Q fever prevention and vaccination.

The simpliest way how to avoid the development and spreading of any infection, including Q fever in extenso, is prevention. The main principles of prevention are: educate the public on sources of infection, appropriately dispose of placenta, birth products, fetal membranes, and aborted fetuses at facilities housing sheep and goats, restrict access to barns and laboratories used in housing potentially infected animals, use only pasteurized milk and milk products, use appropriate procedures for bagging, autoclaving, and washing of laboratory clothing, quarantine imported animals, periodical moni…

Q fever pneumonia: CT findings.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the computed tomographic (CT) features of Q fever pneumonia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the chest radiographs and CT scans obtained in 12 patients, who were selected on the basis of chest CT availability from a group of patients with a definite diagnosis of acute Q fever infection during an 8.5-year period. RESULTS: In all cases, CT depicted lesions indicative of airspace involvement, which was expressed as lobar (n = 3), segmental (n = 3), patchy (n = 3), or a combination of these patterns (n = 3). Involvement of more than one lobe was o…

Q fever outbreak--Germany, 1996.

In May 1996, the Health Department of Marburg-Biedenkopf in Marburg, Hessen, Germany, was notified of a cluster of persons with high and persistent fever who resided in a rural town (Rollshausen [1996 population:300]) and in five surrounding towns approximately 0.5-2.0 miles from Rollshausen, in the district of Lohra. Serologic testing of some patients by local health authorities suggested acute Q fever. In Germany, Q fever is a reportable disease and 27-100 cases are reported annually; during 1995, no cases had been reported from Lohra. In July 1996, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) was invite…

Q fever tricuspid valve endocarditis.

Q fever is a zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. The most frequent clinical expression of the chronic form is a bacterial culture negative aortic or mitral endocarditis. A case of tricuspid valve endocarditis due to C burnetii is described, with a favourable outcome after treatment with doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine.

[Q-fever imported into Norway].

Q fever is an important zoonosis that occurs throughout the world. In contrast to most other European countries, there has been no evidence of endemic Q fever in Norway up to now. The disease is caused by Coxiella burnetii, a rickettsia-like bacterium. Humans are infected mainly by inhalation of contaminated aerosols from cattle, sheep and goats. Clinical manifestations are protean, ranging from asymptomatic infection to life-threatening endocarditis. In this article we present the first four cases of serological proven acute Q fever imported into Norway. The patients were Norwegian tourists w…

Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) pneumonia.

Pneumonia is one manifestation of acute Q fever following infection with Coxiella burnetii. Fever, headache, and myalgia dominate the clinical picture of Q fever pneumonia. Cough is nonproductive and may be absent despite the presence of pneumonia. While in most instances pneumonia results in an illness of mild-to-moderate severity, on occasion it is rapidly progressive and results in respiratory failure. Infection occurs as a result of inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Infected cattle, sheep, and goats are the usual reservoirs for this zoonosis. In some areas, infected parturient cats serv…

Q fever mimicking herpetic encephalitis.

We describe a patient with temporal lobe encephalitis associated with primary Coxiella burnetii infection who presented with CT and MRI findings suggestive of herpes simplex encephalitis and an initial improvement during treatment with acyclovir. Q fever should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients whose manifestations suggest herpes encephalitis.

Q fever in Sokoto, Nigeria.

There is very little information available about the prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in Africa. We obtained blood from 75 Nigerians hospitalized in Sokoto for a variety of acute medical conditions. Their age range was 7 months to 50 years; there were 39 males and 36 females. Antibody titers were determined to phase I and phase II C. burnetii antigens using a microimmunofluorescence test. Thirty-three (44%) had an antibody titer of greater than or equal to 1:8 to phase II C. burnetii. We conclude on the basis of this limited survey that Q fever is common in Nigeria.
