Limbic response to psychosocial stress in schizotypy: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Psychological stress causes dopamine release in the striatum and is thought to play a role in susceptibility to psychotic illness. Previous work suggests that an elevated dopaminergic response to stress may index vulnerability to psychosis in certain individuals. With functional magnetic resonance imaging, we measured stress-induced changes in brain activity in healthy individuals at elevated risk of developing psychosis. Participants were 15 controls and 25 psychometric schizotypes: 12 with positive symptom schizotypy (perceptual aberrations) and 13 with negative symptom schizotypy (physical

The effect of two antidiarrhoeal drugs on the psychosocial adjustment to illness in chronic functional diarrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Chronic functional diarrhea is an embarrassing symptom, causing the impairment of the quality of life. AIM: We looked for the effect of two antidiarrheal drugs, diosmectite and loperamide on the psychosocial adjustment to illness, a predictor for the health-related quality of life, in chronic functional diarrhea. METHODS: Prospective controlled randomized trial including 50 consecutive patients with chronic functional diarrhea. They received either diosmectite 3 g b.i.d (n=25, 11M/14F, age 43+/-12 years) or loperamide 2 mg b.i.d. (n=25, 12M/13F, 47+/-11 years) for 2 weeks. Diarrh

Heterogeneity of symptom pattern, psychosocial factors, and pathophysiological mechanisms in severe functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Categorization of functional dyspepsia into subgroups is based on expert opinion according to (dominant) symptoms or on underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. We used an evidence-based approach to the determination of subtypes of functional dyspepsia. METHODS: Consecutive functional dyspepsia patients were recruited from a tertiary referral center. The following were performed: (1) exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of symptom patterns in a large group of patients with functional dyspepsia; (2) external validation of these factors by the determinati

Pupil injury risks as a function of physical and psychosocial environmental problems experienced at school.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate relations between physical and psychosocial environmental problems in schools, as perceived by school principals, and injuries among pupils. METHOD: Proportionate injury ratios (PIRs) were computed for 77 public sector Swedish schools (33,248 pupils), and divided into four classes based on types of environmental problems reported. Sports related injuries, injuries during recesses, and violence related injuries were considered. RESULTS: The schools reporting psychosocial problems (9.1% of schools and 7.3% of pupils) had more injuries than expected by chance than all

Traumatic Brain Injury in Those With Preexisting Disability: Prevalence, Characteristics, and Psychosocial Function.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence of incident traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness (traumatic brain injury [TBI] with loss of consciousness [LOC]) among a cohort of individuals with preexisting disabilities. To examine age at first TBI with LOC and number of TBI with LOC. To identify whether TBI with LOC was associated with type of preexisting primary disability and age of disability onset. We also compared psychosocial function between those with and without TBI with LOC. SETTING: 2023/2024 National Survey on Health and Disability (NSHD). PARTICIPANTS: Adults aged ≥18 years

Associations between psychosocial stress, child's anxiety, and lung function in mid-childhood.

BACKGROUND: Reducing the risk of respiratory disease during the plastic stages of lung development could have long-term health impacts. Psychosocial stress has been previously linked to adverse childhood respiratory outcomes, but the influence of child's anxiety and sex differences has not been completely elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association among maternal stress, child anxiety, and lung function in children and to explore differences by sex. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses included 294 mother-child pairs from the Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, Environment and Socia

Migraine and balance impairment: Influence of subdiagnosis, otoneurological function, falls, and psychosocial factors.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the balance sensory organization among patients with migraine, considering the influence of migraine subdiagnosis, otoneurological function, falls, and psychosocial factors. BACKGROUND: Migraine has been associated with vestibular symptoms and balance dysfunction; however, neither comprehensive balance assessment nor associated factors for greater impairment have been addressed thus far. METHODS: Patients from a tertiary headache clinic with a diagnosis of episodic migraine with aura (MWA), without aura (MWoA), and chronic migraine (CM) were included for this cross-secti

Encouragement to Increase the Use of Psychosocial Skills in the Diagnosis and Therapy of Patients With Functional Dysphonia.

Clinicians believe that psychosocial factors play a causal role in the etiology of many forms of functional dysphonia (FD). But for decades, all attempts to confirm such causation have failed. This paper aims to show the logic of this failure, to discuss the possibilities of employing psychology in therapy nonetheless, and to encourage clinicians to use their psychosocial knowledge and skills. The failure to confirm psychic and social factors as causal in the etiology of FD is basically a consequence of a principal shortcoming of evidence-based medicine (EBM). As the gold standard for validity

Psychosocial and metabolic function by smoking status in individuals with binge eating disorder and obesity.

Individuals with binge eating disorder (BED) report smoking to control appetite and weight. Smoking in BED is associated with increased risk for comorbid psychiatric disorders, but its impact on psychosocial functioning and metabolic function has not been evaluated. Participants were 429 treatment-seeking adults (72.4% women; mean age 46.2±11.0years old) with BED comorbid with obesity. Participants were categorized into current smokers (n=66), former smokers (n=145), and never smokers (n=218). Smoking status was unrelated to most historical eating/weight variables and to current eating disorde…

Psychosocial distress is associated with abnormal gastric myoelectrical activity in patients with functional dyspepsia.

OBJECTIVE: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a heterogeneous and loosely defined clinical syndrome that is characterized by persistent or recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort centered in the upper abdomen without any identifiable structural or biochemical basis. Gastric myoelectrical activity in functional dyspepsia patients with gastric reddish streaks as a subgroup has not previously been investigated and the potential role of psychosocial distress in the genesis of gastric dysrhythmia in patients with FD is unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Electrogastrography was performed in 45 patients with F

Health, functional capacity, health behaviour, psychosocial factors and falling in old age.

This study was done to investigate health, functional capacity, health behaviour and psychosocial factors associated with the occurrence of falls leading to medical treatment in elderly Finns (> or = 65 yrs). An unmatched case-control study was performed in the Town of Pori, Western Finland during the 12 months from September 1987 to August 1988. The series consisted of 380 fallers who sought medical treatment and 342 elderly control subjects selected randomly from the population register. Logistic regression analysis showed falls in the home-dwelling men to be associated with high age, high w

Feasibility and tolerability of group cognitive behavioral therapy on improving functioning and managing craving and psychosocial factors among incarcerated women with methamphetamine use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) has risen among women globally and is disproportionately higher in prisons. In Indonesia, correctional facilities still lack any structured and evidence-based psychological therapy. To address this gap, we developed the Indonesia Substance Use Reduction for Female Therapy (Indo-SURFT). METHODS: A single-arm unblinded design with a 3-month follow-up was conducted among incarcerated women with MUD. Participants completed 12 sessions over six weeks. Assessments included user perception ratings, Addiction Severity Index (ASI), Visual Analog Scale f
