[Unconditional self-acceptance and self-compassion: another clinic for anorexia nervosa?].

People suffering from anorexia have a particular emotional and cognitive profile (altered body and self-perception, emotional dysregulation, perfectionism, obsessive traits), which the disorder can compensate for through emotional distancing strategies. Self-compassion and unconditional self-acceptance have been shown to have therapeutic effects on the barriers to recovery associated with this profile.

Brain mediators of biased social learning of self-perception in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by an excessive fear of social evaluation and a persistently negative view of the self. Here we test the hypothesis that negative biases in brain responses and in social learning of self-related information contribute to the negative self-image and low self-esteem characteristic of SAD. Adult participants diagnosed with social anxiety (N = 21) and matched controls (N = 23) rated their performance and received social feedback following a stressful public speaking task. We investigated how positive versus negative social feedback altered self-evalua

Accommodative self-regulation: The sample case of imprisonment in young adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the role of self-esteem stabilization processes in response to restrictive developmental conditions in early adulthood. It did so by investigating accommodative adjustments among incarcerated young adults. It was argued that an adjustment of how an individual desires to be to how they actually perceive themselves (i.e., accommodative adjustment) can help to maintain a more stable self-esteem and buffers negative changes. METHOD: Within a longitudinal design with three measurements occasions data of N = 728 incarcerated men between the age of 14 and 24 wer

Self-referential processing and perspective taking in patients with a borderline personality disorder.

Divergent self- and other-referential processes play a particular role in the development and maintenance of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study investigated self-referential processes in patients with BPD and age-matched controls. Participants performed a trait-judgment task, taking their own and the perspective of a close other person. Memory was assessed during recall of the previous choices. Results revealed over all more negative self-appraisals in patients than controls, which seemed due to making less positive self-referential choices rather than an increased choice of neg

Self-Compassion and Reactions to a Recalled Exercise Lapse: The Moderating Role of Gender-Role Schemas.

Exercise is good for health and well-being, yet people experience lapses when trying to adhere to exercise. Self-compassion may help people cope with exercise lapses. Most research on self-compassion and exercise has been conducted with women; men may also benefit from self-compassion. No research has examined whether gender-role schema influences responses to exercise lapses. The authors examined both male and female adult exercisers (N = 220) who reported their self-compassion, recalled an exercise lapse, their reactions to the lapse, and their self-identification of masculinity and feminini

Promoting the sense of self, place, and belonging in displaced persons: the example of homelessness.

This article discusses the psychosocial impact of displacement using homelessness as an illustrative example of displacement. This article draws on the geography literature concerning the sense of space and place and on social theories of self-identity and belonging, notably Anthony Giddens' structuration theory. The impact of displacement is an important dimension of homelessness because it influences social and functional abilities that are relevant to reentry into homes and society. This article explains the relevance of these considerations in the care of displaced persons and emphasizes t

A longitudinal examination of loneliness in left-behind children: the interaction between self-esteem and academic self-efficacy matters.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness can cause severe mental and physical health problems and is of particular concern among vulnerable groups such as left-behind children. Research has suggested important person-level characteristics and attributes, such as self-esteem and self-efficacy, to be protective factors of loneliness in children. However, existing research is limited in the use of a cross-sectional design and the lack of consideration of the self-esteem × self-efficacy interaction on loneliness, as well as the potential divergent effects of domain-specific (e.g., general vs. academic) self-efficac

Knowledge assessment: Squeezing information from multiple-choice testing.

Knowledge assessment via testing can be viewed from two vantage points: that of the test administrator and that of the test taker. From the administrator's perspective, the objective is to discover what an individual knows about a domain of interest. From that of the test taker, the challenge is to reveal what one knows. In this article we describe a procedure for administering and scoring multiple-choice tests that satisfies both of these objectives and we present experimental data that demonstrate its effectiveness. The method allows test takers to provide specific information about their co

Memories defining the self in Alzheimer's disease.

There is a debate over the extent to which personal identity or the self is preserved in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Autobiographical memory deficits at early stages of AD could contribute to altering patients' self. However, the nature of the relationship between autobiographical memory deficits and the self in AD has not been much investigated experimentally. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the integrative meaning of self-defining memories (SDMs) in early stages of AD and to analyse its relationship with the self-concept. The results showed that, when compared to th

Narrative identity disturbances in psychopathology: An ecologically valid transdiagnostic framework.

This article presents an ecologically valid transdiagnostic framework regarding narrative identity disturbances in psychopathology. Problems with self and identity are distressing, disruptive to everyday functioning, and central to theoretical models of recovery. Yet these problems are sorely understudied, in part due to differences in concepts, theories, and measurement models across disorder-specific literatures. Disorder-specific theories are useful for understanding the etiology of disturbances to self and identity. However, while root causes may vary across disorders, their effects on exp

Americans misperceive the frequency and format of political debate.

Disagreement over divergent viewpoints seems like an ever-present feature of American life-but how common is debate and with whom do debates most often occur? In the present research, we theorize that the landscape of debate is distorted by social media and the salience of negativity present in high-profile spats. To understand the true landscape of debate, we conducted three studies (N = 2985) across online and lab samples. In contrast to the high-profile nature of negative debates with strangers, we found that people most commonly debate close contacts, namely family members and good friends

Antipsychotics and Identity: The Adverse Effect No One is Talking About.

People who take antipsychotics, and people who are prescribed antipsychotics without taking them, experience effects which are not frequently discussed: effects on their identity and sense of self. Qualitative research indicates the relationship between taking APs and identity is multilayered, and changeable. Taking APs can restore people to their earlier, pre-symptom sense of self. Being prescribed and taking APs can also, on the other hand, be experienced as damaging, erasing and dulling people's sense of who they are. This complexity deserves exploration in clinical practice, which we belie

[Do we all suffer from imposter syndrome?].

Imposture syndrome is widespread among physicians and medical students. It is defined as a psychological experience in which people doubt their own skills and achievements despite proven successes and thus have an unfounded fear of being found out. This can have serious consequences, such as anxiety and/or depressive disorders, and can lead to burn-out. The Clance scale is a self-assessment tool used to measure the level of imposture experienced and, when appropriate, to assess the suffering caused. The aim of this article is to help recognise this syndrome, which is one way of preventing it.

Daily aggression domains differentially relate to daily affect and self-esteem.

How do daily fluctuations in aggression relate to daily variability in affect and self-esteem? Although research has examined how trait aggression relates to affect and self-esteem, state aggression has received little attention. To this end, we had 120 US undergraduates participate in a 14-day daily diary study where they responded to state-level measures of aggression, affect, and self-esteem. Crucially, we used multifaceted state measures of both aggression (anger, hostility, verbal aggression, physical aggression) and affect (positive vs. negative, activated vs. deactivated). Multilevel mo

Predictors of Implicit and Explicit Internalized Stigma in a Sample With Different Mental Illness Diagnoses.

This research aimed to study implicit and explicit internalized stigma and its relationship with other variables in a sample of people with distinct mental illness diagnoses ( N = 160). Descriptive analysis, mean differences, correlations, and stepwise regression models were conducted. Implicit and explicit internalized stigma was found throughout the sample with differences depending on certain sociodemographic variables. Regression models revealed symptomatology, physical environment, personality traits, references to mental illness, and the time taken to seek professional help as predictors

Intervening on impostor phenomenon: prospective evaluation of a workshop for health science students using a mixed-method design.

BACKGROUND: Unaddressed impostor feelings that impede developing interest in science and self-efficacy in conducting research have a dispiriting effect that perpetuates unsatisfactory diversity in the health science workforce when such feelings are experienced more by those historically underrepresented in the workforce. This warrants effective interventions to reduce the impact of impostor feelings and related factors that diminish career resilience. We examined the effects of a 90-minute workshop on impostor perceptions and growth mindset to raise awareness of impostor phenomenon (IP) and de

Borderline Personality Traits and Romantic Relationship Dissolution.

Many studies have found that borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with romantic relationship instability, with relationship dissolution being a recurring theme. Scant research, however, has examined the dissolution strategies and post-breakup outcomes for individuals with elevated levels of borderline traits. Findings from two studies revealed that there was an association between BPD criteria and tendency to employ less adaptive dissolution strategies when terminating a relationship. Furthermore, elevated levels of BPD traits were associated with less self-concept clarity and m

The monologue of the double: Allocentric reduplication of the own voice alters bodily self-perception.

During autoscopic phenomena, people perceive a double of themselves in extrapersonal space. Such clinical allocentric self-experiences sometimes co-occur with auditory hallucinations, yet experimental setups to induce similar illusions in healthy participants have generally neglected acoustic cues. We investigated whether feeling the presence of an auditory double could be provoked experimentally by recording healthy participants' own versus another person's voice and movements using binaural headphones from an egocentric (the participants' own) and an allocentric (a dummy head located elsewhe
