Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease characterised by vascular abnormalities, immune system activation and fibrosis. Lymphatic involvement in SSc was described more recently and starts in early stages. This report describes a 46-year-old patient who developed over the last 2 years asymmetric lymphedema in lower extremities. Compromise in lymphatic drainage was confirmed by lymphoscintigraphy. She also presented Raynaud's phenomenon, a scleroderma pattern in nailfold capillaroscopy, cutaneous thickening and anticentromere antibodies, which together resulted in a n

We report a case of a 63-year-old woman who developed acute right heart failure and an achalasia-like syndrome with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) and primary biliary cirrhosis. Intravenous administration of diuretics improved her acute heart failure. Anti-centromere antibodies and anti-mitochondria antibodies were present. A coronary angiogram and a Swan-Ganz catheter revealed no abnormalities. Thallium-201 scan at rest demonstrated mild perfusion defects in both the apex and the anteroseptal and the inferior myocardium. A cine-esophagram revealed an achalasia-like syndrome. Tho

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease in which environmental exposure to substances and agents may trigger disease onset or exacerbation. The most fatal complication of SSc is scleroderma renal crisis (SRC), the incidence of which is 2-3%. SRC usually occurs in the first 5 years from disease onset in diffuse-SSc patients with anti-topoisomerase 1 (ATA) or RNA polymerase 3 antibodies [1]. Other risk factors for SRC are pericardial effusion, tendon friction rub and steroid use. We report herein a case of scleroderma renal crisis (SRC), following covid-19 infection, in a limited-SSc p

Ten patients with scleroderma and severe hand problems required surgery, and seven were available for follow-up (two died from scleroderma-related complications and one was lost to follow-up). The mean duration of follow-up was 4 (range 1.5-9) years. Thirty-three procedures were carried out, including five metacarpophalangeal joint excisional arthroplasties, 13 proximal interphalangeal joint fusions, ten distal interphalangeal joint fusions, and one thumb interphalangeal joint fusion. The metacarpophalangeal joint excision arthroplasties and proximal interphalangeal joint fusions were performe

BACKGROUND: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease in which numerous therapies have been used, with only limited success. Because low-dose UVA1 phototherapy has been shown to be an effective treatment option for localized scleroderma, which shares several similar clinical and histologic features with LS, we initiated a clinical trial with this phototherapeutic modality in patients with LS.
METHODS: Ten patients suffering from extragenital LS were treated with low-dose UVA1 phototherapy 4 times weekly with single UVA1 doses of 20 J/cm(2). Forty treatment sessions were per

Diffuse systemic sclerosis and the related syndromes were diagnosed in 115 patients during 1977-1987. Sixty-nine patients were available for clinical evaluation and analysis. These included 46 patients with diffuse systemic sclerosis, 2 with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis, 2 with linear scleroderma, 18 with overlap syndrome (OS), and one with primary Raynaud's disease. The major clinical manifestations among the diffuse scleroderma patients were the involvement of the following systems; cutaneous (93.3%), musculoskeletal (69.6%), gastrointestinal (54.3%), and pulmonary (43.3%) while rena

Studies of T lymphocyte subsets were carried out in a group of 50 scleroderma patients, of whom 46 were also HLA phenotyped. The total lymphocyte count was depressed in 22 patients, and CD4 (helper cells) numbers were normal. CD8 (suppressor-cytotoxic) cells were reduced in 27 patients, and the CD4/CD8 number ratio increased above normal in three additional patients, resulting in 30 patients being classified as CD8-deficient. In the 46 patients HLA phenotyped, DRw8 was significantly increased in the entire patient group, but when the patients were subdivided into CD8-deficient (n = 29) and CD8

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis presents with a variety of cardiac manifestations, while myocarditis is usually a rare finding. Furthermore, there are no reports on the use of mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) for the treatment of severe ventricular functional mitral regurgitation (vFMR) secondary to scleroderma myocarditis.
CASE SUMMARY: A-79-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of fever and fatigue. His physical examination revealed thickening of the fingertips' skin, Raynaud phenomenon, and mild pedal oedema. Positive anti-centromere antibodies indicated a diag

There is limited information on kidney transplant recipients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) due to scleroderma. We conducted an observational study on kidney transplant recipients with ESRD due to scleroderma who received kidney transplant at our center between 01/1994 and 06/2013. During the study period, there were 10 kidney transplant recipients, all of whom were Caucasian females. Seven of them were living-donor kidney transplant recipients, and the mean age at time of transplant was 56.6 ± 11.99 years. The mean post-transplant follow-up was 76.75 ± 56.18 months; the mean dialysis vin

BACKGROUND: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease. In the types of SSc, lcSSc presents with milder symptoms and poses challenges for early diagnosis. Therefore, the identification of biomarkers for earlier diagnosis and the discovery of potential therapeutic targets are of greater significance. This study aims to explore the relationship between competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks, cuproptosis, and lcSSc.
METHODS: RNA sequencing was performed to profile differentially expressed RNAs in blood samples from lcSSc patients and healthy controls. The potential ceRNA network target

The pathophysiology of both limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) and diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc), representing two subtypes of an autoimmune disease of the connective tissue, is still enigmatic. Life-limiting, progressive fibrotic changes as a consequence of vasculopathy and autoimmunity are characteristic in varying extent for lcSSc and dcSSc. Previously, an increased IL-33 serum concentration in early phase SSc patients and an elevated tissue expression of its receptor, ST2L, on endothelial cells (EC) were described. While suggested as a biomarker for fibrotic diseases, for example

In this study, we determined the adiponectin expression in the serum and lesional skin of patients with scleroderma (SSc). Serum adiponectin concentrations were measured in 32 patients with SSc, 10 patients with SLE, 12 patients with dermatomyositis patients and 13 healthy subjects with specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Adiponectin mRNA was determined in skin tissues of five patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc), seven patients with limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) and seven healthy subjects with real-time polymerase chain reaction. There was a significant reduction in serum adip

CREST syndrome is a slowly progressive form of systemic scleroderma. It is characterized by calcinosis cutis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal involvement, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. There are limited reports of dental treatment for patients with this syndrome, and no reports of periodontal surgical procedures. This paper presents a case report of periodontal surgical treatment in a 38-year-old female patient with CREST syndrome, and a discussion of the clinical manifestations of the syndrome as they relate to dental treatment.

Patients with autoimmune disorders are predisposed to develop a second immunologic disease, frequently with systemic involvement. We present a patient who developed lesions of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) limited to the face, and, concurrently, a linear morphoea involving her right axilla. No criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus or systemic scleroderma were present in the patient. To our knowledge, no patients with concomitant DLE and linear morphoea, without systemic involvement, have been previously reported in the literature.

Stiff skin syndrome is a rare scleroderma-like disorder of unknown etiology characterized by stone-hard indurations of skin, mild hypertrichosis and limited joint mobility. No effective treatment has yet been found. Exercises and rehabilitative therapy are important in maintaining the patient's quality of life. The authors present a case of a two-year-old boy with progressive skin hardening since he was eight-month old and secondary restricted joint mobility, diagnosed as Stiff skin syndrome.
