Improving Cardiovascular Health Through the Consideration of Social Factors in Genetics and Genomics Research: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) is affected by genetic, social, and genomic factors across the life course, yet little research has focused on the interrelationships among them. An extensive body of work has documented the impact of social determinants of health at both the structural and individual levels on CVH, highlighting pathways in which racism, housing, violence, and neighborhood environments adversely affect CVH and contribute to disparities in cardiovascular disease. Genetic factors have also been identified as contributors to risk for cardiovascular disease. Emerging evidence suggests t

Early Reward Learning and the Origins of Obesity: Food, Non-Food Reward, and Developing Self-Regulation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines infancy as a sensitive period for the development of reward learning and self-regulation and evaluates how early experiences with food and non-food rewards shape obesity risk. We sought to address three questions: how biological susceptibility influences early reward processing, how caregiving practices use food as a reward, and how non-food reinforcement modifies the relative reinforcing value of food (RRVfood) during early development. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent evidence indicates that obesity risk may depend less on absolute food motivation and more on

Preference assessment and reinforcer effectiveness in domestic cats.

Understanding domestic cat (Felis catus) preferences is important for identifying effective reinforcers that can support training, enrichment, and welfare. We assessed preference across three stimulus categories (food, toys, and social interaction) using free-operant assessments with four adult cats in familiar home environments. The primary dependent measure was duration of quadrant engagement with concurrently available stimuli. Within-category assessments evaluated preference among multiple stimuli within each category to identify the most preferred item, and between-category assessments pr

Clinical Efficacy and Psychological Mechanisms of an App-Based Digital Therapeutic for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Current treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) often yield suboptimal outcomes, partly because of insufficient targeting of underlying psychological mechanisms (eg, avoidance reinforcement learning). Mindfulness training (MT) has shown efficacy for anxiety; yet, widespread adoption has been limited, partly because of the difficulty in scaling in-person-based delivery. Digital therapeutics are emerging as potentially viable treatments; however, very few have been empirically validated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to test the efficacy and mechanism of an app-deliv

Status and tasks of today's urodynamics.

The current situation of urodynamics and the ways of improving and reinforcing our investigational and treatment modalities are presented. Correct evaluation of the bladder dysfunction depends on sound evaluation of a patient's history, naked-eye observation and careful urodynamic investigation. The clinical and social significance of the following items is specifically discussed: urinary incontinence of elderly people, clean intermittent catheterization and artificial urethral sphincter.

An evolutionary perspective on the co-occurrence of social anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) commonly co-occurs with, and often precedes, Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). In this paper, we address the relationship between SAD and AUD by considering how natural selection left socially anxious individuals vulnerable to alcohol use, and by addressing the underlying mechanisms. We review research suggesting that social anxiety has evolved for the regulation of behaviors involved in reducing the likelihood or consequences of threats to social status. The management of potential threats to social standing is important considering that these threats can result in red

The neurobiology of psychopathic traits in youths.

Conduct disorder is a childhood behaviour disorder that is characterized by persistent aggressive or antisocial behaviour that disrupts the child's environment and impairs his or her functioning. A proportion of children with conduct disorder have psychopathic traits. Psychopathic traits consist of a callous-unemotional component and an impulsive-antisocial component, which are associated with two core impairments. The first is a reduced empathic response to the distress of other individuals, which primarily reflects reduced amygdala responsiveness to distress cues; the second is deficits in d

Cognitive behavioral treatment to improve adherence to hemodialysis fluid restrictions: a case report.

This case report describes outpatient psychological treatment targeting adherence to fluid restrictions in a hemodialysis patient. The consequences of nonadherence to fluid restrictions in hemodialysis patients range from minor discomfort to increased hospitalizations and mortality rates. In addition, when patients chronically fail to adhere, they may no longer be candidates for kidney transplant. The interventions focused on polydipsia, characterized by excessive fluid intake. The methods involved 11-sessions of individual psychotherapy incorporating strategies including increasing awareness,

Electromyographic feedback in the treatment of bilateral facial paralysis: a case study.

Electromyographic feedback in the treatment of facial paralysis has been shown to be a useful alternative to surgical procedures. In this paper we report on the partial recovery of a 7-year-old patient with congenital bilateral facial paralysis (Moebius syndrome) that had been considered untreatable by medical specialists. Biofeedback of electromyographic activity was provided together with specific instructions, social reinforcement, and exercises that the patient carried out at home. The rehabilitation training lasted 1 year, during which there was a substantial increase in the electromyogra

Limited evidence that reputation-based partner choice facilitates information sharing in humans.

A necessary prerequisite for the accumulation of beneficial knowledge, or 'cumulative cultural evolution', is the sharing of information via social learning. Yet little work in the field of cultural evolution has examined the mechanisms that support information sharing in the face of exploitative information free-riding and information hoarding. We ran a series of online interactive experiments (N = 716) combined with computational reinforcement and social learning models to test whether the mechanism of reputation-based partner choice can effectively support information sharing. Participants

Deterministic dynamics of distributional multi-agent reinforcement learning.

Understanding how cognition shapes behavior across contexts remains a fundamental challenge for many disciplines. In particular, for the optimism heuristic-i.e., the tendency to overweight positive (relative to negative) information-knowledge remains fragmented, with models developed in specific domains in isolation. Here, we present a unifying computational framework by deriving the deterministic dynamics of distributional multi-agent reinforcement learning. Our approach discretizes return distributions through a finite set of neurons, consistent with recent empirical findings on distribution

Escalating demand for learning during adolescence impairs social interaction by hyperactivating midbrain dopamine neurons in young adulthood male mice.

Chronic stress during adolescence is a major risk factor for adult psychiatric disorders, yet the long-term impact of learning-related aversive stress remains poorly understood. This study established an mice model of learning demand stress by escalating the fixed ratio (FR) number of escape responses to foot shocks in a negative reinforcement learning paradigm. Remarkably, mice that performed proficiently (high-susceptible, H-Su) during this aversive learning task in adolescent developed late-onset impairments in social interaction and novel object recognition in young adulthood, whereas poor

Free medial plantar flap connection with a posterior tibial artery flap and its modification for combined dorsal and plantar foot defects - two case reports.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into society has surfaced systemic risks, particularly deep polarization exacerbated by algorithms optimizing for individual engagement. The dominant alignment paradigm, reliant on unilateral control (e.g., RLHF), is ill-suited to address these emergent collective dynamics. This paper proposes a philosophical and computational shift toward symbiotic alignment (SA), moving beyond top-down constraints to a framework of mutual adaptation and co-evolution. We ground SA in collective predictive coding (CPC), reframing human-AI symbiosis as parti

Using the theoretical domains framework to inform strategies to support dietitians undertaking body composition assessments in routine clinical care.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition, sarcopenia and cachexia are clinical wasting syndromes characterised by muscle loss. Systematic monitoring by body composition assessment (BCA) is recommended for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the syndrome(s). This study investigated practices, competency, and attitudes of Australian dietitians regarding BCA, to inform a local implementation process. METHODS: Applying the Action cycle in the Knowledge to Action framework, surveys were distributed to the 26 dietitians of an 800-bed tertiary hospital. The survey assessed barriers and enablers to performing

A model of the development and maintenance of generalized social phobia.

Many factors have been associated with the development and maintenance of generalized social phobia (GSP); however, the ways in which these factors interact with one another to produce and maintain GSP remains unclear. The current paper proposes that Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) can be used to integrate a wide range of factors into a unified and theoretically-driven model of GSP. The paper begins by briefly summarizing research on genetic, temperamental, environmental, and cognitive factors associated with GSP. The next section of the paper provides an overview of RST. A model of the
