Differences in the symptom profile of methamphetamine-related psychosis and primary psychotic disorders.

We examined the lifetime experience of hallucinations and delusions associated with transient methamphetamine-related psychosis (MAP), persistent MAP and primary psychosis among a cohort of dependent methamphetamine users. Participants were classified as having (a) no current psychotic symptoms, (n=110); (b) psychotic symptoms only when using methamphetamine (transient MAP, n=85); (c) psychotic symptoms both when using methamphetamine and when abstaining from methamphetamine (persistent MAP, n=37), or (d) meeting DSM-IV criteria for lifetime schizophrenia or mania (primary psychosis, n=52). Neighborhood Influences on Violent Reoffending Risk in Released Prisoners Diagnosed With Psychotic Disorders.

Released prisoners diagnosed with psychotic disorders have elevated rates of violent reoffending risk and their exposure to adverse neighborhood environments may contribute to this risk. We identified all released sentenced prisoners in Sweden between 2003 and 2013 (n = 47226) and followed them up for a median period of 4.4 years. We identified prisoners who had ever been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder (n = 3782) or prescribed antipsychotics (n = 7366). We examined 3 neighborhood characteristics: income, proportion of welfare recipients, and crime rate. By fitting generalized mixed-effect…

Randomized Controlled Trial of a Healthy Lifestyle Intervention Among Smokers With Psychotic Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: People with severe mental disorders typically experience a range of health problems; consequently, interventions addressing multiple health behaviors may provide an efficient way to tackle this major public health issue. This two-arm randomized controlled trial among people with psychotic disorders examined the efficacy of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) plus either a face-to-face or predominantly telephone delivered intervention for smoking cessation and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction. METHODS: Following baseline assessment and completion of a common, individual…

Command hallucinations and clinical characteristics of suicidality in patients with psychotic spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death among patients with psychotic illnesses. Several researchers have suggested that specific illness symptoms may better predict suicide risk. An ability to identify high-risk patients would aid clinicians in instituting risk-reduction measures to decrease suicidal behavior in this population. METHODS: We examined the association between psychotic symptoms and suicidal behavior among 148 inpatients with psychosis using the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), the Scale for

Serotonin transporter gene polymorphism, childhood trauma, and cognition in patients with psychotic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The functional polymorphism in the promoter region of the SLC6A4/5-HTT serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) has been linked to altered stress response. Carriers of the short (s-) allele have increased negative psychological reactions and stress hormone release compared with carriers of the long (l-) allele, interacting with severe life events including childhood trauma. High stress levels are associated with cognitive impairments in a variety of clinical and experimental studies. Patients with psychotic disorders are characterized both by more childhood traumatic events and abnorma…

Cannabis abuse and severity of psychotic and affective disorders in Israeli psychiatric inpatients.

The influence of cannabis abuse on the severity of existing psychotic and affective symptoms is still unclear. Among 470 consecutively admitted psychotic or affective patients, 54 active (in the previous month) cannabis abusers were detected via urine tests (Sure Step TM kits; Applied Biotech Inc, San Diego, Calif) and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID- IV) questionnaire. In 24 cases, substances other than cannabis were abused; 392 patients were nonabusers. All patients were diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, criteria.

Non-psychotic psychiatric disorders after childbirth: prevalence and comorbidity in a community sample.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal psychiatric morbidity is a frequent and serious complication of childbirth. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and co-occurrence of DSM-IV psychiatric disorders in a community sample of postpartum Spanish mothers. METHODS: A two-phase cross-sectional study was conducted in which all consecutive women attending the routine 6-week postnatal control visit at the Department of Obstetric and Gynecology of a university-affiliated hospital over a one year period were included. In the first phase, 1453 women were screened with the Edinburgh Postnatal De

Prolactin level during 5 years of risperidone treatment in patients with psychotic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate prolactin levels and related side effects in 128 men and 90 women initially treated with risperidone. METHOD: Patients initially treated with risperidone were followed over 5 years, during which 45% were switched to other antipsychotic drugs. RESULTS: Initially, prolactin levels were fivefold the norm in women, and threefold in men. Diagnosis did not affect the prolactin level if adjustment for sex, current age, and age at onset of psychosis was applied. Prolactin levels did not correlate significantly neither with any Positive and Negative Symptom Scale item or sub

Relationship between psychotic disorders in adolescence and criminally violent behaviour. A retrospective examination.

BACKGROUND: The interaction between psychosis and violence in adults is an important area of research receiving attention. To date there is little available data examining this relationship in adolescence. AIMS: To investigate the possible relationships between criminally violent types of behaviour, and psychopathology and social factors, among adolescents suffering from a psychotic disorder. METHOD: A retrospective case note study of 39 in-patients diagnosed as having a psychotic disorder and admitted to one of two adolescent psychiatry units (one secure, one open). Cases were divided into

Revolving Door Phenomenon and Related Factors in Schizophrenia, Bipolar Affective Disorder and Other Psychotic Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic mental illness are frequently hospitalized and discharged from psychiatry wards. This situation is referred to as the "revolving door phenomenon" (RDP). In addition to factors related to the patient and the disease, limited number of beds leading to shortened hospital stay are among the reasons associated with frequent hospitalization. This study aims to compare patients with RDP and patients with single hospitalization in terms of clinical, sociodemographic, and treatment-oriented characteristics in order to evaluate the risk factors causing frequent hospital

Does comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder affect the severity and course of psychotic major depressive disorder?

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are commonly comorbid conditions that result in greater severity, chronicity, and impairment compared with either disorder alone. However, previous research has not systematically explored the potential effects of the psychotic subtyping of MDD and comorbid PTSD. METHOD: The sample in this retrospective case-control study conducted from December 1995 to August 2006 consisted of psychiatric outpatients with DSM-IV-diagnosed psychotic MDD with PTSD, psychotic MDD without PTSD, or nonpsychotic MDD with PTSD pres

Prevalence rate of social anxiety disorder in individuals with a psychotic disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterised as an excessive fear of negative judgment from others and is considered one of the most disabling of the mental ill health conditions. Research findings indicate that it is also a significant issue for individuals diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, with prevalence rates of social anxiety ranging from 8% to 36%. This study was conducted to address the variance of the reported prevalence rates of comorbid SAD amongst individuals with a psychotic disorder diagnosis. Via a systematic review, we collated all available literature on the prevalence of

Trance and Possession Disorder With Dissociative-Psychotic Overlap: A Clinical Case Report.

Trance and possession disorder (TPD) is a complex and culturally influenced condition characterized by alterations in consciousness, identity, and behavior, often posing diagnostic challenges in clinical psychiatry. We report the case of a young woman who presented with a 12-hour history of visual and auditory hallucinations, disorganized speech, and aggressive behavior toward her partner, requiring emergency intervention and physical restraint. Symptoms began with the perception of unusual noises and external presences in her home, reportedly shared by her partner, prompting religious consult

Exploring female sexual offending with the concepts of hypersexuality and atypical psychotic disorder.

Sexual offending is often perceived as predominantly a male behavior. However, due to growing public interest in female criminality, research on female offenders is increasing. Sexual offending can be influenced by various factors, such as hypersexual disorder (HSD), or may be associated with psychiatric conditions like borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this case, a 46-year-old woman was charged with a sexual offense for engaging in sexual intercourse with four underage male adolescents. She had a medical history of mood disorder and alcohol abuse. During her psychiatric evaluation in

Acute Schizophrenia-like Psychotic Disorder Against the Background of COVID-19.

Background and Objectives: Research in this area focuses on acute schizophrenia-like psychotic disorder, as more than half of cases progress to a chronic course, manifesting as schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Research has shown a link between viral infection and the onset of psychosis, and the influence of viruses on the clinical course of the disease is also being studied. Consequently, in cases where this type of psychosis co-occurs with a viral illness, there is a compelling rationale for identifying commonalities in both treatment and outcome. The ongoing global pandemic of COVI
