Evaluation of sport-related concussion factors at baseline in a cohort of collegiate rugby union players.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a growing concern in Rugby Union (RU) and SRC's relationship to intrinsic and extrinsic factors is unknown. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used to describe the relationship between these factors in collegiate RU players. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors included: age, weight, height, position of play (POP), previous SRCs, previous neck injuries; cervical flexor and extensor endurance; cervical anterolateral flexion strength (CAFS); and joint position error (JPE). Descriptive statistics and frequency distributions were calculated. Inferential statistic

Minimal influence of the menstrual cycle or hormonal contraceptives on performance in female rugby league athletes.

We examined performance across one menstrual cycle (MC) and 3 weeks of hormonal contraceptives (HC) use to identify whether known fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone/progestin are associated with functional performance changes. National Rugby League Indigenous Women's Academy athletes [n = 11 naturally menstruating (NM), n = 13 using HC] completed performance tests [countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), isometric mid-thigh pull, 20 m sprint, power pass and Stroop test] during three phases of a MC or three weeks of HC usage, confirmed through ovulation tests alongside serum estroge

Effectiveness of the Activate injury prevention exercise programme to prevent injury in schoolboy rugby union.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacious Activate injury prevention exercise programme has been shown to prevent injuries in English schoolboy rugby union. There is now a need to assess the implementation and effectiveness of Activate in the applie setting. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study used a 24-hour time-loss injury definition to calculate incidence (/1000 hours) and burden (days lost/1000 hours) for individuals whose teams adopted Activate (used Activate during season) versus non-adopters. The dose-response relationship of varying levels of Activate adherence (median Activate sessions per week)

Epidemiology of the Injuries Sustained by Elite Spanish under-18 and under-20 Rugby Players.

This study examines the injuries suffered by players (n=166) of the Spanish national men's under-18 and under-20 rugby teams between 2015 and 2017, and identifies the actions involved in their occurrence. All injuries (total n=78) sustained during matches and training were recorded as recommended by World Rugby, and injury incidence rates per 1000 player-hours (ph) calculated for both types of activity. Injuries occurred more commonly during matches than during training (incidence 105.3 [95% CI: 78.7-131.9] per 1000 [ph] of match play, vs 1.16 [95% CI: 0.69-1.62] per 1000 ph of training), and

Compulsory collisions and corporate interests in school rugby: challenging distortions in the framing of childhood injury.

This article examines how 'framing' is used to resist a proposal to remove rugby tackling from UK schools. It focuses on rugby tackling for UK school children, which is often a compulsory part of many schools' curricula. Specifically, we explore the importance of framing in how the problem is described in various academic publications, how ideas about risk are articulated and how advocates themselves are represented. We show how the corporate interests of rugby governing bodies can become entangled with distortions about injury prevention. These distortions (or framing practices) include omitt

Optimising classification of proximal arm strength impairment in wheelchair rugby: A proof of concept study.

This study examined the relationship between proximal arm strength and mobility performance in wheelchair rugby (WR) athletes and examined whether a valid structure for classifying proximal arm strength impairment could be determined. Fifty-seven trained WR athletes with strength impaired arms and no trunk function performed six upper body isometric strength tests and three 10 m sprints in their rugby wheelchair. All strength measures correlated with 2 m and 10 m sprint times (r ≥ -0.43; p ≤ 0.0005) and were entered into k-means cluster analyses with 4-clusters (to mirror the current Internati

Mechanisms of ACL injury in professional rugby union: a systematic video analysis of 36 cases.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms of ACL injury in rugby are not well defined. AIM: To describe the mechanisms of ACL injury in male professional rugby players using systematic video analysis. METHODS: 36 cases from games played in top professional leagues and international matches were analysed. 5 analysts independently assessed all videos to record the estimated frame/time of initial ground contact, frame/time of ACL tear and a range of play specific variables. This included contact versus non-contact ACL injuries, injury timing, joint flexion angles and foot contact with the ground. 37 side-step

Epidemiology and location of rugby injuries treated in US emergency departments from 2004 to 2013.

Rugby participation in the US is increasing, and with its inclusion in the 2016 Summer Olympics, the increased participation rates are expected to continue. Naturally, as participation increases, so too do rugby-related injuries. The difference in injury patterns with regard to age and gender illustrates differences in how the game is being played. Understanding what accounts for these emerging injury patterns will help guide future injury prevention efforts. This study provides an update on injury rates for the growing population of rugby players in the US, especially young players. Our resul

Eccentric Knee Flexor Strength and Risk of Hamstring Injuries in Rugby Union: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) represent the most common cause of lost playing time in rugby union. Eccentric knee flexor weakness and between-limb imbalance in eccentric knee flexor strength are associated with a heightened risk of HSIs in other sports; however, these variables have not been explored in rugby union. PURPOSE: To determine if lower levels of eccentric knee flexor strength or greater between-limb imbalance in this parameter during the Nordic hamstring exercise are risk factors for HSIs in rugby union. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: Th

The case for early treatment of dislocations of the cervical spine with cord involvement sustained playing rugby.

The most common injury in rugby resulting in spinal cord injury (SCI) is cervical facet dislocation. We report on the outcome of a series of 57 patients with acute SCI and facet dislocation sustained when playing rugby and treated by reduction between 1988 and 2000 in Conradie Hospital, Cape Town. A total of 32 patients were completely paralysed at the time of reduction. Of these 32, eight were reduced within four hours of injury and five of them made a full recovery. Of the remaining 24 who were reduced after four hours of injury, none made a full recovery and only one made a partial recovery

Case presentation: a novel way of treating acute cauliflower ear in a professional rugby player.

Acute auricular haematoma is a common problem in rugby players and can be difficult to treat due to re-accumulation of the fluid and can subsequently cause the unsightly cauliflower ear. We present a case of auricular haematoma affecting the central part of the pinna in a professional rugby player. This was treated successfully by aspiration and the use of silicone splints which allowed the player to continue training and competing.

Are girls contact-ready? Video analysis of tackle training practices in adolescent girls rugby union.

As most rugby injuries occur during tackles, understanding how contact skills are delivered in practice is critical for informing best practice and policy. World Rugby's contact load guidance and the Tackle Ready and Contact Confident tackle training (TT) programmes are recommended for progressive contact preparation. Within a coach TT education workshop initiative, this study aimed to characterise TT practices and adoption of World Rugby-recommended components in girls rugby. In this cross-sectional study, 251 practice sessions from 33 teams were analysed using a 10-item framework. Activities

Recovery Strategies in Elite-Level Male Rugby Union Players and Positional Considerations: A Scoping Review.

Rugby union training and competition results in task-specific fatigue. As a result, practitioners working in elite rugby settings must identify and understand the position-specific demands placed upon players. Aligning appropriate recovery strategies is essential to optimise performance. Therefore, the primary aim of this scoping review is to explore current fatigue and recovery strategies in elite rugby players and investigate any specific strategies used to enhance recovery. The secondary aim of this scoping review is to discuss potential positional differences in relation to recovery strate

Acute biomechanical responses to stroboscopic vision during change-of-direction tasks in elite rugby athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Stroboscopic vision (SV), characterized by intermittent visual occlusion, has been proposed as a novel perceptual stimulus to challenge sensorimotor integration in sport. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of SV on lower-limb biomechanics during rugby-specific side-cutting manoeuvers. METHODS: Twenty-one elite male rugby athletes performed side-cutting tasks under full vision (FV) and SV conditions, both with and without ball-carrying, using a randomized crossover design. Three-dimensional kinematics and ground reaction forces (GRF) were recorded via an eight-came
