Braces and Splints for Common Musculoskeletal Conditions.

Braces and splints can immobilize and protect joints, reduce pain, decrease swelling, and facilitate healing of acute injuries. They are also used for injury prevention and chronic pain reduction, and to alter the function of a joint. The medial unloading (valgus) knee brace is an option for patients with medial knee osteoarthritis, but evidence of long-term benefit is limited. The patellar stabilizing brace helps maintain proper patellar alignment but has mixed results in treating patellofemoral pain syndrome. The patellar tendon strap is effective in treating pain from patellar tendinopathy.

Hamstring muscle strain recurrence and strength performance disorders.

We determined the frequency of strength disorders in 26 athletes with a history of hamstring muscle injury and recurrent strains and discomfort. We also assessed the effectiveness of rehabilitation to correct muscle performance. After concentric and eccentric isokinetic assessment, 18 athletes were found to have strength deficits, as determined by statistically selected cutoffs of peak torque, bilateral differences, and the flexors/quadriceps ratio. The discriminating character of the eccentric trial was demonstrated, combining a preferential eccentric peak torque deficit and a significant red

Gymnastic injuries.

In the past 15 to 20 years gymnastics has become very popular. The increased participation exposes a greater number of athletes to potential injury. The risk of gymnastic injuries seems to be proportional to the level of the athletes; the higher the level of gymnastics, the more hours are spent in practice, with a greater exposure time. With the increased risk in gymnastics, the incidence of acute injuries will also increase, and as the skill level increases, the load during the workout will also increase, providing more opportunity for chronic injuries. As in many sports, the ankle is the mos

The panniculus carnosus muscle: a missing link in the chronicity of heel pressure ulcers?

Chronic and recurring pressure ulcers (PUs) create an unmet need for predictive biomarkers. In this work, we examine the panniculus carnosus, a thin cutaneous muscle, traditionally considered vestigial in humans, and ask whether the panniculus may play a role in the chronicity and reinjury of heel PUs. To determine whether humans have a panniculus muscle layer at the heel, we dissected eight cadavers. To assess the influence of the panniculus layer on PU, we performed computational simulations of supine weight bearing. Finally, we assessed panniculus regeneration in fluorescent mice. Results s

Transparent Conductive Supramolecular Hydrogels with Stimuli-Responsive Properties for On-Demand Dissolvable Diabetic Foot Wound Dressings.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) remain a very considerable health care burden, and their treatment is difficult. Hydrogel-based wound dressings are appealing to provide an optimal environment for wound repair. However, the currently available hydrogel dressings still need surgical or mechanical debridement from the wound, causing reinjury of the newly formed tissues, wound infection, delayed healing time, and personal suffering. Additionally, to meet people's increasing demand, hydrogel wound dressings with improved performance and multifunctionality are urgently required. Here, a new multifunction

The arthroscopic meniscal repair. Techniques and clinical experience.

Conservative meniscal repair should limit resection to only pathologic portions of the meniscus. The periphery of the meniscus is well vascularized, enabling healing of longitudinal tears. Sutures that perforate the meniscus vertically usually lead to stable healing. In arthroscopic meniscal surgery, isolated tears are sutured from within the joint, usually using techniques related to specially developed instrumentation. Our system uses three curved cannulas of various radii and a specific needle of 1.2 mm thickness, and can be operated by one hand while the joint is distracted with an AO/ASIF

Can Symmetry of Single-Leg Vertical Jump Height Represent Normal Lower Limb Biomechanics of Athletes After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction?

BACKGROUND: After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), single-leg horizontal hop distance limb symmetry index (LSI) >90% is recommended as a cutoff point for safe return to sport (RTS). However, athletes after ACLR have abnormal lower limb biomechanics despite an adequate single-leg hop distance LSI, implying that athletes are at high risk of reinjury. Symmetry of single-leg vertical jump height appears to be more difficult to achieve and can be a better representation of knee function than single-leg horizontal hop distance. HYPOTHESIS: Athletes after ACLR with single-leg jump h

A prospective study of risk factors for hamstring injury in Australian football league players.

This study aimed to explore the association between hamstring strength, age and lower limb soft tissue injury history and subsequent hamstring injury among Australian Football League (AFL) players. This prospective cohort study recruited 125 players from three professional AFL teams. Eccentric knee flexor strength was assessed while performing the Nordic hamstring exercise in pre-season, and injury data were collected retrospectively (hamstring, groin, calf, quadriceps and knee), and prospectively (hamstring injuries) for one AFL playing season. Fourteen players (11%) sustained a hamstring inj

A deep learning algorithm for automatic 3D segmentation and quantification of hamstrings musculotendon injury from MRI.

In high-velocity sports, hamstring strain injuries are common causes of missed play and have high rates of reinjury. Evaluating the severity and location of a hamstring strain injury, currently graded by a clinician using a semiqualitative muscle injury classification score (e.g. as one method, British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification - BAMIC) to describe edema presence and location, aids in guiding athlete recovery. In this study, automated artificial intelligence (AI) models were developed and deployed to automatically segment edema, hamstring muscle and tendon structures using T2-weig

Extracellular vesicles modulate key signalling pathways in refractory wound healing.

Chronic wounds are wounds that cannot heal properly due to various factors, such as underlying diseases, infection or reinjury, and improper healing of skin wounds and ulcers can cause a serious economic burden. Numerous studies have shown that extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from stem/progenitor cells promote wound healing, reduce scar formation and have significant advantages over traditional treatment methods. EVs are membranous particles that carry various bioactive molecules from their cellular origins, such as cytokines, nucleic acids, enzymes, lipids and proteins. EVs can mediate c

Less impact absorption at the ankle joint is related to the single-leg landing stability deficit in patients with chronic ankle instability.

Single-leg landing (SLL) stability deficits are common dysfunctions after lateral ankle sprain (LAS), and are associated with reinjury and needs to be addressed. SLL stability deficits could be associated with impact absorption ability. Thus, we evaluated these relationships. We recruited 46 patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) and 64 control patients and measured their kinematics, SLL stability, and impact absorption ability. The SLL stability was evaluated by calculating the anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) and medial-lateral stability index (MLSI). The impact absorption ab

Shoulder rotation strength and overhead shooting speed associated with prior shoulder injury in water polo players.

This study aimed to differentiate peak ball speed during shooting and shoulder rotation strength of the dominant arm between previously injured (PI) and uninjured (UI) water polo players. Nine PI and nine UI players performed 10 shots at 6 m from the goal mouth and three sets of three repetitions of isokinetic shoulder strength tests at 180 degrees/s on a dynamometer. Peak ball speed and shoulder concentric internal rotation (CIR) and eccentric external rotation (EER) peak torque (PT) and total work (TW) normalised to body mass were measured. EER:CIR PT and TW ratios were calculated. All PI ve
