The acrophysis: a unifying concept for understanding enchondral bone growth and its disorders. II. Abnormal growth.

In order to discuss and illustrate the effects common to normal and abnormal enchondral bone at the physes and at all other growth plates of the developing child, the term "acrophysis" was proposed. Acrophyses include the growth plates of secondary growth centers including carpals and tarsals and apophyses, and the growth plates at the nonphyseal ends of small tubular bones. Abnormalities at acrophyseal sites are analogous to those at the physeal growth plates and their metaphyses. For example, changes relating to the zone of provisional calcification (ZPC) are often important to the demonstra

FROM THE ARCHIVES OF THE ZAGREB ANTIRABIES CLINIC: HOSPITALIZED PERSONS DUE TO ANIMAL BITES FROM 2007 TO 2021 (PART TWO).

The aim of this paper is to present data on hospitalized patients in Zagreb clinics and hospitals, from 2007 to 2021. This paper is a contin … ommon causes of hospitalization after an animal bite were infectious diseases (cat-scratch disease, rat-bite fever) and severity of wounds, which is comparable to the data available from other countries. There is no statistically significant difference in the frequency of hospitalization between children and adults, while dogs are statistically significantly mor …

Rickettsioses in Europe.

Bacteria of the genera Rickettsia and Orientia (family rickettsiaceae, order rickettsiales) cause rickettsioses worldwide, and are transmitted by lice, fleas, ticks and mites. In Europe, only Rickettsia spp. cause rickettsioses. With improvement of hygiene, the risk of louse-borne rickettsiosis (epidemic typhus) is low in Europe. Nevertheless, recrudescent form of Rickettsia prowazekii infection persists. There could be an epidemic typhus outbreak if a body lice epidemic occurs under unfavorable sanitary conditions. In Europe, endemic typhus or Rickettsia typhi infection, transmitted by rats a

Streptobacillus moniliformis Endocarditis: An Unusual Case of Pulmonary Valve Erosion Resulting in Free Pulmonary Regurgitation and Aneurysm.

Endocarditis is a consideration in the differential diagnosis when masses are seen on echocardiography in a patient with congenital heart disease. We present a case of insidious development of endocarditis caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis in a seven-month-old baby after a rat bite, when the baby was three months of age.

Case report: A fatal case of aortic and mitral valve endocarditis caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) secondary to rat-bite fever (RBF) is rare but potentially lethal. Rapid diagnosis is of utmost prognostic importance. However, the diagnosis of RBF is challenging because Streptobacillus moniliformis does not grow under conventional culture conditions. CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old male without previous cardiac history presented with sudden onset of balance problems and facial palsy. For 2 weeks, he had experienced intermittent fever and myalgia. Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) revealed severe mitral and aortic valve IE with aortic root abscess. T…

Phenotypic and Genotypic Characteristics of Members of the Genus Streptobacillus.

The genus Streptobacillus (S.) remained monotypic for almost 90 years until two new species were recently described. The type species, S. moniliformis, is one of the two etiological agents of rat bite fever, an under-diagnosed, worldwide occurring zoonosis. In a polyphasic approach field isolates and reference strains of S. moniliformis, S. hongkongensis, S. felis as well as divergent isolates were characterized by comparison of molecular data (n = 29) and from the majority also by their physiological as well as proteomic properties (n = 22). Based on growth-independent physiological profiling

Zoonotic Pathogens Associated with Pet and Feeder Murid Rodent Species: A Global Systematic Review.

Background: Pet and feeder rodents are one of the main sources of emerging infectious diseases. These rodents are purchased from pet shops, breeders, and online. Consequently, some of these rodents may subtly transmit diseases as they may be asymptomatic to certain pathogens. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched four academic databases viz. Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus to determine zoonotic pathogens associated with pet and feeder rodents globally. Our searches were performed in R statistical software using the packages "metagear" and "revtool". Results: We f

[The North African plague and Charles Nicolle's theory of infectious diseases].

Many infectious diseases were described in North Africa in 18th-19th centuries by European travellers. Most of them were allegedly imported by new migrant populations coming from sub-Saharan, European or Middle East countries. Plague outbreaks have been described since the Black Death as diseases of the Mediterranean harbours. Charles Nicolle and his collaborators at the Pasteur Institute were witnesses to the extinction of plague and typhus fever in Tunisia. Both could be considered as endemo-epidemic diseases propagated by ancient nomad communities for centuries. Typhus was exported to other

Knowledge and beliefs about malaria transmission and practices for vector control in southern Mexico.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the knowledge and beliefs about malaria transmission and practices for vector control in eight villages on the coastal plain of Chiapas, Mexico. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during May and June 1995 in Chiapas, Mexico. A questionnaire to investigate family structure, knowledge on malaria transmission, preventive measures and attitudes towards seeking treatment was applied to both family heads of a sample of households. Associations were analyzed by estimating odds ratios with confidence intervals and p values, using bivariate and multi

From Silicosis to Systemic Sclerosis: Erasmus Syndrome in a Young Galamseyer-Case Report.

Erasmus syndrome is an uncommon condition marked by the onset of systemic sclerosis (SSc) due to extended exposure to silica. In this case, we highlight the significant health risks associated with silica exposure in artisanal mining (galamsey), leading to the development of Erasmus syndrome. We present the case of a 33-year-old male artisanal miner with a 14-year work history who presented with a 2-year history of recurrent cough, difficulty breathing, and fever. He later developed hypopigmentation and skin thickening on his face, neck, torso, and knees, along with a productive cough and low-

Observations on little known diseases of camels (Camelus dromedarius) in the Horn of Africa.

The camel is a comparatively hardy animal and is less susceptible to many of the diseases that affect other livestock species in the same areas. Despite that, the camel may contract many other diseases, some of which are still unknown. Pastoralists have for centuries herded camels in the arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya, and elsewhere in the Horn of Africa, and they have encountered and named many new diseases. However, the exact causes of many of these illnesses, such as Lahaw-Gaal, Firaanfir, Laaba, Jajabsa and Yudleye remain unknown. This paper presents the observations of pastoralists on

Tularemia in Canada with a focus on Saskatchewan.

Although rare among humans in Canada, tularemia is often endemic in wildlife. The inhabitants of rural areas are especially likely to be exposed to the causative bacterium, Francisella tularensis, through trapping or through the bites of arthropods. Muskrats have replaced rabbits as the principal source of infection, as illustrated by a familial outbreak of oropharyngeal tularemia in Saskatchewan. In humans the disease has six distinct forms and can be asymptomatic, but it generally comes to medical attention as fever, persistent ulcers and enlarged lymph nodes. Serologic tests will confirm th
