Rhabdomyosarcomas are neoplasms with a high degree of malignancy and arise from the embryonic mesenchyme. They represent approximately 5% of all pediatric tumors and their main locations are the head and neck (45%), trunk (40%), and extremities (15%). Twenty-five percent to 30% of the head and neck rhabdomyosarcomas appear in the orbit; however, its origin from the conjunctiva is rare, with few case reports published in the literature. We present the case of a five-year-old girl with a diagnosis of primary embryonic rhabdomyosarcoma of the conjunctiva, treated with surgery and chemotherapy. Af

Cytogenetic analyses of four consecutive hepatoblastomas revealed near-diploid stemline karyotypes with relatively simple chromosome aberrations. Cytogenetic abnormalities shared by each tumor included trisomy for all of part of chromosome 2 and trisomy for chromosome 20. In two cases, partial trisomy for chromosome 2 resulted from direct duplication of long arm material with the shortest region of overlap being 2q23-2q35. In one tumor, each metaphase also contained a variable number of double minute chromosomes found not to derive from NMYC amplification. Interestingly, trisomy for 2q and tri

We present the case of an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of orbitary location with aberrant expression of epithelial markers in a 51-year-old female. The rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare tumor of soft tissues affecting mainly the child, but also exceptionally adults over 50. When it presents as a small round cells tumor, particularly in the region of head and neck, its differential diagnosis with several other poorly differentiated tumors may be difficult. Several cases of rhabdomyosarcoma with aberrant expression of epithelial markers have been reported in the literature. A large immunohistochemical pa

This multi-institutional report describes 8 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma in horses. Four neoplasms were in the tongue and other areas of the mouth or head, 2 were in the abdominal wall, and 1 each was in right shoulder muscles and heart. Four rhabdomyosarcomas that were less than 10 cm in diameter were treated by surgical excision or radiation with no recurrence. Two neoplasms greater than 10 cm in diameter in the abdominal wall and the right shoulder were considered inoperable and led to decisions to euthanize the horses. Two neoplasms were incidental findings at necropsy. All the neoplasms were

OBJECTIVE: Subdural rhabdomyosarcoma is very rare, and even more unusual is the association between these sarcomas and chronic subdural hematoma. In this report, we present a case of subdural rhabdomyosarcoma that developed in a chronic refractory subdural hematoma.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 40-day-old boy was admitted with coma and intractable seizure after a head trauma caused by a fall. A subdural hematoma was detected, which later became chronic and refractory to treatment.
INTERVENTION: The patient repeatedly underwent different surgical interventions over 2 years. Finally, extensive bil

Phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica (PPK) represents a specific "twin nevus" syndrome in which a speckled lentiginous nevus (SLN) is associated with an organoid nevus with sebaceous differentiation. A boy with a large nevus sebaceus on the left face and upper part of the trunk, a giant segmental SLN extending from the abdomen to the feet bilaterally, and right hemihypertrophy developed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the right abdominal wall at age 6 months. A variety of musculoskeletal, neurologic, and ocular anomalies have been observed in patients with PPK, reflecting the individual manifestat

We report a 7-year-old boy born with epidermal nevi (EN) arranged according to Blaschko's lines involving the face and head, right upper limb, chest, and left lower limb, who developed a left paratesticular embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma at 18 months of age. Parallel sequencing identified a gain-of-function variant (c.37G>C, p.Gly13Arg) of HRAS in both epidermal nevus and tumor but not in leukocytes or buccal mucosal epithelial cells, indicating its postzygotic origin. The variant accounted for 33% and 92% of the total reads in the nevus and tumor DNA specimens, respectively, supporting additional

The pleomorphic subtype of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is now rarely diagnosed in both children and adults. Most cases previously called pleomorphic RMS are probably diagnosed as something else, most often embryonal RMS in children and malignant fibrous histiocytoma in adults. To analyze the concept of pleomorphic RMS in children, we reviewed the tumors of patients entered on the Inter-group Rhabdomyosarcoma Study (IRS I, II, and III). The presence of cells with lobated, hyperchromatic nuclei at least three times larger than the common tumor cell population (anaplastic cells) was selected as the ma

PURPOSE: Although gliomas predominate among central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms in adulthood, embryonal tumors are the most common malignant brain tumors in children. Despite novel treatment approaches, including improved radiotherapy and high-dose chemotherapy, survival rates remain unsatisfactory. The timely diagnosis of residual or recurrent embryonal CNS tumors and thus the earliest possible time point for intervention is often hampered by inaccuracies of conventional imaging techniques. Novel and refined imaging methodologies are urgently needed.

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children. It predominantly arises in parameningeal and periorbital regions, as well as in other areas that do not typically contain striated muscle. Ovarian involvement is rare and may be attributed to the presence of ovarian stromal fibroblasts, or endometriotic stroma. Ovaries may be considered a favorable site for rhabdomyosarcoma. The disease typically presents in children under three years of age, often at an advanced stage and with nonspecific symptoms. Management requires a multimodal treatment approach.

A 5-month-old boy with acquired epiphora developed a right inferonasal lower eyelid mass, which was shown on computed tomography to involve the inferior and medial recti muscles and the nasolacrimal duct. Orbital exploration and excision of the mass disclosed this to be an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. This case illustrates the importance of distinguishing acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction in infancy from true congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

A case of prostatic rhabdomyosarcoma in a 5-year-old boy is reported. He was brought to our clinic on Apr. 1, 1982 with complaints of pollakisuria and urethral pain. X-ray examinations revealed a huge intrapelvic tumor, and it was histopathologically diagnosed as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with a specimen of transrectal needle biopsy. Since the tumor was too huge to resect completely, he was initially treated with combination chemotherapy regimen of vincristine, actinomycin D and cyclophosphamide (VAC therapy), and resulted in failure. Then another combination chemotherapy consisting of cis-di

PAX5 is a member of the paired box transcription factors involved in development and its expression has been well characterized among hematopoietic malignancies of B-cell lineage. Its expression has also been reported in a subset of neuroendocrine carcinomas, urothelial tumors, Merkel cell carcinoma, glioblastoma, and neuroblastoma cell lines. As such, we sought to assess it as a diagnostic marker in the evaluation of pediatric small round blue cell tumors. Tumors selected for evaluation included embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (55 cases), alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) (51 cases), neuroblastoma

A 17-year-old Japanese boy was admitted with the complaint of painless, progressive enlargement of the left scrotal contents during the preceding two months. The tumor was firm and nontender without transillumination. Orchitectomy with high ligatation of the spermatic cord was performed. The tumor, weighing 13.1 g, was gray, solid, located at the distal part of the spermatic cord, and separated from the testis and epididymis. The pathological diagnosis showed left spermatic cord rhabdomyosarcoma of the combined embryonal and alveolar type. All of the retroperitoneal lymph nodes dissected were

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common primary malignant orbital tumor in children and is very rare in adults. Bone marrow (BM) infiltration is an unusual site of metastasis and is associated with a poor prognosis; therefore, management must be initiated as promptly as possible. We report the case of a 32-year-old adult with no significant medical history, presenting with embryonal orbital RMS accompanied by BM infiltration. Clinical examination revealed decreased visual acuity with ptosis, palpebral edema, and exophthalmos, all evolving in the context of general health deterioration. Treat

Orbital cavitary rhabdomyosarcoma has been previously reported in 2 cases. The case presented here was a 15-year-old boy who had proptosis, pain, periorbital hyperemia, and visual loss in his OD, which progressed in 6 weeks. Radiologic studies demonstrated a well-demarcated, multilobulated, large mass with cavities, extending from the anterior orbit to the apex, suggesting a diagnosis of venolymphatic malformation with an intrinsic hemorrhage. On surgery, a multilobular, hemorrhagic cystic mass was almost completely excised. Histologic examination revealed a diagnosis of embryonal rhabdomyosar

BACKGROUND In the pediatric age group, middle ear tumors are rare. Rhabdomyosarcoma is considered the most common soft-tissue sarcoma in children. It comprises 5% of all pediatric malignant tumors. It is hypothesized to originate from embryonic mesenchymal cells of striated skeletal muscles. These malignant lesions display an aggressive behavior with local and distant metastasis and can be staged as per the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study Group, depending on the organs involved, such as the orbit, head, neck, or genitourinary tract. CASE REPORT In this study, a 2-year-old boy with no medical

Mosaicism for two forms of ring 13 was found in a child with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder, minor anomalies, and developmental delay. Her chromosome constitution was 46,XX,r(13)(p11q34)/46,XX,r del(13)(p11q14). Both cell lines were present in lymphocytes and fibroblasts. The cell line with the smaller ring chromosome predominated in both tissues. The child's manifestations reflect the presence of both cell lines.
