Nonorganic upper airway obstruction.

Two cases of severe dyspnea and stridor with upper airway obstruction of obscure origin are discussed. Complete medical evaluation could identify no organic cause for the symptoms, and functional upper airway obstruction was diagnosed. Treatment with psychotherapy and relaxation techniques was successful. Diagnosis can be made with pulmonary function studies. Flow-volume loops may show a lower inspiratory vital capacity than expiratory vital capacity and a discrepancy between inspiratory flow limitation and airway resistance. It is important to establish a functional etiology to prevent unnece

Effect of Diuretic or Calcium-Channel Blocker Plus Angiotensin-Receptor Blocker on Diastolic Function in Hypertensive Patients.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension increases the risk of left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction, and anti-hypertensive therapy may improve LV relaxation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether combining an angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB) with either hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) or a calcium-channel blocker (CCB) improves LV relaxation in patients with hypertension and diastolic dysfunction. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hypertensive patients who had not achieved their target blood pressure with at least 4 weeks of ARB therapy were randomly assigned to receive either a fixed-dose combination of l

Effects of self-relaxation methods and visual imagery on IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma.

In this study, the effects of a training in relaxation and visual imagery on the intra-ocular pressure (IOP) of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma were investigated. Twenty-three patients, aged 24-69 years, were assigned either to a training group or to a waiting-list control group. The intervention included a basic programme (BP) of standard autogenic relaxation exercises and an advanced programme (AP) in which special exercises in ocular relaxation and imagination of aqueous humour drainage were conducted. IOP was measured before and after each training session. Twenty-four-hour IOP p

[Belching (eructation)].

Belching is a normal physiological function that may occur when ingested air accumulated in the stomach is expelled or when food containing air and gas produced in the gastrointestinal tract is expelled. Excessive belching can cause patients to complain of abdominal discomfort, disturbed daily life activities, decreased quality of life and may be related to various gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia, aerophagia and rumination syndrome. Belching disorders can be classified into aerophagia and unspecified belching disorder according to the Ro

Behavioral treatment of dizziness secondary to benign positional vertigo following head trauma.

Benign positional vertigo (BPV) represents a challenge to rehabilitation due to the subjective nature of the complaint of dizziness, frequent failure of pharmacologic intervention, and complicating psychologic factors. Behavioral therapy was used to treat a 26-year-old woman who complained of debilitating dizzy spells after mild head injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident. During a three-week baseline period before treatment, the patient reported a weekly average of 48 dizzy spells, which prevented participation in independent activities and kept her homebound and psychologically distres

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the impact of relaxation techniques to reduce burden of disease in patients with psychotic disorders.

The role of psychosocial stress as a factor in both the development of psychosis and the exacerbation of acute psychotic episodes is increasingly well understood. Various approaches to stress reduction have been shown to be helpful for psychosis patients, but they are rarely included in guidelines and treatment algorithms. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we examined the effectiveness and potential adverse effects of interventions that specifically aim to reduce stress in psychosis patients. To do so, we systematically searched five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycIN

Patients' Lived Experiences of Spasticity.

Spasticity is an individual, sensory-motor experience that is correlated with nonmotor symptoms of pain, fatigue, and dysesthesia. Patients and clinicians may have different understandings of spasticity. This discrepancy is complicated because spasticity is highly variable depending on the individual and the unique stressors in their environment. Listening to how patients explain their symptoms and what factors make their spasticity better or worse is key to effective symptom management. Good patient-clinician communication leads to applying the correct treatment of each symptom. The use of or

Effectiveness of relaxation techniques for stress management and quality of life improvement in cardiovascular disease and hypertensive patients: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and hypertension are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, significantly affecting quality of life (QoL). Stress, anxiety, and poor psychological well-being often exacerbate these conditions, creating a vicious cycle. Relaxation techniques, including progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and diaphragmatic breathing, assist in contracting and relaxing muscle groups to aid individuals in identifying and reducing physical tension and foster relaxation due to increased parasympathetic nerve activity, resulting in emotional tranq

Diverse learners: learning disabilities and quality of life following mind-body and health education interventions for adults with neurofibromatosis.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis (NF) is associated with low quality-of-life (QoL). Learning disabilities are prevalent among those with NF, further worsening QoL and potentially impacting benefits from mind-body and educational interventions, yet research on this population is scarce. Here, we address this gap by comparing NF patients with and without learning disabilities on QoL at baseline and QoL-related gains following two interventions. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a fully-powered RCT of a mind-body program (Relaxation Response Resiliency Program for NF; 3RP-NF) versus an educational progra

[Possibilities of non-drug treatment for Parkinson's disease].

In this article, non-drug methods of treatment of Parkinson's disease are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the motor symptoms of disease, specifically to gait disorders. Information about objective methods of gait impairment is presented. Own results that confirm the effect of a method of tempo-rhythmical correction of walk in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and vascular parkinsonism as well as a device for assessment of gait parameters developed by the authors are analyzed. The efficacy of other methods of gait correction using external cues, study design and level of evidenc

Psychological treatments for social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: To review the empirical status of psychological treatments for social phobia (SP), commenting both on cognitive-behavioural interventions and on more recent iterations of those approaches. We also review the effective components of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). METHOD: We qualitatively reviewed the empirical literature on the psychological treatment of SP. We include empirical studies, metaanalyses, and recent conference presentations in this review. RESULTS: Cognitive and behavioural interventions for SP appear to be more effective than wait-list controls and supportive th

Active muscular relaxation techniques. Part I. Basic principles and methods.

New treatment methods are being incorporated into chiropractic care. These methods include muscular relaxation techniques which have their origins in physical medicine and osteopathic approaches developed in the late 1940s. They involve active participation by the patient and are, therefore, ideal introductions into self-care and rehabilitation. These active muscular relaxation techniques are complimentary to chiropractic adjustments. This article describes three different methods used to relax hypertonic musculature. The different types of muscle hypertonicity are described. These active proc
