Parasympathomimetic action of scorpion venom on the cardiovascular system.

Although the precise mechanism of the cardiovascular effects in man evoked by the venom of the yellow scorpion has yet to be completely elucidated, previous studies indicate that excessive adrenergic activity is present in many of the cases. This report describes two patients in whom yellow scorpion sting was followed by bradyarrhythmia with varying degrees of atrioventricular block which promptly regressed after the administration of atropine; this is consistent with a direct parasympathomimetic effect of the venom or with a central effect producing increased vagal tone. It is suggested that

Experimental studies on the aetiology of acute scorpion pancreatitis.

This study examined the action of the venom of the scorpion Tityus trintatis on the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract in anaesthetized dogs, on the isolated extracorporeal haemoperfused canine pancreas and on the isolated canine sphincter of Oddi. The venom induces exocrine secretion in both the isolated and intact pancreas and causes contraction of the isolated sphincter of Oddi. These results are discussed in relation to the pathogenesis of acute scorpion pancreatitis and possibly of some other forms of acute pancreatitis.

Pharmacology of scorpion toxin II in the skeletal muscle.

1. Scorpion toxin II is potent in inducing contracture and spontaneous contractions of the chick biventer cervicis muscle. In addition, this toxin induces membrane depolarization and blockade of neuromuscular transmission in this muscle preparation. The purpose of the present study is to explore the possible mechanism of actions of toxin II. 2. The muscle contracture induced by toxin II is moderately accelerated by Ca2+-free Krebs solution, delayed by high Ca2+ (10 mM), high Mg2+ (10 mM) and low Na+ (60mM) Krebs solution. Moreover, this action is inhibited slightly by d-tubocurarine and comple

Defibrination syndrome due to scorpion venom poisoning.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation occurred in dogs given scorpion venom subcutaneously in doses of 3 mg./kg. body weight. Treatment with heparin reversed the coagulation abnormality of the syndrome and 10 out of 12 dogs survived. Necropsy findings in human patients stung by scorpions suggest that this syndrome also occurs in man.

Heterologous expression of four recombinant toxins from Panamanian scorpions of the genus Tityus and Centruroides for production of antivenom.

BACKGROUND: The development of more effective antivenoms remains a necessity for countries where scorpionism is a public health problem. Als … to produce antibodies for neutralizing the lethal effects of the most important medical species of scorpions in Panama.

Evaluation of antivenom therapy in children severely envenomed by Androctonus australis garzonii (Aag) and Buthus occitanus tunetanus (Bot) scorpions.

One hundred and forty-seven cases of envenomed children under 15 years old presenting local and general symptoms without failure in vital functions (clinical grade II) or presenting serious general symptoms with failure in vital functions (clinical grade III) were collected during the summer seasons of 1993-1997. They were classified in six groups according to the use or not of antivenom, the route and the frequency of antivenom administration. The determination, by a sensitive ELISA, of blood venom concentration before and until 6 h after antivenom therapy, allowed the establishment of the ve

Comparative Proteomic Analysis of the Venoms from the Most Dangerous Scorpions in Morocco: Androctonus mauritanicus and Buthus occitanus.

Morocco is known to harbor two of the world's most dangerous scorpion species: the black Androctonus mauritanicus (Am) and the yellow Buthus occitanus (Bo), responsible for 83% and 14% of severe envenomation cases, respectively. Scorpion venom is a mixture of biological molecules of variable structures and activities, most of which are proteins of low molecular weights referred to as toxins. In addition to toxins, scorpion venoms also contain biogenic amines, polyamines, and enzymes. With the aim of investigating the composition of the Am and Bo venoms, we conducted an analysis of the venoms b
