised inability to experience reward. Rather, data suggest that a reluctance to gain weight leads to an aversive appraisal of food- and taste-related stimuli. As a result, cues compatible with this aberrant mode of thinking become rewarding for the individual. Evidence also suggests that attribution of motivational salience to such cues promotes anorectic be

Psychophysiological responses in experienced firefighters undertaking repeated self-contained breathing apparatus tasks.

In order to safely and effectively extinguish fires and rescue life, firefighters are required to routinely wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), yet little is known about the specific physiological and psychological demands associated with repeated exposure to tasks that require SCBA. A total of 12 experienced firefighters took part in a series of commonly encountered SCBA activities: free search, guideline search and live firefighting tasks under room temperature (∼20°C) and extreme heat (∼180°C) conditions to assess changes in heart rate, blood pressure, mood, perceived workload a

A psychophysiological investigation of threat and reward sensitivity in individuals with panic disorder and/or major depressive disorder.

Heightened sensitivity to threat and reduced sensitivity to reward are potential mechanisms of dysfunction in anxiety and depressive disorders, respectively. However, few studies have simultaneously examined whether these mechanisms are unique or common to these disorders. In this study, sensitivity to predictable and unpredictable threat (measured by startle response during threat anticipation) and sensitivity to reward (measured by frontal electroencephalographic [EEG] asymmetry during reward anticipation) were assessed in 4 groups (N = 191): those with (1) panic disorder (PD) without a life

Measures of psychophysiological arousal among resettled traumatized Iraqi refugees seeking psychological treatment.

Resettled refugees living in Western countries frequently report high levels of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. This study sought to measure levels of physiological arousal in a group of resettled Iraqi refugees in Australia receiving psychological treatment. A continuous recording of electrocardiogram (ECG) data was used to examine baseline heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in refugees (n = 25) and healthy age- and sex-matched controls (n = 23). Descriptively, PTSD (48%) was the most commonly noted disorder followed equally by major depressive episode (36%)

Effects of stressor controllability on psychophysiological, cognitive and behavioural responses in patients with major depression and dysthymia.

BACKGROUND: The experience of uncontrollability and helplessness in the face of stressful life events is regarded as an important determinant in the development and maintenance of depression. The inability to successfully deal with stressors might be linked to dysfunctional prefrontal functioning. We assessed cognitive, behavioural and physiological effects of stressor uncontrollability in depressed and healthy individuals. In addition, relationships between altered cortical processing and cognitive vulnerability traits of depression were analysed. METHOD: A total of 26 unmedicated depressed

Cardiovascular reactivity to a naturally occurring stressor: development and psychometric evaluation of a psychophysiological assessment procedure.

Three studies were conducted to examine the feasibility, reactive effects of assessment, stability, sampling parameters, and sensitivity of an assessment procedure designed to measure cardiovascular responses to a discrete, naturally occurring, and replicatable stressor--university course examinations. Undergraduate students monitored their blood pressure and heart rate several times during one or two classroom examinations and for several class sessions preceding each examination. Classroom examinations were generally associated with significant increases in subjective measures of distress an

A complex experimental assessment for objective description of hierarchical psychophysiological behavior as human regulatory phenotype.

For the objective and valid identification of different human regulatory phenotypes it should be useful to analyze the behavior of different regulatory subsystems (Anochin 1976) in one multivariate design. Therefore in a DARA supported project a fully computerized and reliable laboratory assessment was developed and tested. We used a set of electrophysiological parameters that should indicate the activity of different functional regulation systems on different "behavioral levels". Skin conductance, skin temperature and voice pitch were used as indicators of sympathico-parasympathical activity.
