INTRODUCTION: Retinal artery occlusions are a straightforward, essentially clinical diagnosis. The role of spectral domain ocular coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in this condition is not well described.
PURPOSE: Anoxic retinal edema develops in the acute phase of retinal artery occlusion (RAO) followed by a regressive phase giving way to retinal atrophy. The purpose of the study was to determine dynamics of theses retinal changes in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).

Four patients received hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT): Three patients had nonarteritic central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO); a fourth patient had a CRAO in the right eye (OD) and a branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) with macular involvement in the left eye (OS) secondary to giant cell arteritis. The first two patients presented with a one-day history of CRAO, the third patient with a 10-day history of CRAO OD and the fourth patient with a three-week history of CRAO OD and a three-day history of BRAO OS. The initial visual acuities ranged from light perception to counting fingers at 6 …

BACKGROUND: Acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) occurs as a sudden interruption of the blood supply to the retina and results in an almost complete loss of vision in the affected eye. There is no generally agreed treatment regimen although a number of therapeutic interventions have been proposed.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to examine the effects of treatments used for acute non-arteritic CRAO.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Group Trials Register) (The Cochrane L…

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and carotid artery lesions.
METHODS: For patients with RVO who presented to the Ophthalmology Department of Tokyo Medical University Hospital between 2000 and 2003, carotid artery evaluation was possible on 58 eyes of 57 patients aged 51 years to 88 years (mean, 70.1 years). Thirty-nine patients (40 eyes) had central RVO (CRVO), and 18 patients (18 eyes) had branch RVO (BRVO). The observation period ranged from 6 months to 28 months (mean, 14 months). A diagnostic ultrasound device was used to detect carotid artery

Central retinal artery occlusion is a dramatic event, a major emergency; presentation is with an acute, painless and profound loss of vision. The patient usually comes too late to the ophthalmologist, the treatment becoming inefficient. Therefore we present a case of CRA occlusion managed by systemic thrombolysis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of central retinal artery occlusion associated with ocular Behçet's disease (BD) and briefly discuss retinal vasculitis due to BD.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old man, diagnosed as BD 22 years ago and followed up with ocular involvement for six years presented with sudden loss of vision. The clinical diagnosis was central retinal artery occlusion.
RESULTS: No other associated systemic diseases were found and the case was classified as a complication of retinal vasculitis due to BD.
CONCLUSIONS: Although the arteries are rarely affected in retinal vasculitis due to BD, i…

Combined CRAO/CRVO in our patients occurred with rapid visual loss, usually over a few hours, associated with evidence of inflammation and/or cellular infiltration of the retrobulbar portion of the optic nerve. The ophthalmoscopic appearance was characteristic, with papilledema and hemorrhages of various types in the posterior pole. The retina also showed ischemic changes, with a milky-white color and cherry-red macula. Fluorescein angiography, when possible, showed no retinal vascular flow, and normal choroidal flow. After six to eight weeks, optic atrophy was evident and the retinal vessels

Two cases of central retinal artery occlusion of prolonged duration (greater than 6 hours) were treated with retrobulbar anesthesia, anterior chamber paracentesis, and high-dose carbon dioxide and oxygen inhalation. Both cases recovered excellent vision and illustrate that visual recovery after relatively prolonged central retinal artery occlusion is possible.

PURPOSE: To report a case of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) of the left eye combined with left congenital common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO) and internal carotid artery occlusion (ICAO).
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 36-year-old man presented with sudden vision loss of only the left eye without any signs or symptoms of brain diseases. Fluorescein fundus angiography (FFA) showed left BRAO, and computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the head and neck showed entire left CCAO and ICAO. The patient's left vertebral artery was anastomosed with the left occipital artery via the mus…

PURPOSE: We present a patient with vaso-occlusive retinal vasculitis to summarize this uncommon entity and review the clinical features and management challenges applicable to patients with retinal vasculitis.
OBSERVATIONS: A 76-year-old male presented with sudden-onset severe central vision loss. On examination, vitreous hemorrhage, neovascularization of the optic nerve, peripheral segmental periphlebitis, vessel sclerosis, vascular sheathing, and retinal hemorrhages were observed, and a diagnosis of active vaso-occlusive retinal vasculitis was made. The patient then underwent a complete inf

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of intra-arterial thrombolysis (IAT) for acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).
METHODS: Records from 101 CRAO patients treated with either IAT (n = 57) or standard treatment (ST; n = 44) were retrospectively reviewed. ST consisted of ocular massage and intraocular pressure-lowering agents. We used fundoscopic and angiographic findings to categorize CRAO as incomplete (diminished visual acuity [VA] with slight retinal edema, slight cherry-red spot), subtotal (severe VA reduction, cherry-red spot, distinct retinal edema), or total (massiv…
