The existence of natural radioactivity in phosphate fertilizers originates from the rock phosphate that is used as a feed stock for the manufacturing of various types of phosphate fertilizers. Gamma ray activity mass concentrations have been determined in phosphate rock and fertilizer samples collected from different fertilizer manufacturing factories and suppliers in Pakistan. In this paper dose estimates are given for internal and external exposure that result, due to radioactive thorium, from the use of the incandescent mantles for gas lanterns. The collective, effective dose equivalent for all users of gas mantles is estimated to be about 100 Sv per annum in the Netherlands. For the population involved (ca. 700,000 persons) this is roughly equivalent to 5% to 10% of the collective dose equivalent associated with exposure to radiation from natural sources. Ureters tolerate radiation well as manifested by the low incidence of injury. However, ureteral injury can occur with high-dose radiation especially when the majority is delivered by radium. Eight such cases are presented. A retrospective study of 100 asymptomatic women treated with radiation for cervical carcinoma over 5 years previously demonstrated only 4 incidences of ureteral injury if dilatation was used as the indicator. Patients treated for breast cancer with breast-conserving surgery and radiotherapy were followed up by physical examination, mammography, and fine needle aspiration ("triple test") at The Norwegian Radium Hospital.
