Choosing an optimal procedure to stabilize the chest wall for multiple rib fractures can be challenging for surgeons. Stabilization with rib plates or intramedullary devices requires exposure of fractured bones, whereas chest stabilization with intercostal Z-suture and mesh does not, yet it offers the chest wall a sufficient level of stability. Here, we report a case of a flail chest due to multiple rib fractures for which a simple chest wall fixation using intercostal Z-suture and mesh was efficient. This method could be a treatment option for multiple rib fractures.

PURPOSE: Surgical Stabilization (SSRF) is gaining popularity as an alternative to non-operative management (NOM) of patients with rib fractures, however, there are no established guidelines for patients' quantifiable evaluation and for SSRF recommendation. This report describes a case of snapping scapula syndrome (SSS) caused by malunited rib fractures. Abrasion of the deformed ribs was performed with good results. SSS as a cause of shoulder pain after thoracic trauma has to be considered and can be treated by a surgical abrasion technique.

Thoracic pain in pregnancy has a broad differential diagnosis. The authors report a young pregnant woman with acute pain in the thoracic region due to a rib fracture after a coughing flare. Physicians must be aware of the broad differential diagnosis (and its clinical consequences) of thoracic pain in pregnancy. Radiographic imaging is not necessary if the clinical signs are obvious. If there is no suspicion for underlying pathology other (expensive) diagnostic tests lose their value. Treatment consists of adequate analgesia and no firther measures need to be taken.

INTRODUCTION: Management of traumatic rib fractures is subject of controversial discussions. Rib fractures are common, especially after traffic accidents and falls. There is no consensus on whether and how many rib fractures need reconstruction. Not every rib fracture needs to be stabilized, but conservative treatment by internal splinting and analgesia is not effective for all patients.
