A light microscopic investigation of the afferent connections of the lateral reticular nucleus in the cat.

The topographical organization of the projections to the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) of the cat was investigated using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP), silver-impregnation and autoradiographic tracing methods. Following injection of HRP into the LRN, labelled cells were found mainly within Rexed's laminae VII and VIII of the spinal cord, the contralateral red nucleus, the ventro-rostral aspect of the contralateral fastigial nucleus and the contralateral anterior sigmoid and coronal gyri of the cerebral cortex. Animals with injections of tritiated amino acids placed within the pericruciate

Differential effects of the reticulospinal system on locomotion in lamprey.

Specific effects of stimulating different parts of the reticulospinal (RS) system on the spinal locomotor pattern are described in lamprey. In the in vitro brain stem and spinal cord preparation, microstimulation in different areas of the reticular formation was performed by ejecting a small amount of -glutamate from a micropipette. These areas were distributed over the four reticular nuclei of the brain stem: the mesencephalic reticular nucleus (MRN) and the anterior, middle and posterior rhombencephalic reticular nuclei (ARRN, MRRN, and PRRN, respectively). To prevent synaptic spread of exci…

[The problem of animal models for psychiatric conditions, as illustrated by the immobilization reaction (catalepsy) in the rat (author's transl)].

According to Venables the span of psychotic processes extends from a low level of arousal with an increased reactivity toward sensory stimul … lops. The current results suggest that the sensory stimulation leads to excitation of the ascending reticular formation and via the Centrum medianum and the Nucleus centralis, to activation of the striatal system, resulting in catalepsy. It would thus appear that the reticular formation and the striatum alternate in excercising a control function over the state of ar …

Changes in Fos-like immunoreactivity evoked by maturation of the sneeze reflex triggered by nasal air puff stimulation in kittens.

The sneeze reflex is a valuable tool for exploring the maturation of the respiratory control in the newborn as it alters both inspiratory an … ity (i) in the trigeminal sensory complex, at the levels where nasal afferents project, (ii) in the reticular formation, (iii) in the solitary complex and (iv) in the parabrachial area of mature kittens. The evoked immunoreactivity was the same in newborn kittens as in mature kittens in the projection areas of the nasal primary afferents. Fos response was less than h …

[Differences of behavior of DSCT neurons in decerebrate and barbiturate anesthetized cats (author's transl)].

Responses of dorsal spinocerebellar tract (DSCT) neurons to random electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves of the hindleg in decerebrate … nce are that the DSCT cells in decerebrate cats are tonically inhibited from the pontine and bulbar reticular formation and the function of brain-stem reticular formation is suppressed by the barbiturate. Type 2 response in decerebrate cats, which represents reduced excitability of the DSCT cells, had inhibition with shorter initial peak latency and duration as compa …

Electron microscopy in the non-Hodgkin's lymphomata.

The component cells of peripheral lymphoid tissue have been divided into the lymphocyte and plasma cell lines, mononuclear phagocytic cells, dendritic "reticular cells", the reticular (supporting) cells and endothelial cells, and it is suggested that this system of cells should collectively be referred to as the lymphoreticular monoclear phagocyte system or LRMPS. Seventeen tumours of the LRMPS (excluding Hodgkin's disease) have been studied at ultrastructural level. Of these 17 non-Hodgkin lymphomata 5 were follicular lymphomata and 12 diffuse. It is concluded that electron microscopy plays a

Scar formation in the vestibular sensory epithelium after aminoglycoside toxicity.

Hair cell degeneration and the repair process due to differing types of trauma have been studied extensively in the organ of Corti. It has been determined that, during scar formation, after differing types of trauma to the auditory sensory system, the reticular lamina is maintained with adherens junctions and tight junctions. We investigated the repair process within the vestibular epithelium. Hair cell degeneration was induced by the unilateral application of streptomycin to the inner ears of guinea pigs. Whole mount preparations of all five vestibular organs were processed and examined by fl

Cicatricial Organizing Pneumonia with Dendriform Pulmonary Ossification: An Unusual Cause for a Recurrent Pneumothorax.

Cicatricial organizing pneumonia is an uncommon form of organizing pneumonia, which may manifest as persisting linear opacities on computerized tomography (CT) scan mimicking a fibrosing interstitial pneumonia. It may also manifest with pulmonary ossification, which is a metaplastic bone formation within the lung tissue. The latter presentation could be either nodular or dendriform, both secondary to underlying lung disease and rarely idiopathic. Dendriform pulmonary ossification (DPO) has rarely been described as a cause of spontaneous pneumothorax. We present a case of a 55-year-old male wit

Clinical correlates of neurological change in posttraumatic stress disorder: an overview of critical systems.

Knowledge about the biological basis of psychological trauma is changing at an exponential rate. A PsychlNFO search on the search terms "locus coeruleus" and "PTSD" revealed one peer-reviewed journal article between 1982 and 1992 and 51 in the subsequent decade. A similar search revealed zero articles on "hippocampus" and "PTSD" between 1982 and 1992 and 170 in the past decade. As clinicians, it is important to become increasingly familiar with this growing literature to use that knowledge to treat and educate patients. Imagine the relief that can be provided to survivors of trauma if clinicia

New findings on the neuropathology of multiple system atrophy.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) provides a typical example of the integrative role of the central autonomic network in controlling cardiovascular, respiratory, bladder and gastrointestinal functions. There is increasing evidence that neurochemically defined neuronal groups of the brainstem are selectively affected in MSA to a much greater degree than in Parkinson's disease. These include the catecholaminergic neurons of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (C1 group) which project to the intermediolateral cell column and are involved in modulation of sympathetic vasomotor outflow, and noradrenergic

Histochemical mapping of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase in the medulla oblongata and pons of squirrel (Funambulus palmarum).

The distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) has been investigated in a series of sections passing through the medulla oblongata and pons of the squirrel brain. A comparison of the two enzymes has given an interesting picture of their selective localization in the different nuclei. Marked AChE activity has been observed in the cranial nerve nuclei. BChE activity in various nuclei of the medulla oblongata and pons is variable and occurs diffusely between the cells. Possible reasons pertaining to marked variation in AChE and BChE contents of various nuclei and
