We report on the light-switch behaviour of two head-to-tail expanded bipyridinium species as a function of their interaction with calf thymus DNA and polynucleotides. In particular, both DNA and polynucleotides containing exclusively adenine or guanine moieties quench the luminescence of the fused expanded bipyridinium species. This behaviour has been rationalized demonstrating that a reductive photoinduced electron transfer process takes place involving both adenine or guanine moieties. Effectiveness was studied of a new drug amyzonum in a complex therapy of mumps in 149 patients versus the group of 177 patients having been treated with conventional methods only. A positive effect was shown of the drug on clinical indices, with the incidence of complications having gotten lower, biochemical indices having returned to normal.

OBJECTIVES: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is notoriously resistant to chemotherapy. The sphingolipid ceramide and its analogs have been demonstrated to exert antitumor activity in many cell types; however, the effectiveness of these analogs has been limited by potency and solubility. An ability of rat thymus lymphocytes to respond to pollen allergens has been found. The lymphocytes were exposed with plasma of pollinosis patients. The subsequent addition of allergens specific for the patient caused the decrease of lymphocyte plasma membrane potential. The decrease was detected by use of potential-sensitive fluorescent probe 4-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium. This newly found effect can be employed for diagnostics of atopic states.

Besulpamide, a newly synthesized compound, has demonstrated significant diuretic activity in rats and dogs, similar to that of chlorthalidone, clopamide and xipamide. Antihypertensive activity of besulpamide is similar to that of hydrochlorothiazide and was demonstrated in rat one-kidney desoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertension.
